Miranda think about this? She wants 20. Miranda shouted from the
background that he was lying, and Marcus backed down minimally.
She probably wants one, but were gonna have 12.
They let Carolina Bride crash their wedding Dec. 19 at the Lace House
on the grounds of the Governors Mansion. Jeff Blake took beautiful
photos and made a completely unreasonable deadline. (Wedding
photographers usually take weeks to edit their photos; Jeff got these to
me the next day. See Jeffs work at www.columbiaweddingphotos.com.)
Read about one of the sweetest weddings Ive ever attended on page 11.
And our second feature is fantastic, too. If youre planning a
traditional downtown Columbia wedding, Hayden and Jeremys is
pretty much the dream a casual rehearsal party at the Lace House, a
formal candlelight ceremony at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, a reception
at the Palmetto Club. Their photos are stunning; I knew as soon as I
saw them we had to feature their wedding. Hayden planned most of the
wedding herself, and her taste is impeccable. Every detail is timeless,
Winter/spring 2016
so embarrassing, Hayden says. But its funny. You can write about it.
Oh, I did. See page 22.

Love goes
the distance
By Rebekah Lewis Hall

t James F. Byrnes
High School in
2006, football players were kings.
The Rebels have
won 11 state championships
including four consecutive
titles in 2002 through 2005.
Byrnes freshman Marcus
Lattimore had just joined the
elite team when he set his
sights on Miranda Bailey.
Miranda, then an eighthgrader, remembers their first
interaction.
They were both at McDonalds
after a football game, and
Miranda was trying to talk her
older sister, Marissa, into paying for her food.
I didnt have any money, and
Id already spent my allowance
for the week, Miranda said.
Marcus offered to pay, and
she let him. But he didnt get
my phone number until a little
later, during track season,
Miranda said.
Miranda was on the track
team, but for some reason she
doesnt remember, she wasnt
running that day. She and
Marcus talked throughout the
meet. At the end, when everyone
was leaving to go to McDonalds
again (Duncan is a small town;
theres not much to do, Miranda
explained), Marcus shouted at
her across the track, Hey, hey,
can I get your number?
He asked if she wanted to
ride with him to McDonalds,
too, but Marissa told her no.
Youre looking for trouble,
she told Miranda.
ll of Marcus and
Mirandas attendants
have known them as
long as weve known each
other, Miranda said. We all
grew up together.
Bridesmaid Brittany Lake
remembers
ninth-grader
Marcus as kind of goofy.
Nobody knew who Marcus
was until he started breaking
records, she said.
And by the time he was
breaking records, he and
Miranda were serious.
After that first year, it was

He bought the ring in March and proposed April 11 after running a football
camp at Heathwood Hall.
I figured, why not do it in front of a
bunch of young men who are going to find
their lady someday? he said.
Marcus didnt enjoy wedding planning.
(Im over it, he said a month before the
big day. Ive been over it.) But he did
enjoy planning the honeymoon to Antigua
and Barbuda.
Thats one thing I put Marcus in charge
of, Miranda said. Hes taking a Caribbean
cultures course, so hes learning all about it.

A FAMILY CONNECTION
Hayden had her bridal portraits
taken at the Governors Mansion
in a nod to her family history. Her
fathers father is Richard Riley,
who served as governor of South
Carolina from 1979 to 1987.
Her photographer, Jennifer
Stuart, included shots with her
grandparents portraits and in the
garden outside, a special project
of Haydens grandmother, the late
Ann Tunky Riley. Tunky made
over the gardens and started the garden club
during her husbands tenure as governor.
Haydens other grandmother, Sandra Owens,
remains active in the garden club.
It was so fun taking pictures and having my
mom reminisce, Hayden said. Her parents
lived in the Governors Mansion for a short
time as newlyweds in the early 1980s.
Jeremys parents hosted the rehearsal dinner at the Lace House, on the grounds of the
Governors Mansion, with Southern Way cater-
ing. By Jeremys request, the dinner was not what Hayden called a
stuffy, sit-down affair, but instead,
more of a party. They used a golf
theme for the dinner since the
wedding was the same weekend
as The Masters golf tournament.
Another connection through
Haydens grandparents resulted in
a special touch. Im not bragging,
she said. This is just so cool.
Her grandfather, who also served
as Secretary of Education under Bill Clinton, is
friends with the former president and served as
co-chairman of Hillary Clintons 2008 presidential campaign, so Hayden and Jeremy invited
them to the wedding. We didnt expect them to
come, of course, Hayden said.
The Clintons had a personal note to the
couple hand-delivered to her grandfathers
home in Greenville. The note, which Haydens
father had framed, now hangs in Hayden and
Jeremys living room.

Special to Carolina Bride
Chances are you have already written, modified, tasted (several times) and finalized the
wedding reception menu. Its perfect. This is the
starting point for the rehearsal dinner. Whatever you are serving at the wedding is off the table
(no pun intended). You want to avoid duplicating
items as not to overshadow the wedding.
