Long, hot summer

I

wonderdo movie magazines in

warmer climates have Summer
Preview Issues?
Entertainment Weekly and Premiere both
have good Summer Previews. But
theyre based in New York.
I doubt that summer is such a reason
to celebrate, a monumental event, a
binding force for good, in those
southern climates. Just think of that first
warm day of the year here, when people
walk down the street smiling for no
other reason than the weather. Summer
makes us happy. Until, of course, it gets
too bleeding hot and we have to seek
refuge in an air-conditioned movie theatre.
So flip through the pages of our Summer Movie Preview, starting
on page 16, and pick out your summer must-sees.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith will be up there for a lot of
you. Even though the last two Star Wars movies were less than
stellar, theres something about the trailer for III that hints the
finale will satisfy. On page 24 Samuel L. Jackson, a.k.a. Jedi Knight
Mace Windu, tells you about his part in this final Star Wars film.
Cinderella Man looks promising. Regardless of how you feel about
him personally, Russell Crowe in a period piece about a boxer has a
lot of potential.
Then theres the pairing of Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg for
the newest rendition of H.G. Wells War of the Worlds.
If blockbusters dont do it for you maybe a kitschy little horror
remake like The House of Wax does. On page 28 Canadian
Elisha Cuthbert talks about the sticky situations involved in updating
the Vincent Price B-movie classic.
Yet another Canadian, Martin Short, brings his idiotic alter ego
Jiminy Glick to theatres this month in the big-screen comedy
Jiminy Glick in Lalawood. Its the kind of movie that will have a fairly
narrow audience, but those who like it will like it a lot. Our deputy
editor Ingrid Randoja talks to Short on page 30.
When I look at our cover this month, the pragmatist in me knows
that Jennifer Lopezs perfectly sun-kissed shoulder probably got that
way with the help of a sunless tanner and a team of makeup artists.
But it still makes me feel warm and summery. On page 34, La Lopez
chimes in on her contribution to summer cinema, Monster-in-Law,
about a topic she knows too well the difficult path to the altar.
Youll also notice that weve expanded
our Summer Preview Issue this year from
just a rundown of movies, to include summer
fashion (page 38), recipes for a backyard
party (page 40), and even summer vacation
ideas from the stars (page 50).
Start making plans, because while it may
still be May, as soon as Revenge of the Sith
opens on the 19th summer movie season
officially begins.

Mike Wilmot PLAYS MEAN

A couple of years ago a part came up in
a little British/Canadian co-production
called Its All Gone Pete Tong that comedian Mike Wilmots manager thought
he should audition for.
He was going on and on about how
perfect I was for it, says Wilmot on the
phone from Melbourne, Australia,
where the Toronto native is doing a
month-long gig at the Melbourne
Comedy Festival.
Funny thing was, the role was as pushy,
lecherous, manipulative manager Max
Haggar who tries to wring every penny
out of his client Frankie Wilde (Paul
Kaye), a simple-minded British DJ who
finds fame in the hedonistic Ibiza club
scene, only to lose his hearing and be
forced to rethink his life.
Wilmots manager must have known
Wilmot would pattern his performance
after him, like when Haggar starts
every utterance by barking, Let
me tell ya, Let me tell ya or
Listen to me, listen to me!
He loved it, he loved it. If
its about him, he loves it,
Wilmot says in the gravely
voice familiar to anyone
who has seen him do stand-up
in Canada or overseas, where
hes actually better known.

