St John of Kronstadt:

St John Chrysostom
St John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople, was a notable and Divinely
Inspired Orthodox Christian Bishop and Preacher of Syria and Constantinople,
who was born in 347 and Reposed in Christ in 407.
He is famous for his profound eloquence in public speaking, his strict
denunciation of the abuse of authority in the Holy Church of Christ, and in the
Roman Empire of the time, and especially for his Divine Liturgy that is
celebrated throughout the year to this very day.
St John Chrysostom was an exceptional Ascetic and after his Repose, he was
entitled Chrysostom, (Hrisostomos in Greek) which is translated as Golden
Mouthed.
The Eastern Orthodox Church Commemorates St John Chrysostom on 13
November and on 27 January the Translation of his Holy Relics.
Together with St Basil the Great and St Gregory the Theologian, St John
Chrysostom is honoured as one of The Three Holy Hierarchs on 30 January.
During the Fourth Crusade in 1204, the Holy Relics of St John Chrysostom were
stolen from Constantinople and taken to Rome. However, on 27 November
2004, Pope John Paul II returned them to the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Although some may refer to St John as St John of Antioch that title belongs to the
Bishop of Antioch (429 441) who led a group of moderate Eastern Bishops in
the Nestorian Controversy.
St John Chrysostom was born in Antioch of noble parents. His father was a highrankind Military Officer who died soon after his birth, leaving his devout
Christian mother, St Anthousa, to nurture, guide and teach him until he
reached an age suitable for Monastic Life.
In 370 St John joyfully received Holy Baptism and was Tonsured a Reader. His
education had begun under the tutelage of a pagan named Libanios, but he
soon went on to study Theology under Diodore of Tarsos one of the leaders of
the later Antiochian School. while practising extreme Asceticism.
Seeking a deeper Spiritual Life, he became a Hermit (circa 375) until poor health
forced him to return to Antioch.
In 381 St Meletios of Antioch Ordained St John as Deacon. In 386, St John was
Ordained Presbyter by Bishop Flavian I of Antioch. This period proved to be
the happiest of his life.
Over the next twelve years, St John Chrysostom gained much popularity due to his
eloquence - most notable concerned his insightful Expositions of Holy Scripture
and his moral teachings.
His Homilies on the various Books of Holy Scripture have proven to be of great
value to all serious Disciples of Christ.
Furthermore, St John constantly urged the Virtue of Almsgiving as he was always
deeply concerned about the Spiritual and temporal needs of the poor and
destitute.
He boldly spoke against the abuse of worldly wealth, possessions and authority,
which gained him much Love and respect of the people who were able to
understand his uncomplicated explanations of the Holy Scriptures in contrast
to the Alexandrian tendency towards allegorical interpretation.

C O N S T A N T I N O P L E 27 J A N U A R Y

When we pray that our sins may be Forgiven,

we must Strengthen ourselves always by
Faith, and trust in God's Mercy, Who is ever
ready to Forgive our sins after sincere
Prayer and we should fear lest despair
falls upon our heart - that despair which
declares itself by deep despondency and
forced tears.
What are our sins in comparison to God's Mercy
- whatever they are - if only we truly Repent
of them?
Yet it often happens that when we pray, we do
not - in our heart - inwardly hope that our
sins will be forgiven, counting them as
though they were above God's Mercy.
Therefore, we certainly will not obtain Forgiveness - even should we shed
fountains of involuntary tears - and with a sorrowful, straitened heart we
will depart from our Gracious God - which is only what we then deserve!
"Believe that you receive them," says our Lord, "and you shall have them."
Not to being sure of receiving what we ask God for, is a blasphemy against
God!

When we are slandered, and therefore grow disturbed and sick at heart, it
shows that pride is in us, and that it must be wounded and driven out by
outward dishonour.
Therefore we must not be irritated by derision, and we must not bear
malice against those who hate us and slander us, but we must Love
them as our Physicians, whom God has sent us to instruct us and to
teach us Humility.
And we must pray to God for them: "Love your enemies, Bless them that
curse you."
We must say to ourselves: "It is not me that they slander, but my evil
passions; not me that they strike, but that viper which nestles in my
heart, and smarts when anybody speaks ill of it.
I will comfort myself with the thought that, perhaps, these good people
will drive it from my heart by their caustic words, and my heart will
then cease to ache."
Therefore, thank God for outward dishonour: those who endure dishonour
here will not be subjected to it in the next world: "She hath received of
the Lord's Hand double for all her sins."
"Lord, Thou wilt ordain Peace for us: for Thou also hast wrought all our
works for us."

