Uncommon Journey
Public is invited to a premiere of a documentary about Phil Cornwell, whose
life and story have impacted many here and around the world. { BY JIM TALONE

our weeks ago SNJ Today President Ken Pustizzi

and his wife, Stephanie, stopped by the companys

radio transmitter tower in Bridgeton on a Saturday
afternoon to check on the equipment. While there the
Pustizzis met the Reverend Phil Cornwell, who was breaking
down his church, which has been housed there since 2002.
Because Ken took the time to do more than say hello, he got to
hear some of Phil Cornwells remarkable story. Because SNJ
Today is commited to telling positive stories, he followed up
that meeting by sending a crew to make a documentary film,
Uncommon Journey: The Phil Cornwell Story for Cumberland
Countys Channel, Comcast 22.
The resulting 44-minute documentary is so interesting
and emotionally moving that SNJ is going to host their firstever, open premiere of the show at the SNJ Today auditorium
(1101 Wheaton Ave. in Millville) at 7 pm on Monday,
December 21. The public is invited to attend the screening.

wreath-laying ceremonies on Saturday,
December 12, at the Cumberland County
Veterans Cemetery in Hopewell Twp. and at
Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland on
December 5 for the fourth consecutive year.
More than 500 wreaths were placed at the
gravesites of veterans at each of the two
Cumberland County cemeteries. In addition to
the Vineland Rotarians who volunteered to lay
the wreaths in honor of those deceased veterans
who so nobly served to defend our country,
numerous veterans organizations also took part, as
did area students who are members of the
Cumberland County College Rotaract Club,
and Interact Clubs from TriCounty
Community, Schalick and Buena.
During a ceremony that took place prior to
laying the wreaths at each cemetery, eight large
wreaths were placed at the flag area at each
location (for each branch of the military and for
POWs and for MIA). Following welcome
remarks and a prayer, the volunteers witnessed a

We do not need a special day to bring you to our minds.

The days we do not think of you are very hard to find. Each
morning when we awake we know that you are gone, and no
one knows the heartache as we try to carry on. Our hearts
still ache with sadness and secret tears still flow. What it
meant to lose you no one will ever know. Our thoughts are
always with you, your place no one can fill. In life we loved
you dearly; in death we love you still. There will always be a
heartache, and often a silent tear. But always a precious
memory of the days when you were here. If tears would
make a staircase, and heartaches make a lane. We hold you
close within our hearts; and there you will remain, to walk
with us throughout our lives until we meet again. Our family
chain is broken now and nothing seems the same. But as
God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
Loved and sadly missed,

Food was donated by Sysco, US Foodservice, as well as local vendors and businesses, including Joe Moro of Joes Butcher Shop and Danny Sommeling of
Dannys Pizza Pizzazz. There were also many volunteers on hand to assist in setup, service and cleanup.

For the History Buff

The Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society
(108 S Seventh St., 856-691-1111) has just the thing for
anyone on your list with a penchant for local history.
The postcard history of Vineland ($19.95) is one of
those gifts you can spend hours looking through and
recognizing landmarks that have changed or arent even
around anymore.
Or how about A Trip to Mars, a science fiction book penned by Vineland founder
Charles K. Landis in 1876? A handwritten copy of the manuscript was
discovered last year by the Vineland Historical & Antiquarian Societys
curator, Patricia A. Martinelli, while inventorying the Landis family files.
Mr Landis wrote a lot, but this rare book is unique among all his writings, said
Martinelli. The book is a typical example of the early days of the science fiction
genre. It sells for $9.95.

Christmas Magic at Italian

Cultural Association
The Italian Cultural Association of
South Jersey continued its nearly 30year holiday tradition of bringing
smiles to the faces of children recently.
The fun day of entertainment was held
at the organizations Wheat Road facility on Sunday, December 13, for the
benefit of about 40 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mesmerized for about 45 minutes by a
magician from Masters of Magic and
Fun, the children were then ready for a
visit from Santa Claus. This years
event was planned and coordinated by
Lexi Gravener, granddaughter of Sarina
Infranco, one of the original planners
of the event for the past 30 years. The
tradition continues.