Wilmot won the prestigious Time Out

Comedy Award in England in 2002 and
the Barry Award (named after Barry
Humphries, a.k.a. Dame Edna) in
Australia in 2003.
Wilmot saw Its All Gone Pete Tong
for the first time at the Toronto
International Film Festival last fall and
was surprised by the level of disgust his
character inspired in the audience.
I was getting oooohs like a bad-guy

I almost
passed
out a few
times during
the club
scenes because
I was so overwhelmed by
the crowd,
says Wilmot

wrestler. It just felt very odd because

you play it for laughs but you can see
people getting uncomfortable.
The stylish, raw, but sweet, comedy
was directed by Calgary native Michael
Dowse, whose last effort, 2002s Fubar,
was also about lovable losers a
couple of mullet-wearing headbangers
(Paul Spence and David Lawrence)
who philosophize about beer, friendship
and their garage band.
Spence and Lawrence also appear in
Pete Tong as Horst and Alfonse, a
couple of German musicians who
collaborate with Frankie Wilde. Wilmot
says the three of them, along with
director Dowse, will work together
again: Were all close now, and I like
that. Its like old Woody Allen movies,
or Kevin Smith movies. It makes it
like travelling theatre.
The travelling for Pete Tong
involved a trip to the island
of Ibiza off the east coast
of Spain in August 2003,
right in the middle of the
record-breaking heat wave
that scorched much of Europe
and killed thousands in
France.
Theres no phony sweat in
that movie, jokes Wilmot.
Some of the club scenes
were shot in the afternoons
with extras, while others were
picked up at night amidst
writhing throngs of up to
10,000 real clubbers. I hate
that kind of thing, admits
Wilmot. Its too crowded, the
kids are all crazy on drugs, I
almost passed out a few times
during the club scenes because I was so
overwhelmed by the crowd.
But his acting must have been good
despite the discomfort. All the kids
thought Paul was a real DJ and I was a
real manager, he says with a laugh.
They were asking Paul for autographs
at the end, and I was pushing people
away like his manager.
Its All Gone Pete Tong opens in
Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto on
May 13th and expands to other cities
later in the month.

TICKETS ON SALE FOR L.O.T.R. IN T.O.

Vrttin provides
Middle-earth melodies

early two years ago, we told you about

something called The Lord of the
Rings: The Musical being developed for
the London stage.
The theatrical extravaganza was set to
cost $13-million (U.S.) and producers
were hoping to see it open early this year.
Jump ahead two years and we get the
surprising news that the production will
open not in London, but Toronto, on
February 2, 2006, with a staggering
budget of $27-million (CAD). The show
will play exclusively in Toronto for at least
nine months, although Tourism Toronto
and the Ontario government, each of

which invested $3-million, hope it lasts

for years, offsetting some of the damage
that still lingers from SARS.
Those who were dubious about a musical
version of J.R.R. Tolkiens masterwork had
many of their fears quelled when director
Matthew Warchus addressed a packed
press conference at Torontos Princess of
Wales theatre, where the production will
be mounted.
A lot of people have said to me Is it a
musical? which is code for Its not a
musical, is it? joked Warchus. Were
delighted to say that its not a musical in
any way you understand. And yet there will

t may be one of the most state-of-the-art

cinema complexes in the world, but when
you walk through the doors of the brand
new Paramount Vancouver at the corner of
Burrard and Smithe Streets dont be surprised if youre struck by a state of Zen.
We had a series of terms that we used
within the office, explains Andrew Gallici,
executive creative director of the company
responsible for the theatres interiors, Watt
International. One was A Techno Zen,
and the other was The Great Indoors.
That means indigenous-looking materials
were used to bring elements of the West
Coasts famed peace and tranquility into
the giant space. So the popcorn concessions became this really abstracted
woodblock, or is it a redwood trunk? It is,
it isnt. Were toying with abstraction,
says Gallici.

be more music, probably, in this production

than possibly any show youve ever seen.
That means instead of Hobbits belting
out show tunes, an underscore, songs and
anthems inspired by those in the book
will be delicately woven into the text.
Finnish folk group Vrttin, three
blond, Elvin-looking women involved in
creating the score, were in Toronto to
provide a sample of the shows otherworldly tunes. The presentation also
included a peek at one of the Black
Riders, a powerful effect involving an
actor atop a menacing stallion puppet.
In a pre-taped, behind-the-scenes clip,
Warchus answered another big question:
Why do a stage version of Lord of the
Rings at all?
To read the novel is to experience the
events of Middle-earth in the minds eye,
Warchus explained. To watch the films is
to view Middle-earth as though through a
giant window. Only in the theatre are we
actually plunged into the events as they
happen. The environment surrounds us.
We are in Middle-earth. MW

