PRISONERS OF HOPE

July 2008
EDITORIAL..BROTHER N. NKOMO
A few months ago it struck me that writing editorials is not half the fun that I thought it would be. I actually
wondered at the wisdom of having started the column in this Newsletter. It is not always easy to put one‟s
thoughts out in the open for scrutiny. It is not always easy to express one‟s ideas in such a way to ensure that
a varied audience will not misinterpret what you mean to say. Why such an introduction? Well, after the col-
umn I wrote last month I hesitated about this particular column but I would not have peace within if I didn‟t
express my thoughts.
While on a trip last week, I decided to pick out a news magazine that I could read while waiting for my food to
arrive in a restaurant. I had been mulling over a number of topics for the editorial and as I read through the
magazine, an advert jumped out at me. The advert got my mind racing as I began to bemoan what I often view
as “a lack of vision” that we tend to have as a church. The advertisement brought home to me the fact that we
definitely do have things to learn from other denominations even at this late hour in earths‟ history. It got me
thinking as to how serious we are about proclaiming the coming of the Messiah.
The advert in question related to one of the mega-churches of the world coming through to Cape Town and
planting a church in the city centre. This caught my attention because Cape Town was chosen as one of the
cities around the world where the Adventist church was to plant a church in the CBD. The program, for those
who may not have heard about it, is named “Hope For Big Cities”. There are two points on which I will dwell
in terms of lessons that we can learn from this mega-church.
The first is that this particular grouping took the task of planting a church so seriously that they sent a
“missionary” pastoral couple to work on the project full-time to ensure its “success”. This means that they
have a pastor and wife team whose sole responsibility is to plant a church in the Cape Town CBD. This is not
very unlike the modus operandi of the apostles who used to do the same from city to city. Contrasting this
with our own church efforts led me to wonder whether we have lost our vision. The baton as to which pastor is
in charge of our “Hope For Big Cities” in the Cape has passed from pastor to pastor and word is that we unfor-
tunately do not have a budget for a full time pastor to be given the responsibility. We were therefore in a situa-
tion, until recently, when one church eventually got the go ahead to take up the project on its own, where a lot
of dithering took place because of a lack of leadership. It is therefore little wonder that “nothing” happened for INSIDE THIS ISSUE

iar? Their entire world-wide church is fully behind the planting of this branch in Cape Town and the church is
probably spending more on single Sunday of services than the entire budget allocated by the Adventist church
to the initiative of planting a church in Cape Town. I know we have differing financial needs and different
funding structures in the church but the amount allocated for the Hope for the Big Cities campaign is less than
a months‟ salary of many of our worldwide members! Lastly, for the more technologically savvy, which is cru-
cial for cosmopolitan places like Cape Town, their website is up to date and contains an abundance of infor-
mation. I challenge you to find something on the internet that gives you up to date information on the pro-
gress of any of the “Hope For Big Cities” campaigns in South Africa let alone Cape Town and then email me to
tell me how old the information is and how long it took you to find it.
None of what this mega-church is doing is rocket-science and I am convinced many in our church have a
stronger vision than they have. The question for us is, “what are we doing with our vision?” We need to arise
and work for the coming of the Lord is at hand. We need to realize that we cannot sit and wait for programs to
be handed down from the GC. We are the foot soldiers. We are the ones that God has blessed with means. We
are the ones with spheres of influence that include those that have not accepted Christ. We need to join hands
with the Holy Spirit to spread the Gospel….and we need to be humble enough to observe and implement that
which is in accordance with the Bible, even if it is from the “fallen” churches.

Those who are sons of God will represent Christ in character. Their works will be
perfumed by the infinite tenderness, compassion, love, and purity of the Son of God.
And the more completely mind and body are yielded to the Holy Spirit, the greater
will be the fragrance of our offering to Him. RH Nov. 24, 1896

But strange fire has been offered in the use of harsh words, in self-importance, in
self-exaltation, in self-righteousness, in arbitrary authority, in domineering, in op-
pression, in restricting the liberty of God's people, binding them about by your plans
and rules, which God has not framed, neither have they come into His mind. All
these things are strange fire, unacknowledged by God, and are a continual misrepre-

…our hearts are naturally depraved, and we are unable of ourselves to pursue a right
course. It is only by the grace of God, combined with the most earnest effort on our
part, that we can gain the victory. CT 544

As long as life shall last, there is need of guarding the affections and the passions
with a firm purpose. There is inward corruption, there are outward temptations, and
wherever the work of God shall be advanced, Satan plans so to arrange circum-
stances that temptation shall come with overpowering force upon the soul. Not one
moment can we be secure only as we are relying upon God, the life hid with Christ in
God. Letter 8b, 1891

If we are following Christ, His merits, imputed to us, come up before the Father as
sweet odor. And the graces of our Saviour's character, implanted in our hearts, will
shed around us a precious fragrance. The spirit of love, meekness, and forbearance
pervading our life will have power to soften and subdue hard hearts and win to
Christ bitter opposers of the faith. 5T 174