There is nothing about his appearance

that would tell you that you are in the presence of a remarkable man, but Cornwell has
the distinction and honor of being chased by
both the Taliban and the North Vietnamese
Army. He is of average height and weight
and was wearing a Marine ball cap on our
first meeting. Cornwell is currently battling
cancer, but in his eyes you can see a serenity
that comes from his belief in the Lord. But
theres also a glint of steel left from his early
days as a Marine and a narcotics officer.
Once Cornwell starts talking, you are
hooked. The passion for his cause and the
eloquence of his words demand attention.
We sat with Cornwell for over an hour
and heard about his experiences in the
Marine Corps when, as a young 18-year-old,
fresh out of high school, he saw some of the
fiercest fighting of the war in Vietnam. After
receiving his third Purple Heart, he came
back to the States, where he was spit upon
for wearing his uniform. Coming back to
Millville he lived the life of a biker, violent
and drug fueled, until he was miraculously
saved by the Lord. In an unusual chain of
events he went from a life of crime to being
a policeman for six years and then went
back to college for a masters degree in
counseling. He held down two full-time jobs
fighting the war on drugs as a narcotics officer at night and working as a drug and alcohol counselor during the day.
He might be doing that still if he hadnt
ruined his back in 1999 after years of kicking
down doors in drug busts. Several surgeries
forced him into inactivity which really
brought on his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Cornwell got help from the VA
and he learned to live with his PTSD. From
2002 on, he devoted himself to his church,
Life in Christ Outreach Ministries. While
his local congregation never grew beyond 45
people Phil felt called upon to write a series
of 47 pamphlets explaining the Gospel. He
shared these with ministers overseas, where
they became very popular. Cornwell bought
two large Xerox machines and, at his own
expense, started printing pamphlets and
sending them to ministries around the
world. When language barriers prevented
his pamphlets from reaching their intended

audience, Phil had the local ministers translate them and, with the help of his wife and
congregation, printed over 2 million copies.
He has sent these all over the world along
with over 20,000 Bibles.

Redeemer Members Make Dresses for African Girls

Redeemer Members of the Lutheran
Church of the Redeemer have recently
completed more than 60 dresses for children in Africa. These dresses were made
for little girls who out of circumstance
have no parents and have become head of
the family, forcing them to be the primary
caregivers of their younger siblings. These
girls have no income and cannot purchase
clothes for themselves.
The group made different size dresses
using standard, queen and king-size pillowcases. These colorful dresses have
shoulder ties and were personalized with
lace and special trim. Thread, trim, ribbon
and pillow cases were provided through
Thrivent Financial and a Thrivent Action
Team lead by Jan Stiegler.
The dresses will be distributed to little
girls in African villages through Little
Dresses for Africa. This organization was
founded by Rachel ONeill in 2008 to provide relief to children throughout the
Continent of Africa and beyond.
Serving families in greater Cumberland
County, Redeemer Lutheran Church is
located at 2384 E. Landis Ave., Vineland,
between Spring & Brewster roads, one
mile east of the intersection of Main Road
and Landis Avenue. For more information

Charles Nordhoffs grandfather of the same name
and profession (as a writer) had connections to
Vineland.

own uncultivated lands at twenty-five dollars per acre. At that price he sold to the
first settler; and that price he did not
increase for many years. Anyone could,
within two or three years, buy wild land
on the Vineland tract at twenty-five dollars per acre. This means that he did not
speculate upon the improvements of the
settlers. He gave to them the advantage of
their labors. It resulted that many poor
men bought, cleared, and planted places
in Vineland on purpose to sell them, certain that they could, if they wished, buy
more land at the same price of twenty-five
dollars per acre which they originally
paid.
The author contends that this is what
led to the towns longevity. In my judgment, he writes, this feature of the
Vineland enterprise, more than any other,
changed it from a merely selfish speculation to one of a higher order, in which the
settlers, to a large extent, have a common
interest with the proprietor of the land.
He might have done all the restmight
have laid out roads, proclaimed a "no
fence" law, prevented the establishment of
dram-shops, helped on educational and
other enterprises and still, had he
raised the price of his wild lands as the
settlers increased, he would have been a
mere land speculator, and I doubt if his
scheme would have obtained more than a
very moderate and short-lived success.
Familiar with the people of Vineland
and its farming and industry, Nordhoff
was able to evaluate the effects of Landis
endeavors, concluding that in twelve
years, the founder of Vineland was able to
collect upon his tract which had not a
single inhabitant in 1861 about eleven
thousand people. Most of these have
improved their condition in life materially
by settling there. Many of them came
without sufficient capital, and no doubt
suffered from want in the early days of
their Vineland life. But if they persevered,
two or three years of effort made them
comfortable. Meantime they had, what
our American farmers have not in general,
easy access to good schools for their children, to churches and an intelligent society, and the possibility of good laws regarding the sale of liquor. I

