EE 2001

The aim of this unit is to provide students to understand the principles and procedures
used to design an electrical installation for buildings. The focus of the unit is on linking
electrical engineering principles with practical applications. Students will achieve a
basic understanding of electrical installation standards and equipment selection together
with engineering and analytical methods.
Learning Outcomes:

After completing this module the student should

Be able to understand the structure of the IEE Wiring Regulations and apply it for
electrical installation designs.
Be able to distinguish the characteristics of different types of protective devices
used in Electrical Installations, their principle of operation, advantages and
disadvantages.
Be able to assess the characteristics of an electrical installation and able to select
correct type and size of cables in electrical installations.
Know how to establish the electrical and lighting requirements for buildings and
select design conditions
Be able to select the earthing system for a particular electrical installation.
Be able to design electrical layouts and wiring diagrams for electrical installations.
Know how to prepare technical documents used in electrical installations.
Know the requirements for inspection, testing and certification of electrical
installations.
Syllabus:

Introduction to Wiring Regulations (6 hrs)

Structure of the 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671: 2008), its
importance and applicability to Sri Lanka.
Types of electrical earthing systems (8 hrs)
TT, TN, IT systems and their features, commonly used grounding arrangements. Types
of earth electrodes, calculation of earth electrode resistance
Electrical safety and protective measures (8 hrs)
Protection against electric shock, protective equipment and conductors. Protection
systems adopted in wiring systems. Electrical Safety measures.

Sizing and selection of cables (8 hrs)

Types of cables, thermal characteristics of cables, current carrying capacity and voltage
drop of cables, factors effecting the current carrying capacity,
Design criteria of electrical installations (6 hrs)
Assessment of general characteristics of an electrical installation, Demand calculation
and diversity, steps in the design of an electrical installation.
Building Management systems(BMS) (6 hrs)
Hierarchy of building management system, sensors for BMS, BMS architectures
Technical documentation (5 hrs)
Preparation and use of: Tender documents, technical specifications and drawings, bill
of quantities, contract documents.
Inspection, testing and certification (8 hrs)
Earth resistivity measurements, ground resistance calculations, continuity and insulation
testing, polarity checking. Basic Testing and commissioning of electrical installations,
preparation of test reports.
Assessment:

Continuous assessment (Design of simple electrical installation and present it as a

design report) (30%)
Final written exam (70%)
