ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Dear Reader,
Developments:
ABRA has been actively involved in several development
application consultative processes in the last two months.
ALDI Supermarket, 4 shops and 111 car parks - facing Port Road
at Aldinga Village.
I met with other representatives of the Southern Community
Coalition on August 21st. Considerable effort has been put into the
design of this complex by the developers, to make it appropriate
and suitable for the Historic Township zone it is being proposed
for. The basic supermarket outline has been altered to a low 8m
high building height with pitched, hipped colorbond roof including
feature gables and verandah detailing. The overall size is smaller
than both Coles and Drakes.
Generally the meeting participants felt the design etc was well
prepared and appropriate for that location.
All of us at the meeting were concerned, however, about the traffic
impacts. Traffic studies done as part of the development
application were purely on traffic expected to be generated by that
site with its two driveways. They did not take into account the five
additional driveways entering that section of Port Road from the
new On The Run development opposite.
Traffic studies also referred to the pm peak and not the am peak,
when traffic will be trying to enter South Road not come into Port
Road from it.
ABRA, as for other SCC groups, responded objecting to the
proposal in its current form due to traffic and access problems.
Our submission also recommended a study be done on traffic
predictions taking into account both the supermarket complex and
On The Run influences as well as increasing traffic developing
from further developments in the area. (The area behind the
Aldinga sporting / Galilee complexes is also designated for future
housing.)

After committee discussion we supported this proposal provided

the final speed limit for that section is not reduced.
I also attended Aldinga-Sellicks Alliance meetings on Aug 24th as
well as Oct 12th mentioned above. A proposal is being looked
into to establish an interactive website with search engine to
facilitate people being able to quickly locate services and
businesses located in the Aldinga Bay catchment area. Existing
facilities such as the Council Directory are too comprehensive
and not localised. Aldinga On Display 2016 planning for
February next year is continuing.

Aldinga District Centre.

ABRA put in a submission supporting the proposal generally and
recommending that an art / performing arts centre be incorporated
into the design, possibly using the planned Rec Centre extension
which is already being catered for in its design.
Since that submission, at a recent October 12th Aldinga-Sellicks
Alliance meeting it came to light that there is a proposal or
concept being looked at to incorporate such a facility in the new
Youth Centre being proposed for the District Centre development.

The blessing and official opening of Freds Van at the Aldinga

Community Centre was held on 28th September. This volunteer
service is currently providing around 50 hot meals for families
and individuals in need. People involved report an alarmingly
high number of those include children. In conjunction with Oz
Harvest and Christian Care and Support, this need is being
catered for as well as we can with reduced Federal Government
support. We appreciate the businesses, local and otherwise who
contribute to this service.

Old Coach Road upgrade.

I hope you enjoy the issue.

A scientist finds God - unscientifically!

Born and raised in Georgia (next to Russia), Kaha
became a Bio-physycist; worked in a Georgian nuclear
reactor; in Adelaide did post graduate studies in computer
programming, where he also earned a Phd. in Oceanography and later fully qualified as a solicitor specialising in
Migration Law.
Now all that is to put the lie to the idea that science and
faith don't mix, and that belief in a Creator is too
impractical for an intelligent person.
But Kaha wants to go further than that: and say that
although he had long wanted to write a book about how
science proves/demonstrates creation, that wasn't the
issue. The Bible says even the demons believe God
exists; but they tremble! Plain belief and even church life
don't qualify. We have to know God personally (that's
what a Christian is - someone who has had an encounter
with Christ's reality, and is forever changed).
Despite a Georgian Orthodox background his search for
God took him into studies of many paths and religions.
Then, in 2003 as he was simply walking between rooms,
'in a second' he realised he was separated from God and
he suddenly, 'deeply regretted his life'.
Circumstances changed and began to lead him into
church life in Adelaide where his lights were turned fully
on. Eureka! Science discovers God!
Kaha says, although this might sound incompatible with a
scientific mind, there are many physicists who are true
believers in Christ (and not just church goers).
His busy Adelaide legal practice is motivated by a deep
desire to be of help to people who might really suffer
without it. Mercy in Justice.
Try this prayer:
I don't believe in you Jesus but I need your help!

