Instructions

K: Knit
P: Purl
K1tbl: This is a M1 stitch. After knitting a stitch, dont drop it from your
needle, but knit into the back loop of the stitch to make one. Then drop the
stitch as usual. Now you should have two stitches in the place of one.
K2tog: Knit two stitches together like they are one stitch.
-----------------------This pattern comes in one size: a small size, for a 5-7 inch wrist. If you
have a 7-9 inch wrist please go up a needle size and use 5.0mm double
points. Gauge is 4.5 to 5 stitches an inch for small size and 5.5 to 6 stitches an inch for large size.
All steps are explained after the pattern. Thumb is given as a chart and as
a written pattern depending on your preference. One skein of Malabrigo
Rios (100grams, 210 yards) will make 2 pair in small size, or four gloves
of your choice for small size. If making large size, makes 1.5 pairs, or 3
gloves of your choice.
-----------------------

You will need:

105ish yards/50g of worsted weight yarn to makes 2 gloves, or 1 pair)

Size 4.5mm double pointed knitting needles or magic loop needle
A size 5.5mm knitting needle for binding off
One small piece of worsted weight scrap yarn for the thumb, and four
small pieces of scrap yarn if you are making the half-finger version.
Yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Pattern

Left & Right Hand

1) Cast on 32 stitches on three double pointed knitting needles using a stretchy cast on (like crochet or long tail). I put 12 on one needle, 12 on the next, and 8 on the last. Join in the round. See
pages 10 and 11 for a picture walkthrough of this step.
2) [K2, P2] until work measures two inches
3) Knit four rounds.
4) Now we will began thumb gusset. Follow this pattern, or the chart on page 5 if you prefer a
chart. See page 14 for a picture walkthrough of first thumb gusset round if confused.
Round 1: Knit 29 stitches, K1 (dont drop stitch yet), place marker, then knit 1 through the back
loop [K1TBL] to make one, drop stitch off left needle, place marker and knit to end of round.
You should have one stitch between your markers. (Right hand: K29 stitches. Place marker, K1 (dont
drop this stitch) place marker, K1TBL, then drop stitch off left needle, and knit to end of round)

Round 22: Knit all.

Pattern

L & R Hand (cont.)

Now, we will make the top of the glove in the fashion you wish. There are four choices.

For fingerless, stay on this page.

For half fingers, go to page 6
For mittens, go to page 8
For full fingered gloves, go to page 9

Fingerless

1) Knit four rounds. [it is recommended to try on your fingerless glove at this point and see
where it lies on your hand. In the next step we will only be adding 1.5 inches. Measure 1.5
inches from where your knitting is now. If you want the glove to be longer then that, please add
knit rounds here]
2) [K2, P2] for 1.5 inches and then bind off with larger [5.5 mm] knitting needle.
3) Now we will finish the thumb. Put half the scrap yarn stitches on a 4.5mm double pointed
(dp) knitting needle, and the other half on another 4.5mm dp knitting needle. With a third
4.5mm dp knitting needle, pick up three (four for large) stitches on the back of the glove.
Then knit 3-6 rounds and then bind off. To see how many rounds you need, keep trying on
glove after every 2 rounds until thumb its as long as you want. See page 16 for a thumb walkthrough if you need extra help.
I did not need to block my fingerless mitts, but if your yarn needs blocking, do so.
Make left hand glove and then wear, gift, or sell.

1) To start thumb knit 29 stitches, K1, place marker, then knit 1 through the back loop to make
one [K1TBL], drop stitch off left needle, place second marker, then knit to end of round. This
is round one of the thumb chart. (Right hand: K29 stitches. Place marker, K1 (dont drop this stitch) place
marker, K1TBL, then drop stitch off left needle, and knit to end of round)

2) Knit all stitches on all rounds that are not between markers. Perform round 2 and up of chart
on all stitches between markers after round one.
*On round 21 of thumb stitches (having completed all rows) put all stitches between your markers on a piece of worsted weight scrap yarn and keep knitting around, closing the gap where
youve added stitches (see pictures on page 15 if confused)

