For over four decades, discriminaiing

specifiers have come to rely on

Moldcast Lighting to consistently
provide high quality rugged comme'cial outdoor luminaires. For the last
quarter of a century, N,4oldcast has
led the way in the design of innovative
and efiective reflector systems which
have enhanced nighttime visibility.
ln additi0n to the ContraOline, other
original Moldcast products such as

the Peric ine, the Paracyl, the

l\,4D1,

the Peric ine Bollard, and the Solus

create practical lighting soluiions
for engineers, architects, landscape
archltects and llghting consultants
throughout North Amerlca.

ContraGline -"The Unshoebox"

The bronze shoebox has emerged as the standard parking ot fixture over the last 25 years pr

mariy n response to

the inefficient g obes and glare producing refractors used previously. Frequently however, the major def ciencies of
these "cutoff" products are overlooked.

Horizontal Lamp Shoebox

Although this originai cutoff product with a flat glass lens does an excellent job of
controlling brightness above 90". t has a couple of major imitations.

Poor Uniformity of lllumination

Narrow Pole Spacings

Because the area under the fixture

the use of additional poles and equip-

Vertical Lamp Shoebox

Because of the uniformity and spacing limitations of horizontal lamp products,
many manufacturers began promoting the vertlcal lamp alternative. While these
systems for the most part successfully addressed those lssues, they do create a

few major detrimental effects.

High Angle Glare

Light Trespass

seriously impair nighttime visibility.
ln fact, most of these vertical lamp
fixtures don't even meet IES

Sky Pollution
In recent years, there has been an increased awareness and concern about the effect of uncontrolled city lights on

the abiliiy to view stars. Well organized groups of astronomers and environmentalists have lobbied states and
municipalitles for legislation which prohibits or restrjcts the iype of high angle light generated by poorly controlled
vertical lamp luminaires.

Unique Optics
The ContraCline opiica system
offers a better method of area lighting.
The stacked cornbination rellectors
surround ng the vertical lamp provide

the pole spacings and uniformity typical

of vertical lamp shoeboxes, with the

control of glare and light trespass

similar to horizontal lamp systems.
Unlike other stacked louver/ref lector

systems, each reflecting element of

the Contracline optical systern has
precisely engineered and contoured
upper and lower surfaces.
The compound reflective action of

these elements interact to provide

exacting control of light distribution
and cutotf.
The illustration at right graphically
shows how these re'lector elements
interact. The reflectors are positioned

to provide sharp cutoff to the lamp arc

tube and all arc tube images at 77rlr"
above nadir. Also, the segments
produce overlaoping patterns ensur ng

an extremely uniform distribution

without dark spots or hot spots.

-t

By night, low glare high

performance luminaires.
The maximum candlepower values
produced by the Contracline at
around 70" above nadir, provide high
light levels and uniform distributions.
These are two critical components of
visibility. Also, this distribution assures

wide pole spacings resulting in significant life cycle economies. The sharp
cvlot'l al 77 1 l2' virtually eliminates

fixture glare (a major detriment to

visibility) at normal viewing angles
and provides superior control of llght
trespass and sky pollution.
