Notepad++ or PSPad.
You cannot use any Integrated Development Environments
(IDEs), CMS, Web Frameworks, or similar tools to construct
your site. The use of any tools which construct any part of
the website for you is strictly forbidden usage of these
tools will result in a 0 grade.
Use of Dreamweaver is an automatic 0 grade.
If you are in any doubt about whether the tool you wish to
use is not acceptable, speak to your tutor BEFORE you begin
to construct your site.
Step 1: Choose a topic
The topic of your site can be any of your choosing. Pick
something you have an active interest in, a hobby, a sport
you play, a group or club you belong to, or any similar topic.
Once you have selected your topic YOU MUST CONFIRM THIS

(validators will be used to check this)

lecture) in order to fully separate your content from your

5. CSS and HTML need to be in separate files.
6. Your tutor should be able to navigate between pages.
Step 3: Alternative CSS (10%)
1. You are required to style your web site, i.e. colour scheme,
fonts, size of texts, and layout, then you are required to
produce an alternative style as discussed below. The
member of staff marking will ask you about the style you
have chosen.
2. Alternative CSS Design

b. A table of data
c. A facility to send an email comment

Note: You will be marked on the work that you submitted by
the deadline, not on work you produce after the deadline
(Week 7).
Presenting your work will allow you to discuss it with a tutor,

Task 2 Website Design and Evaluation

Submission Date: Sunday 10th 2016 (end of teaching
week 11)
Marking: In workshops during Teaching Week 12
Weight: 50%
You should by now have had the opportunity to complete (at
least the majority of) your website.
This tasks deals with reporting on four major aspects of
creating Web Interfaces; namely,
1) Web Design
2) Usability
3) Accessibility
4) Search Engine Optimisation
You are required to produce a report (4 pages maximum
font size 10 - time new roman font type) based on these four
factors which should be reflected in your website.
Specifically, you should report on:
1 Design. Using the design principles learned in the Web
Design Lecture, report on how you used these principles
to create the design of your site (e.g. important
information should be above the fold). Go through the
slides and comment on every principle that applies to
your site. If a principle is not adhered to, justify why that
decision was made.
2 Usability. Go through the usability lecture and compare
the principles found there that think about how to apply
them to your site (e.g. When you ask a person to find
something important on your site do they take a lot of
time to do so? Do they click on the wrong link therefore
making errors?) Select a user (or better yet, several users)
and create representative tasks to test the usability of
your page. Also, perform a heuristic (expert) evaluation of
the site yourself, reflecting back on the principles.
Comment on the different principles you have learned in
the lesson and what you have found from your study and
evaluation. If a principle is not adhered to, justify why that
decision was made.
7

3 Accessibility and Universal Design. Go through the

Accessibility principles presented in the accessibility
lecture and comment on every principle that applies to
your site (e.g. do you use good contrast between the
background of your text and your text? Do you include alt
text in your descriptions?). If a principle is not adhered to,
justify why that decision was made. If you used users to
test your sites usability, report on this also.
4 Search Engine Optimisation. Go through the Search
Engine Optimisation (SEO) principles presented in the SEO
lecture and comment on every principle that applies to
your site. If a principle is not adhered to, justify why that
decision was made. If you used users to test your sites
usability, report on this also.
Please structure your report well, using headings
and a title. You may also include a small introduction
should you chose to do so. If at any point you have a
question please ask, and do not leave it to the last
minute for feedback.
Each part of the four above will receive a 25% out of your
total 100% for the task. This in turn will account for 50%
of the grade for the class portfolio.
Submitting and presenting your work
The work above should be submitted via Wolf by midnight on
the due date, and demonstrated to a tutor during workshop
hours in the following week. You may be asked to explain
some of your explanations during the workshops.
Presenting your work will allow you to discuss it with a tutor,
and receive valuable feedback and a provisional grade.
Failure to present your work will result in a fail grade for
this task.