*Go to page 4 for the next instructions after completing full thumb chart*

Now we will knit the middle finger. Place five stitches on your first needle. Place the second
(back) five stitches on your second needle. Knit 5 stitches, then backwards cast on a stitch. Knit
5 more stitches, then backwards cast on another stitch. Now divide your stitches evenly between
three needles, four on each. Knit four rounds, or until digit is as long as desired. Bind off, and
cut yarn.
Now we will knit the forth finger. Place five stitches on your first needle. Place the second
(back) five stitches on your second needle. Knit 5 stitches, then backwards cast on a stitch. Knit
5 more stitches, then backwards cast on another stitch. Knit four rounds, or until digit is as long
as desired. Bind off, and cut yarn.
Now we will knit the pinky. Place three stitches on the first needle, and three on the second.
Knit three stitches, and pick up one stitch from the lower level from side of hand, and then
backwards cast on a stitch. Knit three more stitches, and then backwards cast on two stitches.
Divide stitches as evenly as possible on three double pointed needles, knit four rounds, or until
digit is as long as desired. Bind off, and cut yarn.
*See page 17 for full walkthrough for forming index and page 18 for the pinky half-finger*
Use ends to cover up any holes that may have been created from picking up/ casting on stitches.
6) Now we will finish the thumb. Put half the scrap yarn thumb stitches on a 4.5mm double
pointed (dp) knitting needle, and the other half on another 4.5mm dp knitting needle. With a
third 4.5mm dp knitting needle, pick up three (four for large on 5.0mm double points) stitches
on the back of the glove.
Then knit 3-6 rounds and then bind off. To see how many rounds you need, keep trying on
glove after every 2 rounds until thumb its as long as you want. See page 16 for a thumb walkthrough.
I did not need to block my mitts, but if your yarn needs blocking, do so.
Make left hand glove and then wear, gift, or sell.

Mitten

1) Keep knitting rounds until your knitting is approximately two rows from the end of your
pinky. (A)

2) Now we will decrease a few rows.

Row 1: K14, K2 tog, K13, K2tog, K1
Row 2: Knit all
Row 3: K13, K2tog, K12, K2tog, K1
Row 4-6: Knit all

Make sure glove totally covers all fingers with about an half inch to an inch of room at the top. Now,
cut string, run it through all stitches, pulling tight. This creates pointy end. (C) For flat end, three needle
bind off. (D) Weave in ends.
2) Now we will finish the thumb. Put half the scrap yarn thumb stitches on a 4.5mm double pointed
(dp) knitting needle, and the other half on another 4.5mm dp knitting needle. With a third 4.5mm dp
knitting needle, pick up three (four for large on 5.0mm double points) stitches on the back of the glove.
Then knit about 10 rounds or until stitches cover thumb. Cut yarn, run it through all your stitches, pull
tight. Weave in end. See page 16 for a thumb walkthrough.

Full-fingered

You make full fingered just like half fingered.

Follow the half finger instructions on page 6 but, of course, dont bind off when the pattern tells
you to. Instead, knit each finger until the stitches are flush with your finger.

Yes!

Not high enough

Then, K2tog all the way around, knitting the last extra stitch on the round if you have an odd
number of stitches on your needles. After this, knit one more round.

Then, cut the yarn, and weave it through all stitches (like the top of a hat) pull tight, and weave
in ends.

The half finger picture walkthroughs that start on page 17 have written instructions for this as
well.

Casting On

The Crochet Cast-On

1) Start off with a slip knot and a

normal stitch on your needle (A).
2) Put your second needle in between the stitches (B) The needle
should be against the other needle,
with the yarn below it.

3) (C) Yarn over with your working yarn (NOT the tail)
4) Pull this yarn over through the
two stitches. (D)

5) Yarn over on your second needle (NOT using tail) (E)

6) Now slip your first needle

under the stitch on your second
needle (F) and pull it over the
yarn over that is also on your second needle, leaving the yarn over
on the second needle (G)

7) You have now formed that third

stitch. Slip it on to your left needle
(H) and repeat from step 2 (B) to
form more stitches.

*many use a crochet hook to do

this, but I dont.

10

Joining in Round
1) Cast on ONE extra stitch (one more then the pattern calls for)
2) Make sure your working yarn is coming off the right needle.

3) Take first stitch on left needle and pass as if to purl onto the right needle
4) Now take what was the first stitch but is now the second stitch on the
right needle and pass it OVER that stitch you just slipped, and off the needle. (like a PSSO)
5) Pull your tails and working yarn to make it tight. Done!

11

K2tog

K2Tog means to knit two stitches together like they are one
stitch. (A) You simply knit through two stitches like it is one.
See how I make sure I have two stiches close together (B) and
knit into them like they are a single stitch?
This will leave only one stitch on your right needle when you are
done. (C) and it makes a little lean (D) when finished.

Placing a lot of k2tog

on top of each other
in rows or rounds
will create this leaning effect in the finished knitted product.