St Gregory of Nyssa
God is Infinite and Incomprehensible - and all that
is comprehensible about Him is His Infinity and
Incomprehensibility.
But all that we can affirm concerning God does not
show forth God's NATURE, but only the qualities
of His Nature. For when we speak of Him as
Good, and Just, and Wise, and so forth, we
do not describe God's Nature but only the
Qualities of His Divine Nature.
Furthermore, there are some affirmations that we
make concerning God, which have the force of
absolute negation.
For example, when we use the term Darkness, in reference to God, we do
not mean darkness itself, but that He is not light but above light: and
when we speak of Him as Light, we mean that He is not Darkness.

CONSTANTINOPLE 27 JANU ARY

Therefore the themes of his Sermons and Homilies were eminently social and
clearly explained how as Christians Faithful Disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ
we were expected to live our daily life and develop our personal
Relationships with God and with each other.
Soon after St John had begun his Service in Antioch, the Bishop had to intervene
with Emperor Theodosios I on behalf of citizens who had gone on a riotous
rampage in which statues of the Emperor and his family were vandalised.
During the weeks of Great Lent of 387, St John Chrysostom preached 21 Sermons in
which he Entreated the people to see the error of their ways.
These had such a lasting impression on the citizens of Antioch that they caused
many pagans to convert to Christianity.
Consequently, Emperor Theodosios vengeance was not as severe as it might have
been and merely changed the legal standing of the city.
In late October in 397, St John was elected as Bishop of Constantinople, much
against his own will.
He deplored the fact that the Imperial Court Protocol would assign to him access
to privileges far greater than the highest State Officials.
He adamantly refused to host lavish entertainments, which meant that he became
very popular with the common people but was disliked by the wealthy and the
corrupt Clergy.
In a Sermon, St John commented: ... people praise the predecessor [in order] to
disparage the successor.
His reforms concerning the Clery were met with much disagreement and even
animosity especially when he instructed visiting Regional Preachers to return
to their Parish churches that they were meant to be serving and to do so
without any renumeration!
His tenure in Constantinople was constantly complicated and troubled.
The Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria, Theophilos, wanted to bring
Constantinople under his influence and had opposed St John Chrysostoms
appointment as Archbishop (Patriarch) of Constantinople, and being an
opponent of Origens teachings, he accused St John Chrysostom of being too
partial to those teachings.
Patriarch Theophilos had disciplined four Egyptian Monks known as the Tall
Brothers for their support of Origens teachings, so they had fled to
Constantinople where St John Chrysotom had welcomed them.
St John had another malicious enemy in Aelia Eudoxia, the wife of the Eastern
Emperor, Arcadios, who assumed (perhaps with justification) that his
denunciations of extravagance in feminine dress were aimed at her and her
fellow courtiers.
St John Chrysostom remained steadfastly fearless whenever he denounced
offences that occurred in high social strata, and an malevolent alliance soon
formed against him, led by Empress Eudoxia, which included Patriarch
Thophilos and various other socially significant enemies.
A Synod was held in 403 specifically to accuse St John Chrysostom of Origenism,
which resulted in his deposition and banishment.
However, Emperor Arcadios almost immediately recalled and reinstated St John
Chrysostom out of fear of a popular uprising because the citizens of
Constantinople were devoted to St John and were extremely angry about the
unjust accusations and having to suffer the loss of such a worthy Spiritual
Shepherd who genuinely cared for his Holy Flock - who dared to speak the
Truth and who tried to correct the corrupt.
There had also been a quaking in the Imperial quarters, which some though
either to have been an actual earthquake or perhaps a stillbirth or
miscarriage for the wicked Empress, which was seen as being a Divine Sign of
Gods Wrath.

3.

Nevertheless, Peace was very short-lived, for when a silver statue of Empress
Eudoxia was erected near the Great Cathedral of Agia Sophia, St John loudly
denounce the dedication ceremonies, speaking harshly against the wilful,
arrogant and self-indulgent Empress: ... again Herodias rages! Again she is
confounded! Again she demands the head of St John on a platter...! (i.e. an
allusion to the events that led to the Martyrdom of St John the Forerunner.)
Once again, influenced by the fury of his wicked wife, the Emperor deposed and
exiled St John Chrysostom to Caucasos in Georgia.
The Archbishop and Pope of Rome, Innocent I, protested against St John
Chrysostoms unreasonable deposition and banishment, but his efforts were to
no avail.
Meanwhile, St John Chrysostom continued writing letters to various influential
people in Constantinople, which caused the Emperor to send him further away
to Pityos on the eastern edge of the Black Sea.
Sadly, St John Chrysostom, who had been forced to march those long, difficult
distances on foot never reached that destination for he Reposed in Christ
during the exhausting march his final words being: Glory to God for all
things!

May his memory be Eternal!

And may St John Chrysostom ceaselessly Intercede with Christ our God for the
