FROM DAPITAN TO MANILA

JULY 31, 1896

Rizal was no longer an exile


Rizal and party left Dapitan at midnight of July on board Espaa going
northward.

STOPOVERS
August 1, Saturday Dumaguete
-

At early dawn, they anchored at Dumaguete.


In Dumaguete, Rizal visited a friend and former classmate, Herrero
Regidor, a current judge of the province
He also visited other friends, the Periquet and Rufina families.
In the afternoon he operated on a Spanish captain of the Guardia
Civil.
The Espaa left Dumaguete round 1 p.m.

August 2 Cebu

They arrived in Cebu


Was fascinated by the entrance of Cebu which he considered as
beautiful
He did two operations of strabotomy, one operation on the ears,
and another of tumor.
In the morning of Monday August 3, Rizal left Cebu going to Iloilo.

August 4 Iloilo

They landed at IloIlo


Went shopping in the city and visited the Moro

From Iloilo, Rizals ship sailed to Capiz, then to Manila via Romblon.

IN MANILA
AUGUST 6, 1896

The Espaa arrived in Manila Bay early in the morning of Thursday


Unfortunately, Rizal misses the ship Isla de Luzon going to Spain
because It had departed the previous day at 5pm.
Near midnight that day, he was transferred to Spanish cruiser
Castilla, by order of Governor General Ramon Blanco.

stayed on the cruiser for a month, from August 6 to September 2,


1896 waiting for an availability of a Spain-bound steamer

OUTBREAK OF THE PHILIPPINE REVOLUTION

August 19, 1896

The Katipunan plot to overthrow Spanish rule by means of


revolution was discovered by Fray Mariano Gil, Augustinian cura of
Tondo.
This startling incident struck terror into the hearts of the Spanish
officials and residents, producing a hysteria of vindictive retaliation
against Filipino patriots.

August 26, 1896

Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan raised the cry of revolution in


the Hills of Balintawak (Cry of Balintawak)

August 30

The revolutionist led by Bonifacio attacked San Juan, near the city of
Manila. In the afternoon after the Battle of San Juan, Governor
General Ramon Blanco proclaimed a State of war in the first eight
provinces for rising in arms against Spain
o Manila (as a province), Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna,
Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, and Tarlac.

Rizal learned about the eruption of the revolution and was worried
for two reasons:
1. The violent revolution which he sincerely believed to be premature and
would only cause much suffering.
2. It would arouse Spanish vengeance against Filipino patriots

GOING TO SPAIN
August 30, 1896

Rizal received from Gov. Gen. Blanco two letters of introduction for
the ministers of War and Colonies, with cover letter which absolved
him from all blame for the raging revolution.

September 2, 1896

The day before his departure, he wrote to his mother.


At 6pm, he was transferred to the steamer Isla de Panay which was
sailing for Barcelona, Spain

September 7 Singapore

The next day, he and other passengers went a shore for sightseeing
and shopping of souvenirs.
Rizal was urged to stay in Singapore and not continue his travel to
save his life but he refused to because he had given his word of
honor to Governor General Blanco and didnt like to break it.

For without his knowledge, Governor General Blanco was secretly


conspiring with the Minister of War and the Colonies for his arrest upon
reaching Barcelona.

Rizal Arrested Before Reaching Barcelona


September 8

The Isla de Panay, with Rizal on board, left Singapore at


1:00 p.m.

September 28
-

A day after the steamer had left Suez Canal, a passenger


told Rizal the bad news that he would be arrested by order
of Governor General Blanco and would be sent to prison in
Ceuta

September 30

At 4:00 p.m. , he was officially notified by Captain Alemany


that he should stay in his cabin until further orders from
Manila

Arrival in Barcelona as a Prisoner


September 30

About 6:25 p.m. the steamer anchored Malta.

October 3
-

At 10:00 a.m., the Isla de Panay arrived in Barcelona, with


Rizal a prisoner on board.
He was kept under heavy guard in his cabin for three days.

October 6
-

At 3:00 a.m., he was escorted to the grim and infamous prisonfortress named Monjuich.
About 2:00 p.m. , he was taken out of prison and brought to the
headquarters of General Despujol
He told Rizal that he would be shipped back to Manila on board
After the interview, Rizal was taken aboard the Colon and at 8:00
p.m. the ship left Barcelona.

Rizal was brought back to Manila for his trial.
