HPNotebookPCsRestoringtheBIOS
ThisdocumentpertainstoallHPnotebookPCsexceptcertainNotebookswithSureStart
architecture.
IftheBIOSonyournotebookbecomescorrupted,suchasfromafailedBIOSupgradeor
damagefromavirus,thecomputermightshowanythefollowingsymptoms:
ThecomputerdisplaystheerrormessageBIOSAPPLICATIONERROR501.
ThecomputerstopsatablackorblankscreenanditwillnotenteranyoftheBoot
Options,suchas:theBIOSSetupUtility,HardwareDiagnosticTools,SystemRecovery
screens,etc.
ThecomputerdoesnotbootandtheCapsLockorNumLockLEDblinkstwiceorthe
computeremitsbeepcodes.
Thecomputerturnson,forexample:thefanmightspin,butthereisnovideoonthe
internaldisplayorexternalmonitoranditdoesnotbootintotheOperatingSystem.
Ifthecomputershowsanyoftheprevioussymptomsanditdoesnotbootup,usethis
documenttorestoretheBIOS.
ManyHPnotebookcomputershaveanHPBIOSRestoretoolthatmightbeabletorecoverthe
BIOSfromanearlierversionandrestorebasicfunctionality.Thistoolmightormightnotworkin
theeventofBIOScorruptiondependingonmanyfactors,butitisworthtryingintheeventthe
BIOShasbecomecorrupted.
RecoveringthenotebookBIOSusingakeypress
combination
WhenyouupgradetheBIOSonyournotebook,acopyofthepreviousBIOSversionisstored
onyourharddrive.ManyHPnotebookcomputershaveanemergencyBIOSrecoveryfeature
thatallowsyoutorecoverandinstallthelastknowngoodversionoftheBIOSfromthehard
drive,aslongastheharddriveremainsfunctional.Thisemergencyrecoveryfeatureis
separatefromtheBIOSandisdesignedtoworkintheeventofacatastrophicBIOSfailure.
NOTE:
Iftheharddiskpartitionisdeletedorinaccessible,followthestepsintheRecoveringthe
notebookBIOSusinganexternalstoragedevicesection.

FollowthesestepstorecoveranearlierversionoftheBIOSonyournotebook:
1. Turnoffthecomputer.
2. Plugthenotebookintoapowersourceusingthepoweradapter.
3. PressandholdtheWindowskeyandtheBkeyatthesametimewhilethecomputeris
off.
4. StillpressingtheWindowsandBkeys,pressandholddownthePowerbuttononthe
notebookfor1second,andthenreleasethePowerbuttonandthekeys.
ThePowerLEDlightremainson,andthescreenremainsblankfor30to60seconds.You
mighthearbeepingsounds.Eventually,anHPBIOSUpdatescreendisplaysandthe
BIOSupdatesautomatically.
IftheHPBIOSUpdatescreendisplays,continuetostep5.
IftheHPBIOSUpdatescreendoesnotdisplay,findyourconditionfromthefollowing
optionsandthenfollowthestepsforthatcondition:
ComputerbootsintoWindows
IfyourcomputerisabletobootintoWindows,updatetheBIOStothelatestversion
usingthestandardBIOSupdateprocedure.Followthesestepsforyourtypeof
computer:
UpdatingtheBIOS(Desktop)
UpdatingtheBIOS(Notebooks)
PowerLEDlightturnsoff
Thecomputerturnsoffifyoupressandholdthepowerbuttontoolong.Repeat
steps1through4above,thistimepressandholdthepowerbuttondownfor
betweenonetothreesecondsinstep4.
Afterrepeatedattempts,theHPBIOSUpdatescreendoesnotopen
Yourcomputerdoesnotsupportthisfunctionorithasahardwareproblemthatis
preventingthetoolfromopening.ContactHPSupportforfurtherassistance.

5. AftertheBIOSisrecovered,aContinueStartupbuttondisplaysandatimercounts
down.ClicktheContinueStartupbuttontorestartthecomputerimmediately.The
computerrestartsautomaticallywhenthetimerreacheszero.

