Unit - 5
VISION FOR THE NATION
What according to Dr A.P.J., the president of India, is Indian psyche? How
can it he can prepare for empowering India?
Indians have inherited values of tolerance. Absence of killing instinct and
acceptance of every one. They obey unquestioningly. They adhere to hierarchy.
They place personal safety above adventure. Majority of educated Indians prefer
secure jobs in private or public sector. Very few want to smart small scale
industries on their own. The major flaw of unschooled minds is the lack of
discipline. Some of aged people are cynical. As a nation, we should develop the
give up cynicism. Instead of tolerating every hardship, we should develop the will
power to face problems. where should not believe in fate. Each should o
something to reduce his own problem. India will march if every individual
develops.

Yes, tell me. Tell me the story.
They say it was five hundred years ago. The Raja of kasi has an only daughter. It was
said that you could not find another to match her beauty. The Raja also wanted her to
be learned in all fields. The guru chosen for her was a great sorcerer, he knew
everything there was to know about magic , devices, strategies. And he had an eye on
the princess.
She, however, wanted to marry the prime ministers soon.
Somehow he found out about this. Who found out? That guru.
This was a mircle! Was I listening to the story she was telling my wife, or was I
reading its account in the book. I held in my hands? The book was an English one,
called Historical Documents. The story of the King of Varanasis daughter was staring
at me, in print. The last line of the page that was open in front of me was an English
translation of the words, He found out about this. My head began to spin. I broke
into a sweat. Was I going mad? I kept my eyes fixed on the open page. The print began
to dim.

Norman Nicholosns, Off To Ourter Space Tomorrow Morning is noted for its
realistic tone and effective use of refrain. The poet describes an astronauts strong
emotions at his crucial hour of depature in to the space. He is ready with his helmet for
the final moments, when count down begins for the take off. He asks his well-wishers
and the people around to take a last look and cross out his name in the telephone book.
Then he foresees his secluded life in the space, clock and calendar are of no use. The
astronaut has no intention of writing letters too the people on earth as letter
correspondence is not possible is space. He will not be all alone in the space shuttle in
solitrry confinement as complete as any gaol. Due to zero gravity, the cups will circle
around him like the plants round the sun. the cosmonaut will be ever busy with his
trans-galactic hop unmindful of the people on earth watching through television
eagerly his progressive venture in the space, a universe of one.
not change true love. It continues till the edge of doom. Shakespeare affirms that he will
write never more if this is disproved.
Doughlas Malloch, a poet and a social reformer puts forth his advice vividly to the
readers to lead a happy and contented life through his poem, Be The Best. According to
Malloch, if we cant all be captains , weve got to be crew in this World. Each one has to
play a role. Some play big roles and some play small roles. Therefore, the poet advises the
readers to be the best of whatever they are unmindful of the status. He tells that if one can
not be a pine on the top of the hill, let him be a scrub in the valley . If he is not a scrub, let
him be a bush. Even the grass in some highway can make its surrounding fresh, evergreen,
pleasant and happy. The poet says that one need not feel sorry for not being a muskie. He
may be the loveliest bass in the lake. If we cannot be a high way, we must just be a trail. If
we can not be the sun, we can not be the sun, we must joyfully be glittering by being the stars
. success and failure do not depend on the size and status in life. Therefore let us be the best
of whatever we are!

One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. Any sixty cents of it was in
pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bull dozing the grocer and
the vegetable man and the butcher until ones cheeks burned with the silent
imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied three times Della
counted it. One dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be
Christmas. There was clearly nothing left to do but flop down on the shabby
little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection
that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles, and smiles,
with sniffles predominating?
Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngsin which
they both took a mighty pride. One was Jims gold watch that had been his
fathers and his grandfathers, the other was Dellas hair. Had the Queen of
Sheeba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair
hang out of the window someday to dry just to depreciate. Her Majestys
jewels and gifts. Had King Solomon been the janitor, with all his treasures
piled up in the basement, Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he
passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy.
1. Write an essay on True love and sacrifice by developing the hints given
below.
Jim and Della ideal couple humble living life a combination of sobs
and smiles two proud possession Jims gold watch Dellas hair Dellas
Christmas gift- wishes most valuable gift sells her hair buys Platinum
chain Jim sells his watch buys combs for Della both the gifts meaningless
now - but remain a symbol of true love sacrifice being the edifice Jim and
Della wisest Magi
Made for each other: Jim and Della was an ideal couple. They led a very
humble life within an income of 20 dollars a week. They were familiar with the
philosophy that life was made up of sobs, sniffles and smiles and sniffles
predominated.
Two proud possessions: There were two possessions owned proudly by
them. One was Dellas beautiful brown hair that reached down her knee like a
brown cascade. Had Queen Sheba lived in the opposite flat, Della would have let
her hair down to invoke her jealousy. Jim had a golden watch in front of him
Dellas Christmas Gift: Della had saved only one dollar and eigfhty-seven
cents. She had dreamt of buying something worthy of Jim. As she did not have
adequate money, she sold her hair to buy Jim. a present. It was a platinum fob
chain. She bought it for21 dollars.
Jims Christmas Gift: Jim sold his watch and bought Della a set of
beautiful combs made of tortoise shell. In fact, Della had longed for such combs
without the least hope of ever wearing them.
Symbols of sacrifice: Jim was the first to recover from the state of shock.
He suggested they put aside their gifts for a while. He also made it clear that a
different hair-style would never reduce his love for Della.
The Magi: The author concludes that two foolish persons had sacrificed for
each other their most precious possessions to express their love. But they were the
wisest and they were the Magi.

Ceaseless crusader of women: Mar: 2007, 09, 1 0, June: 09, 10, Oct: 07, 09,
Gandhi believed in ahimsa and satyagrah a. He tirelessly supported womens

following of old traditions. According to him, untouchability, child marriage and

widowhood are old pr actices. They should be abolished once and for all.
Gandhi had a long life experiment with truth. He never strayed from the path of
truth.

strength weakness of womanhood. He despised to call women as weaker sex . It
was his firm belief women are mentally stronger than men. If all the women of
the world gather together, said, they would kick the atom bomb without fear.
Ahimsa means infinite love. Women can display love better than men. Women
are the true soldiers of the army of satyagraha. Women have been sent to this

Gandhi hoped that the future is with women if non-violence becomes the law of