Then theres the water curtain, which is

more than just an esthetic embellishment.
One of the aspects of the water feature
was to bring that aspect of nature indoors,
but then to play with it from a technological
standpoint, so we project light patterns
onto the water to create an abstracted
image as opposed to a literal one,
explains Gallici.
But the water is also positioned in such
a way as to drive traffic, he continues.
One of the challenges is that a good deal
of the food services and customer services
are on the second floor but the vast majority
of theatres are on the third, so what the
water does is help lead the eye toward the
second set of escalators to promote traffic
movement.
Beyond the Zen, the theatre features all
the amenities of Famous Players most
modern complexes a wide array of
concessions including Burger King, Taco
Bell, KFC and TCBY, automatic ticket
machines and auditoriums that incorporate
stadium-style seating, wall-to-wall and
floor-to-ceiling screens and the latest in
sound and projection technology. MW

The actor recently came in an impressive second at the Mercedes Open
Pro-Am golf tournament in Hawaii, and
the developments at his day job have
been even more promising.
First Jackson guided Coach Carter to a
box-office win this past January, and
now he reprises his swashbuckling Jedi
Master Mace Windu in this months
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Predicting he fights in the film is like
predicting George Lucas will make
money on this, the sixth, Star Wars movie.
Its rousing, Jackson says of the big
fight scene during a recent interview in
New York. Its a great light saber battle
with 102 moves in three big rooms.
Jackson looks out a 48th-floor hotel
window at the snow carpeting Central
Park. He is in a galaxy far far away from
any workable golf courses or interplanetary war theatres. But he is the picture
of contentment. Barely a line etches his
56-year-old face and his bald scalp is
nestled under a wool baseball cap.
Hes still glowing from his near golf
victory, for which he teamed with pro
Stewart Cink. The pair actually tied for
first, but lost the title only in a tiebreaker.
Despite the many volatile characters
hes played on screen, he can apply Jedi

The buzz begins anew with George

into the evil Darth Vader. His Faustian
passage to the dark side is accompanied
by Mace Windus elevated presence in
the Jedi council.
And where in Episode I: The Phantom

should be cautious with Anakin, in
this film its Windu who expresses
concern about the young Skywalker.

interview | SAMUEL L. JACKSON

(who becomes the Empires evil emperor in the original
series), Windu declares, Its very dangerous putting them
together. I dont think the boy can handle it.
Jackson knew that Mace Windu would probably meet his
demise in this film after all, by Episode IV (or what most
people refer to simply as Star Wars), Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda
are the only remaining representatives of the Jedi order. So
Jackson had one final request for Lucas: to die in noble fashion.
I said it and George often hears the things I say, Jackson
says. Logically, like he said to me, When [the original trilogy]
starts, Luke is the only Jedi left and Obi-Wan is dead but kind
of a ghost and Yoda is still alive. I killed the other guys. The
real important character I can kill in this movie is you, so
theres no doubt youll go out in a blaze of glory.
Jackson folds his arms and chuckles. His pride in being a
part of the pop culture phenomenon fills the room. At one
point, franchise and actor appeared universes apart. But
Jackson wanted the part so bad he campaigned for it on the
talk-show circuit. Lucas reportedly bit with hesitation, fearing
that Jackson would want too much control.