f seasoned readers were asked

about Charles Nordhoff, they would
likely explain that he was the coauthor of the Bounty Trilogy,
including the highly regarded Mutiny on
the Bounty. But they would be partially
correct because the renowned authors
grandfather, who was also named Charles,
was a writer as well. Noted for his journalistic work that appeared a half century
before his grandsons writings, the elder
Nordhoff also had an interesting connection to Vineland and helped promote the
town in a most unique way.
Nordhoff was born in Germany in 1830,
migrating with his family to the U.S. in
1835. Raised in Cincinnati, he entered the
world of journalism by working at a
Philadelphia newspaper but soon enlisted
in the U.S. Navy. Following his life at sea,
he returned to journalism, working at
newspapers in Philadelphia and
Indianapolis and in New York as an editor
of Harpers between 1853 and 1861.
According to online sources, he spent the
next ten years at the New York Evening
Post and the New York Tribune.
In 1868, he purchased property in
Vineland. Based on information from the
Vineland Historical Magazine, Nordhoff
bought a farm in Vineland in 1868 for his
wifes aunt and uncle and would visit here
often enough to study the towns early
development. The results would later be
published in one of his most recognized
books.
Nordhoffs early works dealt with his
sea experiences. Afterwards, he turned
toward travel literature and political topics such as 1875s Politics for Young
Americans, a book that became a school
text. In the same year, he produced his
study The Communistic Societies of the
United States, which would include his
examination of Vineland.
In The Communistic Societies of the
United States, Nordhoff credits Vinelands
success to Charles K. Landis refusal to
raise the price of land in the town. One
part of his plan appears to me to have
been of extraordinary importance,
Nordhoff writes, though usually it is not
mentioned in descriptions of Vineland.
Mr. Landis established the price of his

VHS All Sports Booster Club Honors Sbrana

The Vineland High School All Sports Booster
Club recently conferred special recognition and
presented a plaque to F. John Sbrana, retiring
December 31 as the districts Executive Director
of Communications.
The presentation came at the conclusion of
the clubs Hall of Fame recognition dinner at the
Greenview Inn at Eastlyn Golf Course. The event
honors former athletes who graduated from VHS
at least 10 years ago, have contributed to the
community and exhibited reputable character.
With this year's recipients, the list of honorees
has reached 100.
Sbrana, a district employee for nearly 21 years whose media career has
spanned four decades, was recognized by the club for 20 years of service to the
Student Athletes of Vineland High School, said Debra Anderson, co-president of
the club.
Making the presentation was Dr. Thomas McCann, principal of VHS. Dr.
McCann recounted the immeasurable amount of hours and events that Mr. Sbrana
covered over his career.
"I am very thankful and honored that the All Sports Booster Club asked me to
make this presentation," said Dr. Thomas McCann, VHS Principal, in his introduction, and an interview after the ceremony. "It's about someone who has always
been on the other side of the camera when awards like this were presented to people who have received them over the years. Not only from the Booster Club but
from all the organizations associated with the Vineland school district."
Whether it was programs associated with kindergarten, elementary, middle
school level, high school, adult education and innumerable athletic events -- you
name itfor 20 years he has reporting, photographing and coordinating video coverage on these events," he said. "Volumes and volumes of articles and thousands
of images and video of these events and activities.
"This man has been in the district for generations of students, and whose own
grandchildren are fifth generation family in Vineland," he said. "His family attended
the event to see him on this side of the camera, getting the recognition he richly
deserves."
Sbrana was recently elected to the Vineland Board of Education, and will begin
a one-year term on January 7.

Vineland Fire Station Earns

National Design Recognition
The City of Vineland Fire Station No. 1
was recognized recently by Firehouse magazine as part of their 2nd Annual Station
Design Awards Showcase for fire and
emergency services facilities from across
North America. The aim of the Station
Design Awards is to identify and educate
by recognizing examples of how new public safety facilities are being designed and
constructed to meet the needs and responsibilities of the agency, the personnel, and
the community that they serve. Nominees
are submitted for consideration by architectural firms with experience in designing
public safety facilities.
Vineland Fire Station No. 1, designed
by Rodier Ebersberger Architects and
dedicated in October 2014, received a
notable mention in the
Volunteer/Combination category. The
panel of five judges named the Westlake
Volunteer Fire Station in Katy, Texas as
the top station in the category. The competition also included categories for
Career Stations, Satellite Stations,
Renovated Stations, and Shared Facilities.
Judges were asked to review the nominations by category, and, based on their
experience, select their top facilities in
each of the five categories as examples of
best practices in site location, design,
operations, needs accommodations, safety
for personnel, and any other unique
insights based on their experiences.
Firehouse is the leading news and
information source for the fire service
with a monthly national print circulation
of over 81,000, and 500,000 unique online
visitors per month.

