Geography[edit]
Map of the English Channel
The International Hydrographic Organization defines the limits of the English Ch
annel as follows:[3]
On the West. A line joining Isle Vierge (483823N 43413W) to Lands End (5004N 543W).
On the East. The Southwestern limit of the North Sea.
The IHO defines the southwestern limit of the North Sea as "a line joining the W
alde Lighthouse (France, 155'E) and Leathercoat Point (England, 5110'N)".[3] The W
alde Lighthouse is 6 km east of Calais (505906N 15500E), and Leathercoat Point is at t
he north end of St Margaret's Bay, Kent (511000N 12400E).
The Strait of Dover (French: Pas de Calais), at the Channel's eastern end is its
narrowest point, while its widest point lies between Lyme Bay and the Gulf of S
aint Malo near its midpoint.[1] It is relatively shallow, with an average depth
of about 120 m (390 ft) at its widest part, reducing to a depth of about 45 m (1
48 ft) between Dover and Calais. Eastwards from there the adjoining North Sea re
duces to about 26 m (85 ft) in the Broad Fourteens where it lies over the waters
hed of the former land bridge between East Anglia and the Low Countries. It reac
hes a maximum depth of 180 m (590 ft) in the submerged valley of Hurds Deep, 48
km (30 mi) west-northwest of Guernsey.[4] The eastern region along the French co
ast between Cherbourg and the mouth of the Seine river at Le Havre is frequently
referred to as the Bay of the Seine (French: Baie de Seine).[5]
Three French river mouths. Top to bottom: the Somme, the Authie and the Canche
There are several major islands in the Channel, the most notable being the Isle
of Wight off the English coast, and the Channel Islands, British Crown Dependenc
ies off the coast of France. The Isles of Scilly off the far southwest coast of
England are not generally counted as being in the Channel. The coastline, partic
ularly on the French shore, is deeply indented; several small islands close to t
he coastline, including Chausey and Mont Saint-Michel, are within French jurisdi
ction. The Cotentin Peninsula in France juts out into the Channel, whilst on the
English side there is a small parallel channel known as the Solent between the
Isle of Wight and the mainland. The Celtic Sea is to the west of the Channel.
The Channel is of geologically recent origins, having been dry land for most of
the Pleistocene period. It is thought to have been created between 450,000 and 1
80,000 years ago by two catastrophic glacial lake outburst floods caused by the
breaching of the WealdArtois anticline, a ridge that held back a large proglacial
lake in the Doggerland region, now submerged under the North Sea. The flood wou
ld have lasted for several months, releasing as much as one million cubic metres
of water per second. The cause of the breach is not known but may have been an
earthquake or the build-up of water pressure in the lake. The flood carved a lar
ge bedrock-floored valley down the length of the Channel, leaving behind streaml
ined islands and longitudinal erosional grooves characteristic of catastrophic m
egaflood events.[6][7] It destroyed the isthmus that connected Britain to contin
ental Europe, although a land bridge across the southern North Sea would have ex
isted intermittently at later times after periods of glaciation resulted in lowe
ring of sea levels.[8]
The Channel acts as a funnel that amplifies the tidal range from less than a met
re as observed at sea
the west coast of the

For the UK Shipping Forecast the Channel is divided into the following areas, fr

Name[edit]
Map with French nomenclature
The name English Channel has been widely used since the early 18th century, poss
ibly originating from the designation Engelse Kanaal in Dutch sea maps from the
16th century onwards. In modern Dutch, however, it is known as Het Kanaal (with
no reference to the word "English").[10] Later, it has also been known as the Br
itish Channel[11] or the British Sea having been called the Oceanus Britannicus
by the 2nd-century geographer Ptolemy. The same name is used on an Italian map o
f about 1450, which gives the alternative name of canalites Angliepossibly the fi
rst recorded use of the Channel designation.[12] The Anglo-Saxon texts often cal
l it S-s ("South Sea") as opposed to Nor-s ("North Sea" = Bristol Channel). The word
channel was first recorded in Middle English in the 13th century and was borowed
from Old French chanel, variant form of chenel "canal".
The French name la Manche has been in use since at least the 17th century.[2] Th
e name is usually said to refer to the Channel's sleeve (French: la manche) shap
e. However, it is sometimes claimed to derive from a Celtic word meaning channel
that is also the source of the name for the Minch in Scotland.[13]
In Spain and most Spanish-speaking countries the Channel is referred to as el Ca
nal de la Mancha. In Portuguese it is known as Canal da Mancha. This is not a tr
anslation from French: in Portuguese and Spanish, mancha means stain, while the
word for sleeve is manga which suggests either a phonetic borrowing from French
or a common source.[citation needed] Other languages also use this name, such as