me. They open, they close.
This time, management knew best. Coach Carter, in which
Jackson plays a basketball coach who forces his players to
excel in the classroom, finished tops at the box office in its
debut weekend and went on to collect more than $66-million
(U.S.). A perennial supporting player, Jackson saw his profile
climb a notch or two.
Its a profile that has been climbing steadily since 1995,
when he earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of
philosopher hitman Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantinos
Pulp Fiction.
Ive done it and I know what it all feels like, and I know what
it means, he says of the nomination. I have a place thats pretty
much cemented in the Hollywood community in terms of
liability, box-office viability and everything else. The only thing
an Oscar would do is jack my cheque up maybe $1-million.
But there are more important things for Jackson. He has
maintained a marriage to actress LaTanya Richardson since
1980 an eternity in show business. He overcame his

Jackson turns giddy when he recalls looking at the script

for Episode I. There he was, having a conversation with Yoda.
Going into wardrobe to try on his Jedi robes about put him
over the edge.
The Star Wars franchise has helped earn Jackson another
kind of Hollywood immortality. His films have made more
than $3-billion (U.S.), making him the highest-grossing actor
ever. Yep, that includes Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford,
whom Jackson knocked out of the top spot, and the two
Toms, Hanks and Cruise.
I dont think its going to make someone pay me more
money, but it kind of cements my place in cinema history,
he says.
Jackson, who lives in Los Angeles, says he has a New York
theatre actors antsiness. When the gigs are not lined up, he
worries. During a gap this winter, he pondered an invitation
from Kevin Spacey to perform at the Old Vic, the London
theatre which Spacey now directs.

And he has a 22-year-old daughter, Zoe, who graduated from
Vassar with a degree in psychology and film but is still trying
to figure out exactly what she wants to do with her life.
Shes always asking, How do you find something you love

shares Jackson. She talked about film school for a while, and

Im like, Oh, all right.
His Mace Windu persona is just as cool and understanding,
except when it comes time not to bea time that has arrived
with Episode III. Having appeared only briefly in Episode I, Windu
took on a more significant role as the Jedi who kills Jango Fett
in Episode II, and finally hits his stride dueling like a celestial
ninja in Epsiode III.
Or, as Jackson puts it with his trademark understatement,
Im a little bit more lethal in this one.

Now the worlds worst interviewer will finally get his

features Glick and his family (Jan Hooks plays his wife,
Dixie) as they converge on the Toronto International Film
Festival. Glick becomes the toast of the town, but he also finds

himself implicated in the murder of

a famed actress played by Elizabeth Perkins.
The film made its world debut at last years Toronto
International Film Festival, and it was in Toronto that Short
met with movie journalists to chat about a film that pokes
fun at movie journalists. But according to him, Jiminy Glick
represents much more than just a confused entertainment
reporter.
Its just a choice that hes a press member, says Short.
To me, the satire of Jiminy is that hes a moron with power.
He could be President of the United States [pregnant
pause], he could be a high school principal, he could be a
member of Parliament from a small area. Its interesting to
sometimes flip around television and think, Look at that
person talking to that guy. How did that guy get a show?
But you can also say when you meet your kids principal,
How did that guy end up being a teacher and actually have
responsibility?

native the chance to do what he does best, improvise. Short
is considered one of comedys best off-the-cuff talents, and
while Jiminy Glick in Lalawood has a story, every scene was
improvised with the actors playing off one another, looking
for the perfect comic bit.
I like to improvise, he says simply. When I did those
interviews on Primetime Glick, those were all improvised. And
what makes me laugh is when Jiminy asks long questions:
Who are you, howd you get there, would you go back and
then sits back proudly. Thats what makes me laugh, his
ridiculous arrogance. Sometimes I look at it and go, Who
said that? I dont even remember doing it.
Its such fun to watch Short harpoon his famous guests,
and for the most part his celebrity victims seem to really enjoy
playing along and going chin-to-chin with their clueless host.
But there was that one time on Primetime Glick when a certain
celebrity didnt get it.
I cant tell you who it is, Short says with a laugh as we
prod him for the name.
You know why, because with this interview it wasnt done in
front of an audience, it was done one-on-one and he was really
getting offended. I knew it as I was doing it and I could tell he
was getting hurt.

