Last September 7 11, 2015 was the Industrial and Plant Tour of us, BS ECE students batch

2016 together with BS EE batch 2016.

September 7.
(9AM)
The first destination of the educational tour is the
MERALCO POWERLAB. It is a facility that can test the
electricity consumption of different common household
appliances and gadgets. Its primary purpose is to help
Filipinos better understand electricity usage and energy
management.
The Power Lab houses 3 main sections:

(1) An Equipment Testing Laboratory for

testing the energy consumption of
appliances and gadgets;

(2) A Demo area where an interactive energy display

monitor show comparisons between the
energy usage of average electrical devices
vs those that use different technologies;

(3) And an Intelligent Living Space that

showcases an ideal efficient set-up for
homeowners.
The tour at MERALCO Powerlab was indeed educational not just relating in Engineering
Field but as a simple energy consumer as well. Many energy saving tips was discussed and
presented. Same type of appliances and gadgets are experimented and calculated to select which
among of it is the most energy efficient.

(1PM)
The second place weve visited was the
ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING
INSTITUTE (EEEI) at UP Diliman Campus.
I can say EEEI is the institute you can be proud
being a part of. It has different laboratories which the
students can choose depending on their desired
specialization. They have the necessary equipment in every
Electrical and Electronics field.

Some of its laboratories that I

was amazed of were Digital Signal
Processing Laboratories (DSPL),
Wireless Communications
Engineering Laboratory (WCEL),

A faculty of the WCEL showing us how to test this kind of antenna

Robotics and Automation Laboratory

(RAL).

But, Microelectronics and Microprocessors

Laboratory (MICROLAB) was the laboratory that
really catches my attention. Students here were
designing circuits using micrometre to nanometre size
chips. They are using cdence as the software in
making the circuit and program design of the chips,
which I know nothing about.
A student from the MICROLAB orienting us.

(4PM)
After visiting EEEI, we returned to our hotel. That was the end of the first day of the
Educational Tour.

September 8
(9AM)
For the second day of the educational tour, weve visited CAAP-MANILA AIRWAYS
FACILITIES COMPLEX.
Here, weve shown how airplanes (commercial and private) communicate from their
source to destination. Also the flight path they follow in order to reach their destination. It also
posts and decodes flight plan data and aircraft position reports. Other purposes of this facility
are: Provides alerting and emergency assistance service to aircraft in distress or in a state of
emergency; Ensures accurate dissemination of air reports and other aircraft messages to all
international and domestic addressees concerned in accordance with pre-determined distribution
arrangements programmed into the computer system; Coordinate with other aeronautical
telecommunication network station to ensure maximum dependability of the international airground communications service during communication difficulties.
Taking pictures are prohibited inside the facility because of some security reasons.

(2PM)
Our next destination is the Studio and Engineering Center of GMA-7. First, we watch a
video presentation about GMA 7, their
mission, vision, and achievements. Next,
weve tour around the Engineering
Department. This department is the one
responsible for editing the videos
acquired by news gathering teams and
teleserye before it will be broadcast
to viewers. Also, it is the one which
arrange the commercials to be
presented in line with the show.

After that, weve tour around their different studios, from their biggest and smallest to
old and new studios.

One of this is the studio for their news and current

affairs. The studio is not big as viewed in the television.
The primary reason is that they use a wide angle camera.

Studio for News and Current Affairs

It has many sections; one of this is the Flash

Report section where immediate news is needed to
broadcast.

Flash Report Section

After visiting the studios, weve proceeded to the

radio station of GMA, the Barangay LS 97.1. It was just a
quick orientation because the DJ at that time is doing his
program. Its my first time to visit a FM Station so; I was
amazed especially on how the room is acoustically design.

Barangay LS 97.1

The tour at the GMA-7 was fun-filled and many devices and equipment that are just
presented in the books are shown.
(4:30PM)
After visiting the Studio and Engineering Center of GMA-7, we returned to our hotel.
That was the end of the second day of the Educational Tour.