See how their are

two loops on the end
of this stitch? This
is a finished K2tog.

12

K1tbl
This is an increase stitch. It takes one stitch
and makes it into two stitches.
1) Start off by knitting into the live stitch on
your left, working needle: BUT dont slide
the stitch off your left needle yet like a regular knit stitch. (A)
2) Knit again though this same stitch by taking your right needle and placing it behind
the left needle (B) and knitting. Now you
have two stitches on your right needle and
the one stitch you knit into twice on your
left needle (C)
3) Drop stitch three off your left needle (D)
The back-knit stitch sort of looks like a purl
stitch, see?
Extra Explanation:
You usually knit like this:
by going front to back.
However, when knitting
through the back loop
(KTBL) you slide your
needle and knit like this:
always staying behind
the stitch.

13

Thumb Gusset
For all glove choices

To start thumb gusset knit 29 stitches. Then, K1, place

marker (A) knit 1 through the back loop of same stitch to
make one [K1TBL], (B)

Now, drop this same stitch off left needle, place maker,
(C) and continue with knit stitches to end of round.
This is round one of the thumb chart, and round one of
printed pattern thumb instructions.
At the end of round one you should have one stitch between your markers. (C)
(Right hand: K29 stitches. Place marker, K1 (dont drop this stitch)
place marker, K1TBL, then drop stitch off left needle, and knit to
end of round)

completed gusset and thumb

14

Thumb Part 2
For all glove choices

On the round after the thumb

chart or after the last round on
the written pattern, you will
place all the stitches between
your markers on a piece of
scrap yarn. (A)
Use a yarn needle threaded
with a piece of worsted scrap
yarn about 8 inches long. Slide
the yarn needle as if to purl,
and place all your stitches that
are between your markers on
the worsted yarn. (B)

I like to tie a knot in my scrap

yarn when I am finished to
make sure none of my stitches
are going to escape.

Now, you continue the pattern

in the stitch right after your
marker, just knitting around.
(C) Be sure to pull tightly in the
first stitch.

15

Thumb 3

For all glOVE Choices

B

After you have knit the entire glove, we will finish the thumb. Undo your scrap yarn, and place
half of the stitches on one double pointed 4.5mm knitting needle, and half on another double
point (A) (does not have to be exactly half)
Then, pick up three (four for large size) stitches on the back with your third double point. (B)
Knit four rounds, then try on your glove to see if thumb is as long as desired. (C) If not, keep
knitting, checking thumb every 2-3 rounds. Bind off for fingerles and half double when thumb
is long as desired (usually half length of your diget) using same 4.5mm double points.
For full fingered and mitten choices, knit thumb until rounds just pass tip of finger. Then, K2tog
all the way around, and then knit another round. Cut yarn, thread through remaining loops, pulling tight. Weave in ends.
Sometimes small holes can appear where you picked up stitches (D). Weave your ends in to fill
in these tiny holes, if you have any.

D
16

Index Finger

half & Full finger

Your yarn is already attached to this finger, at the beginning of the next round. Starting at beginning of the
next round (the stitch to the left of the tail if thumb is
pointing to the right) place those three stitches on a
needle, and the other seven stitches on another needle.
(A)

Knit the first three stitches. Backwards cast on a stitch.

(B)
Knit five stitches. Pick up a stitch from the last round.
(C) Knit three more stitches.

Now, divide your stitches up on three needles, four on

each needle. (D)
For half finger, knit three rounds, or until digit as as long as desired, and bind off, and cut yarn. Do not weave in ends until all
digits are knit.
For full finger, knit rounds until work is flush with end of finger.
K2tog all the way around, cut yarn, and trail it through like the
top of a hat, pull tightly, and weave in.

For half finger, when you end, the top

part will be a little taller then the rest.
So, pull on the thread right below it to
tighten it up.
On half finger, when weaving in the
ends of digits, weave it down a row to
make it level

17

Pinky

half & Full finger

Place three stitches on the first needle, and three on the
second. (A)

Now, knit three stitches, and pick up one stitches from

the lower level from side of hand, and then backwards
loop a stitch. (B) Knit three more stitches, and then
backwards cast on two stitches. (C)
Divide stitches as evenly as possible on three double
pointed needles, (D)
For half finger, knit three rounds, or until digit as as long as desired, and bind off, and cut yarn. Do not weave in ends until all
digits are knit.

For full finger, knit rounds until work is flush with end of finger.
K2tog all the way around, cut yarn, and trail it through like the
top of a hat, pull tightly, and weave in.