Im thinking, What do I do? And I kept making it worse,

he chuckles. He left in a huff and didnt sign his contract, he
felt he had been attacked. And I felt badly because thats not
the agenda and, obviously, I dont think he had seen the show.
I think if he had seen three interviews he would have said, I
get it, I get it.
The big question for Short is whether or not Jiminy Glick
will make a successful transition from the small-to-big screen.
You just have to look at the track record of most SNL characters
whove been given their own movies to realize how difficult it
is for a TV character to score with movie audiences.
Well, we dont know what will be successful, he says
thoughtfully. Certainly Austin Powers has been successful
and he could have been a sketch character. When I was doing
Ed Grimley on Saturday Night Live there were many, many
studios interested in doing an Ed Grimley movie, but I felt a
six-minute sketch is its own art form and to be respected. But
Jiminy Glick never lived in a sketch, he lives in the real world,
he sits down to talk to Ice Cube, he sits down and talks to
Brendan Fraser or Jerry Seinfeld. Hes not talking to other
characters per se. So thats why it seems he could fit into
another world.

everything would have fallen apart.
The most obvious change is the level
of secrecy thats surrounded her union
with Anthony. For months after their
private marriage ceremony, the pair
refused to even admit they were husband
and wife. It wasnt until awards season
began late last year, that the couple
started holding hands in public. They
even performed a duet at the Grammys
this past February.
I dont have some kind of strategy
its not like, Okay, this is what Im
going to do, and this is how this is going
to happen and this is how its going to
effect my career, the 35-year-old
Bronx-born actor explains as she sips
from a bottle of mineral water. Its
about my life. Its about a quality of life
thing for me. In the beginning, I always
thought that if I was just honest with
people, they wouldnt judge me or

Shall We Dance last fall, and then nabbed

a part in the romantic comedy Monsterin-Law, slated for release this month.
No stranger to real-life mothers-inlaw, the thrice married Lopez (Ojani
Noa, Cris Judd and Anthony) was
thrilled to discover Oscar-winner Jane
Fonda would break her 15-year absence
from movies to appear as her nemesis
in Monster-in-Law (Fonda last appeared
with Robert De Niro in the 1990 drama
Stanley & Iris).
I couldnt believe it when they said
Jane Fonda wanted to work with me
because shes always been one of my
idols, says Lopez. Its wonderful when
youre able to work with actors or
actresses with such a rich film history
behind them, because you can learn so
much just being around them.
Directed by Legally Blondes head man
Robert Luketic, Monster-in-Law features

Feel the love: Fonda, Michael Vartan and Lopez

It feels like when youre working with Jane that

youre entering another time period, says Lopez
make up false stories about me. But I
quickly realized it didnt work that way.
Finally, you say to yourself, Im going
to just keep out. Its not going to matter
to me. It doesnt matter what people say
anymore. But as much as you do that
stuff, things slip under the door and
through the cracks. And thats destructive. It just is. But its hard for people to
understand, and I get that.
In danger of being tagged with the
box-office poison label after Gigli and
Jersey Girl, Lopez appeared in the relatively successful Richard Gere movie

Lopez as Charlotte Charlie Honeywell,

a frustrated thirtysomething who has all
but given up on finding the love of her
life. After going out on one humiliating
date after another, Charlie meets sweet,
considerate, gorgeous Kevin (Michael
Vartan). As their relationship becomes
more serious, Kevin insists Charlie
meet his mom, Viola Fields (Fonda),
who is in a less-than-perfect state of
mind after losing her job as a TV news
anchor. While, at first, Charlie likes her
future in-law, the two-faced, vicious Viola
cant stand Charlie and is determined
famous 36 | may 2005

to make sure her son dumps her.