September 9.
(7:30AM)
After preparing things, weve our

breakfast and check-out to our

Hotel. For the third day of the educational

tour, weve

visited PAGASA Weather Forecasting

Center. Just like the others, it began by
presenting videos. After that, a proper
orientation and discussion are made inside of
its facility. After the discussions, I realized
that PAGASA is not just about forecasting
weather. Its primary purpose is to maintain a
nationwide network pertaining to observation and forecasting of weather and other
climatological conditions affecting national safety, welfare and economy. It engages in studies of
geophysical and astronomical phenomena essential to the safety and welfare of the people. It also
provides protection of life, property and livelihood against natural hazards due to typhoons,
floods, drought, giant waves, and high seas.

(2PM)
After more than 4 hours of travelling, weve reached
our second destination for the third day of the educational
tour, the San Roque Dam and Power Plant in Pangasinan. It
was built beginning 1998 to harness the power of Agno River,
bringing four major benefits to several communities in the
heart of Luzon: irrigation, flood control, electrical power, and
improved water quality. They tour us around the place which has beautiful scenery. After that,
we go to the monitoring and control room of the dam. As I remember, it was
5 floors down to the surface. It was noisy in the place.
According to our tour guide, it reaches about 90 to 100 dbA
which I think is the limit before it can create damage to the
ears. Since it was noisy, all we did was to take pictures.
(4PM)

San Roque Dam

After visiting the San Roque Dam and Power Plant, we travelled to Baguio. That was the
end of the third day of the Educational Tour.
September 10.

(8:30AM)
St. Louis University Engineering Department was the first place weve visited in Baguio
City. It is one of the best Engineering school in the Philippines because many board topnotcher
came from this school. Their Engineering equipment and devices are awesome. It helps the
students to better understand the lessons and theories being discuss.
Students of SLU tour us around their Engineering Building to show some of the
equipment and devices that they use. Some of this is the following:

Student of the SLU discussing about the device they use in

microcontroller subject. They showed us how to store data in
microcontrollers register using their prototype computer.

A fourth year student of SLU demonstrating about her

project, Line Follower Car. It is a project which can be used to
represent in competition.

Student of SLU discussing about television, the percentage of

colors used in every series of pictures presented. He also discussed
about vertorscope, oscilloscope that can show on the screen the
same indicator as the vector pattern.

(2PM)
The next place weve visited is the PLDTINNOLAB. Since the place is just small, we only spent for about 45 minutes.
They only discussed about their latest innovations regarding technology and how
will it improved their services to businesses and
consumers.

(2:30PM)

After visiting PLDT-INNOLAB, we have our Baguio City Tour to visit many tourist
spots in Baguio. Some of this is the following:

(5:30PM)
After the Baguio City Tour, weve return to our hotel. That was the end of the fourth day
of Educational Tour.

September 11.

Around 3AM, weve depart at Baguio City to go at Tarlac Power Plant. Though, it is
only for EE students so we just stay at the bus and waited for them to finish.

(1PM)
For the last day of the Educational Tour, we visited AVIAT Networks. Aviat Networks is a
global provider of microwave networking solutions, providing public and private operators with
communications networks to accommodate the exploding growth of IP-centric, multi-gigabit
data services. The AVIAT repairs, troubleshoots and gives technical

support

to microwave equipment that is brought by their clients. Taking

pictures

are also not allowed inside the facility.

(3PM)
DREAM Satellite is the place weve visited
for the
Educational Tour. Dream Satellite TV is the first alldigital Direct-ToHome (DTH) television broadcasting service
via satellite in the Philippines. Broadcasting from
the Dream Broadcast Center located at the Clark
Special Economic Zone in Pampanga. Content is
received from program providers, compressed and
broadcast via Koreasat 5 exclusively to its
subscribers using the Integrated Receiver-Decoder
System. DREAM Satellite uses satellite dish antenna to receive data from Koreasat and other
satellites.

(6PM)
After going to Dream Satellite in Pampanga, we go SM MOA to have our dinner before
going home.

That was the end of the Industrial and Plant Tour of 2015.