Aldinga Beach
CFS

One of our cadets from Aldinga beach CFS,

Tye Charlton was selected to attend the Australian
Cadet championships in NSW over the school holidays.
Tye was selected from a large group of potential candidates, to travel to NSW
as part of the South Australian Cadet team. It is a credit to his skill and dedication
to training that he was selected from such a large group.
Congratulations Tye!
Tye has written about his experience at the championships below:

"A couple of weeks ago now, I received an email from the CFS headquarters in Adelaide, saying that I had been selected as part of the South Australian team to compete in the 2015 Australian fire Cadet Championships in New South Wales. 26 teams competed this year in the championships, from Tasmania, NSW, Victoria, Western
Australia and of course two teams from South Australia. All 12 of us SA cadets meet on Sunday the 27th of September at Adelaide Shores resort and got to know who was in our team. In was in ALPHA with 5 others (2 from Naracoorte,
1 from Morphett vale, 1 from Napperby and 1 from Morgan).
So it was safe to say we were all complete strangers to each other and were about to fly to Sydney. We flew to Sydney
on Monday to compete against the other 24 teams. 20 of these teams had known and been training with each other for 2
years or more (NSW RFS). when we landed in Sydney we caught a bus to Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre,
about 100km South of Sydney. Tuesday was the first day of gruelling competition and 6 of our biggest events greeted us
that day. Wednesday was our last day of competition, which included our best event result of 6th overall in the rake hoe
drill. When we all landed home on Thursday the 1st of October we were all tired and worn out from competition, but
were also sad that is had come to an end so quickly.
In the week since we have contacted each other on Facebook and now talk regularly. Lastly I would like to thank all of
the crew from Aldinga Beach CFS Brigade for their teaching over the last 5 years and also SA Water for sponsoring
both Alpha and Bravo SA CFS teams.
We were the only non-self funded teams in the championships this year. I would like to add that if any cadets from either SES or CFS get the chance to compete in any competition, whether national, state or regional, you will never forget
the special time you had during the competition."

Sunny Days in the Garden

Where better to enjoy the outdoors and gain a sense of wellbeing than in our Community Garden! The flowers are
blooming, the vegies are growing and the trees are lush and
green!
On Tuesdays 10.30 till 11.30
join us for an hour of messy,
natural fun! Little ones love
to explore the natural world,
and they can dig, plant,
smell, touch and even eat the
things they find.

ALDINGA COMMUNITY
GARDEN
Join our garden volunteers on Mondays or Wednesdays 9
till 12 to help maintain
and grow our wonderful
garden, or drop in to buy
some freshly picked organic vegies. Wheelchair
friendly, with flat paths
and raised, no-dig beds,
the garden is a wonderful
place to potter and chat,
and there's great excitement with plans afoot for 16 new raised beds!
SELLICKS COMMUNITY GARDEN
Sellicks Garden is undergoing a makeover, gaining 3 new
sculptural garden beds. Fresh
organic vegies are growing fruit
trees will be planted, with a link
to the children's play area
planned. Come along on
Wednesdays between 4 and 5.30
and get involved !
For more info on the Aldinga Garden, phone the Centre
on 8556 5940. For Sellicks, phone Matt on 0414760533.

THE GIANT GARDEN LIZARD

This concrete fellow lives in
the Aldinga Garden. I hear
on the grapevine that
Reception children in all
Aldinga schools, and children at preschool have been making painted tiles to cover
our lizard. Watch this space - it will
be happening soon!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Coastal Views,
Sometimes I despair of the human race.
Over the long weekend I had 10 charity bins broken into
and cans and bottles stolen that were for the Cans for
Cancer, from which, over the years, we have donated
$90,000 to Cancer Research.

