2. 1901- He moved to Santiniketan and found an ashram, or a
Hindu monastery.
3. 1912- He introduced his works to prominent writers of England,
such as William Butler Yeats, Ezra Pound, etc.
4. 1913- He won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
5. 1920-1930 He travelled all around the world and earned
endless admirers of his work.

Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 in Calcutta. He was


an Indian poet, philosopher, and an artist who wrote many stories,
novels, poems, dramas, and composed music and many songs.
He was famous for introducing the best of Indian culture to the
West, and is generally regarded as the most creative artist of
India.
Tagore introduced Bengali language and literature around the
world. He showed his poems and dramas to famous English
writers such as William Yeats and Ezra Pound. He even got a
Nobel Prize in Literature for his work (Gitanjali: Song Offerings). In
addition, he influenced many figures around the world by his
work. He was also known as the greatest poet India has
produced. His drama, the King of the Dark Chamber was
produced on the Broadway in New York.
Tagore also improved education and religion in different places.
He built an ashram, or a monastery hall that had a school, a
library, and a hall to pray. He also founded Visva-Bharati
University, where teachers gave students personal guidance, and
teaching was often done under trees. He believed that classroom
teaching was bad, and teachers had to help students emotionally,
intellectually, and spiritually. Tagore wrote textbooks that are very
useful for students to study.
Tagore was also a very good artist. He contributed to modern
Indian art as his drawings are often moody and humorous. In
addition, his music skills are also remarkable. He developed a new
style of vocal music that is called Rabindra-sangit. He combined
classical tradition and love songs to create this new style. The
Bengal people really appreciate his songs and till now, they are
still played.