Catfights, scheming and slapstick ensue.
It feels like when youre working
with Jane that youre entering another
time period, when it was just only about
the acting, says Lopez. Thats what
she is about. She is a real, true person
whos like, Im here to do work. I
thought about it. This is what Im going
to do. Im going to take risks. Im going
to improvise and you better be ready to
go with me. I like to think that Im that
type of person as well, and I was ready
to fly with her.
Having just released the new album
Rebirth in March, will this be the year
Lopez finally goes on tour? She says its
a possibility.
Last year, I was talking about touring
with Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys, Sheryl
Crow, and they all said, Dont tour if
you dont have to. Its no fun at all. Ive
gotten the worst reports about touring.
So Im kind of lucky that I make
movies, says Lopez.
Still, she insists she will hit the road
eventually. When Im faced kind of
with, Do I do this or do I do this, and I
really want to do the movie, I usually opt
for the movie. But before its all said and
done, I really do want to go on tour and
Im trying to plan for this summer.
That tour could begin fairly soon now
that Lopez has finished her next film,
director Lasse Hallstrms dysfunctionalfamily drama An Unfinished Life, with
Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman.
Lasse called me out the blue and said
he just wanted me for the role, Lopez
says with a smile. Its always good when
people call and say, I saw this. I went to
this movie and you were really good,
with that surprised sound in their voice.
Youre like, Thanks.
And with her first upscale womens
fashion line having launched this past
February, Lopez has more than just
movies and music to give her a fresh,
new perspective on her career.
I always feel like Im right at the
beginning, although I do feel like Im
entering Phase Two, she says, as she
stares out the window. Thats what I
feel like. I feel like everything that Ive
done and accomplished was great, but
it was this other person. Im older now
and more mature, so this is a new
Jennifer Lopez.

Summer trends flood in from the worlds hottest climates

Boost the shine of winter-dried

hair with Krastase Bain
Olo-Relax ($26, Delineation,
Toronto), an intensely nourishing
shampoo that banishes frizz
and wrests control of
unmanagable hair.

hey say travel is a broadening experience.

It nurtures tolerance, awareness of other
cultures, open-mindedness.
Sartorially speaking, even armchair travel
can offer lessons in how to dress for
weather we may have forgotten about in
the cryogenic stupor of a Canadian
January. Or February. Or March. Or April.
Even though this summers best trends
take us, climatalogically speaking, as far
away from Canada as possible, theyre still
wearable here below the treeline. Well, at
least from May to August.
Natural colours, earthy colours, exuberant and fresh. Just the thing to zap
away the lingering effects of a long,
heinous winter. In the same way that a
vase of flowers can make a room pop,
one bright piece can lift your wardrobe
into summer. This year, anything with a
floral or tropical palm-frond pattern will
do the trick nicely.
Any more than one bold item,
however, and you risk having the words
fashion victim whispered as you pass
sidewalk cafs crowded with smirking style
appraisers. Dont give them the satisfaction.

So try this: a full skirt thats casual and easy

to wear, not to mention way more relaxed than
a skin-tight mini. And then there are the
tunics. Generously cut and forgiving, theyre
the perfect hot weather item, executed in natural fabrics and an array of cheerful colours.
If youre pattern- or colour-reticent, well,
thats why the fashion gods invented accessories. So snap on that chunky wooden
bracelet. No? Then how about an eyecatching necklace adorned with shells,
wood or feathers?
Finally, let us ponder that perennial
female obsession, shoes, and the latest
silhouette in female footwear, the
wedge. Not only is the wedge modern, it
adds intimidating inches to your height, all
without having to negotiate a pair of stilettos.
This is important! I mean, have we learned
anything from watching those spill-prone
contestants on Americas Next Top Model as
they attempt to negotiate a runway in their
stilts? Trust us. A wedge is the best hedge
against broken ankles and public ridicule.
So let Tyra Banks find someone else to make
fun of on national TV. For the sake of your
dignity, its always best to remain upright.