Aldinga Beach
SISTERS CELEBRATE
With an aim to Fill the Hopgood no one was more
surprised than the members of Sisters of Abundance Choir
when they performed to a sold out house with their 10th
Anniversary Concert Sing it Again, Sista! at Hopgood
Theatre on Sunday 11th October.
Members worked hard to promote the concert and it all paid
off when tickets for the 492 seat theatre started selling like
hot cakes.
The concert told the story of the choir through the songs
and introductions by choir members and a brief slide show
featuring photos of each year. Among the many songs
featured were Rhythm of Life, I Say a Little Prayer, For the
Beauty of the Earth, Bohemian Rhapsody, Africa and I will
Survive.
Concert attendees gave the ladies a standing ovation at the
conclusion of the concert and went away still taping feet
and minds buzzing to the wonderful tunes they had
experienced. Audience members included a number of
former choir members who were thrilled to witness how far
the choir has come along.
Part proceeds from the concert will be given to Seeds of
Affinity Pathways for Women Inc who assist women in
the community, who have lived prison experience, to have
the chance of a successful life.
Members of the public can get another chance to see Sisters
of Abundance in action at 3pm on Sunday 8th November at
the Cumberland Park Community Centre when they will
Sing it Again, Sista! and be performing many of the songs
from their concert. Tickets available at the door are $15
and $10 which include tea and coffee at the conclusion of
the concert.

Aldinga

Bay

Community

Christmas

It is that time of the year again to start putting

Christmas dates in your diaries. Get a pen and circle
the 13th December 2015 to come participate and
celebrate the Aldinga Bay Community Christmas
Carols. The event will once again be held at Symonds
Reserve (next to the Aldinga Community Centre),
Stewart Avenue, Aldinga Beach.
The FREE Carnival activities will be taking place from
4.00 till 7.00pm. These activities include a jumping
castle for the kids, a chance to pat a farmyard animal,
ride a pony or even challenge a friend in a sumo
wrestle! You may like to get your face painted, or try
your hand at one of the craft activities. True Heights
Dance Company will also provide some dance
entertainment at 5.30pm.
The carnival activities will be complemented by a
range of food stalls. Along with a variety of hot and
cold drinks, stalls will sell lollies, ice-creams, steaming
coffee, healthy wraps, a curry or two and of course no
carnival is complete without a super sausage sizzle.
You may also like to purchase glowsticks for the carols
which will begin at 7:30pm.
As the sun sets over Aldinga Bay, set up your chairs
or picnic rug and settle in for an evening of
entertainment. Be touched by the items and join with
Coastal Views, Nov 2015

the community choir as they lead us in some wellloved carols. This year, the Aldinga Bay Community
Carols are pleased to welcome The Elliott Sisters and
Swing & Tonic who draw their inspiration from The
Andrews Sisters and other harmony groups of the
40s, 50s & 60s. You will not want to miss listening to
The Elliott Sisters distinct sound and beautiful
harmonies. The special guests for the children are The
Amazing Drumming Monkeys an adorable little
variety show aimed at 2-8 year olds, but also great
entertainment for all ages.
This year, we are also thrilled to be partnering with
Christian Care & Support Inc to assemble Christmas/
New Year hampers to give to families in need within
our local Aldinga community. So please bring along a
non-perishable food item or toiletries and leave at the
drop off point which will be located at the Aldinga Bay
Baptist Church stall. Do something small this
Christmas and together we can make a big difference!
The organising committee would like to thank all the
sponsors who have supported this community event.
In particular, they wish to acknowledge their Gold
Sponsors: The City of Onkaparinga, Aldinga Central
and Home Grain Bakery.
So, circle Sunday 13th December on your calendars
and join us this year for this community event created
with you in mind. Who doesnt enjoy the opportunity to
relax with family and friends during such a busy time
