A technique for recording the abutment screw angulation of

cement-retained implant prostheses
Ju-Hyoung Lee, DDS
Determining the abutment screw channel of a cementretained implant restoration with 2 dimensional,
photographic, or radiographic records is difcult
because of limited information on the abutment screw
angulation.1-10 This article describes a technique for
registering the abutment screw angulation with 2 digital
photographs.
PROCEDURE
1. Mark a line in the center of a small wooden blade
and x it to an adjacent tooth on the cast with a
sticky wax (Fig. 1).
2. With a tripod, make 2 photographs of the cast as
follows: one with the abutment and long screw
but without the prosthesis (Fig. 2A), and another
with the abutment, regular screw, and prosthesis
(Fig. 2B).2,4

3. Manipulate the images in a presentation program

(PowerPoint 2013; Microsoft Corp). Select Insert on
the tool bar. Insert a rectangle in a slide (Shapes
>Rectangles). Click the right mouse button on the

rectangle and select Format Shape. Choose No Fill

and click Close. Copy and paste it.
4. Right-click on one rectangle and select Format
Shape. Mark the Picture or Texture Fill radio button
and click the File button to open the Insert Picture
dialog box (Picture or Texture Fill>File). Insert the
photograph with no prosthesis in one rectangle.
Drag the Transparency bar to provide the translucency, and click Close. Place the photograph with
the prosthesis in the other rectangle in the previously described manner except for the translucency
process (Fig. 3).
5. Place the photograph with no prosthesis on the
photograph with the prosthesis. To achieve an accurate superimposition, move and rotate the
photograph with no prosthesis (Fig. 4). Save this
slide in the patients record.