GRILL

PARTY
Chips and mini-weenies not

Pop some mouth-watering
hors doeuvres on the barbecue
and feel the love I BY MARNI WEISZ

ummer entertaining often involves

the barbecue. But what if you dont
want to do a whole meal? We asked
chef Rob Rainford, host of Food Network
Canadas barbecue show License to Grill,
for three easy finger-food recipes that can
be prepared on the barbecue.
First, make sure youve got the right
amount of food. According to Rainford,
The rule of thumb if youre not going to
serve dinner, and there are only going to
be hors doeuvres, is to have at least five
per person.
Also, while its nice to be able to serve
snacks right off the grill, if you hate the
idea of being chained to the barbecue all
night, Rainford says you can make the
hors doeuvres in advance and serve them
at room temperature. Most people arent
super-concerned about having hot, hot
hors doeuvres anyway, says Rainford.

MUSHROOM KABOBS

Ingredients (serves 12):

2 pounds of whole button mushrooms,

cleaned and stems trimmed
24 bamboo skewers, soaked in water
for a minimum of 30 minutes
Marinade:
1 cup of dry red wine (250ml)
1/2 cup of olive oil (124ml)
2 tablespoons of lemon juice (30ml)
4 large cloves of garlic, minced
6 teaspoons of dried thyme
2 teaspoons of sea or kosher salt (10ml)
2 teaspoons of freshly cracked
black pepper (10ml)

FIGS STUFFED WITH

BLUE CHEESE AND
PROSCIUTTO WRAPPED

Ingredients (serves 12):

12 figs
4 walnuts
1/4 pound of blue cheese (113g)
1 tablespoon cognac (15ml)
1/4 pound prosciutto, thinly sliced (113g)
1 teaspoon cracked pepper (5ml)
Raspberry Vinegar:
1/2 cup frozen defrosted raspberries (125ml)
1 teaspoon cracked pepper (5ml)
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (15ml)

Method:
1. Place the mushrooms in a large plastic
bag. Combine all of the marinade ingredients and pour over the mushrooms.
Seal the bag and place in the fridge to
marinate for at least 20 minutes,
although two to three hours is optimal.
2. Preheat the grill to high heat. 3. Remove
the mushrooms from the bag and discard
the marinade. Place mushrooms on
skewers. 4. Place skewers on the grill and
cook for approximately five to 10 minutes
with the lid up, turning on a regular basis
to ensure even cooking.

CRISPY POTATO SKINS

Ingredients (serves 12):

6 large russet potatoes (baked for

1 hour at 400F/200C and cooled)
1 cup bacon, cooked and
chopped (250ml)
1 tablespoon olive oil (15ml)
2 cups provolone cheese,
shredded (500ml)
1/4 cup green onions, chopped (60ml)
salt and pepper to taste

Method:

Stuffed figs

Method:
1. Cut into the figs halfway, being careful
not to go all the way through. In a small
bowl mix together blue cheese, cognac,
walnuts and pepper. Mix together using a
fork until well blended. 2. Stuff the figs
with cheese mixture. Wrap prosciutto evenly
around figs. If necessary, secure with a
toothpick. Place on well-oiled tray. 3. For
the raspberry vinegar, in a small bowl mix
together raspberries, cracked pepper and
vinegar, reserve. 4. Preheat barbecue to
medium high heat (375F/190C). Oil the
grill. 5. Brush the figs with raspberry vinegar.
Place on grill and close lid. Continue to
cook for two minutes. Rotate figs and cook
for a further two minutes or until prosciutto
is crispy and cheese is melted. Remove
from grill and serve with a raspberry sauce
(optional).