6. Whenthecomputerrestarts,amessagesimilartothefollowingdisplays:AsystemBIOS

Recoveryhasoccurred.BIOSRecovery(500)EnterContinue.
PresstheEnterkeytocontinueimmediatelyortoallowthecomputertoreboot
automatically.
NOTE:
AfterrestoringtheBIOS,ifthecomputerrepeatedlydisplaysamessagethatthe
BIOShasbeenrecovered,performthestepsintheHPsupportdocument:HPBIOS
ApplicationSelectedisCorruptorMissing.
7. Afterrestarting,Windowsmightdisplayamessagestatingthatthecomputerwas
improperlyshutdownorthatabootproblemwasdetected.Readandrespondtothe
screenstocontinue.
RecoveringthenotebookBIOSusinganexternal
storagedevice
IftheHP_TOOLSvolume(Windows7)orUEFIpartition(Windows8,8.1,10)onyourHDDhas
beendeleted,youcanuseaUSBkeywithanHP_TOOLSvolumeasanalternative.Youcan
eithercreatethekeymanuallyorusetheCreateaUSBkeyoptionintheHPUEFIBIOS
UpdateSoftPAQ.TheUSBkeydoesnothavetobebootable.However,thisassumestheboot
blockisnotcorruptedinwhichcasearepairisrequired.
BeforeyoubegindownloadingtheBIOS
Collectthefollowingtoolsandinformation:
Theproductnumberofthecomputerthatisnotbootingintotheoperatingsystem
Theproductnumberisusuallylocatedonastickeronthebottomofthecomputer.If
youneedhelpfindingtheproductnumberonyourcomputerthatdoesnotbootintothe
operatingsystem,pleaserefertoOption3:UsetheproductlabelintheHPsupport
document,HowDoIFindMyModelNumberorProductNumber?.
AnothercomputerwithInternetconnection
Ifyourcomputerdoesnotbootintotheoperatingsystem,useanothercomputerwith
anInternetconnectiontodownloadtheBIOSandsaveittoaUSBdrive.

Step1:FindinganddownloadingtheBIOSforthecomputer
TofindanddownloadtheBIOSforyourcomputer,findthespecificproductnumberofthe
computerthatisnotbootingupandfollowthesesteps:
1. InsertablankUSBdriveintothecomputer.
2. GototheHPSoftware&DriverDownloadswebpage.
3. SelectyourCountry/languageoption,andthenselectDrivers&Downloads.
4. FindyourproducteithermanuallyorhavetheHPwebsiteidentifyyourcomputer
model,andthennavigatetotheproductpageforyourcomputermodel.
5. Selectthedrivelanguageandoperatingsystem(suchasMicrosoftWindows8.1(64
bit))ofthecomputerthatisnotbootingintotheoperatingsystem,andthen
clickSubmit.
6. Thewebpageliststheavailabledownloadsforyourcomputer.IfaBIOScategoryis
listed,clickBIOS.
7. ClickMoredetailstoviewtheoverview,installationinstructions,andsystem
requirementsfortheBIOSdownload.
ItisimportanttoreadtheOverviewandSystemrequirementssectionstoverifythat
theBIOSappliestothecomputerthatisnotrunning.InstallingaBIOSthatisnot
designedfortheprocessororoperatingsysteminyourcomputercouldcausethe
computertostopworking.
8. Totherightofthefilename,clickDownload,andthenclickRun.
9. IntheInstallShieldWizardwindow,clickNext.

ToinstalltheBIOSonthenotebookthatisnotrunningusingtheUSBkey:
1. Shutthecomputerdowncompletelyandwaitafewseconds.
2. PluganACadapterintothenotebook.
3. InserttheUSBkeywithHP_Toolsfileintothenotebook.
4. PressthepowerbuttonwhileholdingtheWindowsandBkeysforapproximatelyone
tothreeseconds.
TheHPBIOSUpdatescreendisplaysshowingtheprogressoftheupdate.
IftheHPBIOSUpdatescreendoesnotdisplay,findyourconditionfromthefollowing
optionsandthenfollowthestepsforthatcondition:

recoveringtheBIOS.