The January closing allows the staff to

County Hosts Visitors From

South America

Attorneys for the City of Vineland have

sent a second letter to the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection
(DEP) requesting that they refer the Pure
Earth site (PER) in Vineland back to the
United States Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) for further action, in accordance with the EPAs recommendation.
The letter, dated December 9, also serves
to notify the DEP of the City of Vinelands
intention to file claims under the
Environmental Rights Act.
The Pure Earth site consists of a former hazardous waste treatment facility
and associated chemical releases to the
surrounding environment. According to
an Expanded Site Inspection Report, prepared by the EPA Region 2 Assessment
Team in 2014, the analysis gave the Pure
Earth site a score of 70.77, far above the
28.5 minimum required for placement on
the National Priorities List. Despite this
finding, the DEPs Division of Solid and
Hazardous Waste made it clear to city
officials in 2014, that no funding was currently available for the remediation of the
site, and that a lack of funding may continue for many years.
But on September 9 of this year, the city

Cumberland County was host to food

industry executives from Brazil last week
and again hosted more from other parts of
South America this week, who came to
learn more about the areas food commerce. Rutgers Food Innovation Center
(RFIC) in Bridgeton coordinated the event
in partnership with the Cumberland
County Improvement Authority.
The expeditions were comprised of
tours, presentations and meetings including social events sponsored by the CEO
Group, a non-profit organization comprised of Cumberland County business
leaders. According to RFIC officials, the
two-day visit was arranged to showcase
the Rutgers Food Innovation Center, the
worlds only Soft Landings food incubation
program, and to provide a first-hand education to the South American agribusiness
representatives about the features and
benefits of Cumberland County.
The CCIA provided each guest with a
digital information packet for their companies, which included a short video
about the county as well as materials
regarding the area and current food industry companies located here. The video was
shared in Spanish and Portuguese. I

Its never too early to prepare for summer, and the YMCA of Vineland will host
a Summer Job and Career Fair on
Tuesday, December 22, from noon to 5 p.m.
This will be held on the second floor, in
the Davis Room. Anyone interested in
these positions is encouraged to attend
summer camp counselors, preschool certified substitute teachers, preschool substitute assistants, before and after school
assistants, group fitness substitutes, lifeguards, and swim instructors.
There is no need to preregister, but it
will be helpful if participants bring with
them a rsum and the names and phone
numbers of at least four references.
During the fair, there will be on-site interviews and opportunities to learn about the
YMCA and staff.
Information about volunteer and
internship possibilities will also be available. For more details, call the YMCA at
856-691-0030, visit 1159 East Landis
Avenue, or check ccaymca.org.

received unexpected positive news when

the EPA on-scene coordinator Paul Kahn
notified the DEP that the EPA had a bioremediation plan and available funds to
remediate the site. According to the EPA,
its funding and scientific and technical
expertise would address the soil piles, as
well as the 20,000 gallons of remaining
waste oil sludge. (The EPA had previously
initiated a CERCLA removal action at the
site in July of 2012 to address the abandoned waste materials. By the end of the
removal action in May of 2014, the EPA
had removed more than 350,000 gallons of
waste oil, leachate, and wastewater from
the facility, as well as abandoned drums,
chemicals, gas cylinders, and batteries.)
The EPAs September 9 request was
followed by a letter dated October 22 from
the citys environmental counsel
Lieberman and Blecher requesting that
the DEP promptly refer this matter to the
EPA, in accordance with the EPAs recommendation.
Significant violations have caused substantial damage to the City of Vinelands
business park that remains unabated to
this very day. Accordingly, and in conclusion, this is an Environmental Rights Act
Notice of Intent to Sue pursuant to
N.J.S.A.2A:35A-11.
There is a workable plan with available funding on the table, said Vineland
Mayor Ruben Bermudez. It is unacceptable for the DEP to further delay action
which could remove this environmental
disaster from the middle of our industrial
park. It is our hope that the DEP will act
promptly and refer this matter back to the
EPA so that no more time is wasted.

Whos Your Hero?

or as far back as I can remember,

November was the month to start
the search for the perfect holiday
sweater. Linda and I would start the search
at Cherry Hill Mall at Strawbridge &
Clothiers, then on to Deptford Mall to
Macy's and then if we still didn't find anything, it would be on to the big gun,
Wanamakers in Philadelphia.
Over the years I got many different
styles and colors. Once it was a black dolman-sleeved sweater with a gold lame
design stitched in, another year it was a
ruby red fitted sweater with black soutache
braid swirled all over the sleeves and down
the arms. Still another year, it was a green
sweater with patches of silk and lace and
plaid, still one of my all-time favorites.
I always made sure that they were wearable for the whole winter season and not
specifically with a Christmas motif.
I still have these sweaters and maybe
some of them have gone out of style, or no
longer fit, but they bring back a plethora
of memories. I can still remember wearing
that gold-lame trimmed sweater out to the
clubs with my sister and our cousin Mary
Ann, an especially heartfelt memory this
year because Mary Ann just passed away
last month. And the red and black
soutache braid sweater reminds me of an
old boyfriend who thought I looked so
great that night that he took me out to
dinner! He is gone too, but those memories also remain.
Things can be replaced or duplicated
and styles can go out of fashion, but memories are always in season and they always
fit just right!
I always enjoy making my own candy
during the holiday season and here is one
of my favorite treats. Put on your holiday
sweater, make up a big batch with family
or friends and be sure to file it away in
your own memory box!

With every $100 gift

certificate purchase.