1. Cut baked and cooked potatoes in

half, lengthways. 2. Scoop flesh from
potatoes leaving 1/4 inch in each potato.
3. Drizzle with olive oil.
4. Add salt and pepper to
taste. 5. Sprinkle with green
onions, bacon and cheese.
6. Preheat barbecue to
220F/104C or medium
high. Place potatoes over welloiled grill. 7. Cook for four to
five minutes with lid closed or
until cheese has melted and
bottoms of potatoes are crispy. Crispy potato skins

It figures just as the weather is finally improving, a whole bunch of great TV debuts on DVD.
Where were these sets back in February when my vitamin D levels were so low I could barely
slither off the couch?
One highlight is Entourage (May 10). HBOs latest take-no-prisoners comedy series, Entourage
is a profane, hilarious look at an up-and-coming actor/hottie from Queens, N.Y., and the buddies
he brings with him to L.A. to, yknow, keep him real. Produced by Mark Wahlberg who surely

he rode his bikes: standing on his pedals
and leaning forward, head over his handlebars. But the Bandito got the checkered
flag at age 50 from a rare form of lung
cancer caused by asbestos exposure,
possibly from his fireproof racing suits.

STARS ON THEIR
FAVOURITE SUMMER
VACATION SPOTS

JULIA STILES Tulum, Mexico. Its a

beautiful, tranquil town on the Yucatan
Peninsula. I love to go there and relax.
The weather is magnificent. Theres lots to
do, the people are warm and welcoming
and the food is terrific.
NATALIE PORTMAN Amsterdam.
Thats my favourite European city because
its so open. I like how everything is
allowed there. I think the reason that so
many people do drugs in our country is
because its not allowed. Drugs arent so
cool when you can get them and youre not
going to get into trouble for taking them.

LARA FLYNN BOYLE I first went to

Ireland many years ago, touring for a full
month with friends. I go back as often
as I can now. I find I just cant get out of
the pubs. Its so wonderful to have all
these great conversations with people.
DIANE LANE Buenos Aires. I visited
that city and fell in love with it. Just
remember that their summer is our

the concerts at the Old Whaling Church
in Edgartown, everybody has played
there.

winter because Argentina is below the

equator. Dont miss the Recoleta
Cemetery. I photographed it like crazy
and I hope to paint from the pictures
some day. The monuments are so
dramatic, haunting and beautiful. Its
like an outdoor museum.

KIM CATTRALL Vancouver. Eat at

the Liliget Feast House. Its the only
restaurant with native food in the
longhouse tradition. Lucy Mae Browns
has West Coast cuisine. I love the
atmosphere, Im not into cold lighting
and cubicles. Lumiere has been
acclaimed as being one of the best
restaurants in North America, and
Portuguese Joes Fish Market has the
best chunked smoked salmon on the
planet. Its like candy.

JANE LEEVES Gravetye Manor, near

TIM ROBBINS Seattle. All cities are

East Grinstead, sort of in the middle of

nowhere if youre willing to venture out of
London. [Its] an old Elizabethan
manor house, one of those Relais &
Chteaux hotels. Its so spectacular. Its
where my husband and I spent our
honeymoon. Its a gourmets delight.
Youre so completely taken care of at this
hotel, and it sort of gives you that warm,
wonderful Dickensian feeling.

defined by the people who live in them,

and theres just an independent spirit in a
lot of the people who live in Seattle that
is admirable. Cats Eye Cafe is a
neighbourhood place decorated with cat
paraphernalia, they make everything
fresh. Pattys Eggnest is, arguably, the
best breakfast anywhere. The Queen City
Grill has the best seafood.

KELLY LYNCH Marthas Vineyard,

up there. Take a drive up Mount Tantalus

for the most beautiful view of the island.
Insofar as hotels go, Id recommend
The Halekulani and the Kahala Mandarin
Oriental, where dolphins swim in a lagoon
around the resort.

went as an entire family, and the images
are still vivid in my mind. We arrived in

the morning, flop in the water, have
breakfast, read a book. You just float,
meditate and let it go.
