DI: Manifold Air Temperature (MAT)

Sensor
Introduction

DI: Pinpoint Tests

Signal Functions
The manifold air temperature (MAT) sensor is a thermistor-type sensor with a variable resistance
that changes when exposed to different temperatures. When interfaced with the powertrain
control module (PCM), it produces a 0-5 volt analog signal that will measure temperature.
A MAT sensor is used to measure intake air temperature after being cooled through the
intercooler, used to determine injection timing.

DTC Descriptions
P1118 = Manifold air temp. sensor low input
P1119 = Manifold air temp. sensor high input

DI1 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1119

DTC P1119 indicates that the MAT sensor circuit was out of range high.
Possible causes:
 open in harness
 damaged connection
 damaged MAT sensor
 damaged PCM
Disconnect MAT sensor harness connector.
Measure resistance between pin 1 (SIG RTN) on the MAT sensor harness connector and
ground.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to DI2 .

No
REPAIR open in (SIG RTN) circuit 359 (GY)
between MAT sensor harness connector
and the PCM.

DI2 INDUCE OPPOSITE FAILURE

Key on, engine off.
Jumper pin 1 to pin 2 on the MAT sensor harness connector.
Run KOEO Self Test.
Key off.

Was DTC P1118 present?

Yes
INSTALL a new MAT sensor. RESTORE
vehicle. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

No
GO to DI3 .

DI3 CHECK CONTINUITY OF SIGNAL CIRCUIT

Install breakout box; leave PCM disconnected.
Measure resistance between MAT sensor harness connector pin 2 and PCM test pin 62.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes

No
REPAIR open in MAT signal circuit.
RESTORE vehicle. CLEAR DTCs and
RETEST.

GO to DI6 .

DI4 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1118 INDUCE OPPOSITE

DTC P1119
DTC P1118 indicates that the MAT sensor circuit was out of range low.
Possible causes:
 grounded circuit in harness
 damaged MAT sensor
 damaged PCM
 damaged connection
Disconnect MAT sensor harness connector.
Run KOEO Self Test.
Is DTC P1119 present?
Yes
INSTALL a new MAT sensor. RESTORE
vehicle. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

No
GO to DI5 .

DI5 CHECK MAT SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND

Install breakout box; leave PCM disconnected.
Measure resistance between PCM test pin 62 and PCM test pins 51, 77, 91 and 103.
Is each resistance reading greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. RESTORE vehicle.
CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

No
REPAIR short to ground on MAT signal
circuit. RESTORE vehicle. CLEAR DTCs
and RETEST.

DI6 CHECK SIG RTN FOR OPEN

Measure resistance between MAT sensor harness connector pin 1 and PCM test pin 91.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. RESTORE vehicle.
CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

No
REPAIR open in SIG RTN circuit to MAT
sensor. RESTORE vehicle. CLEAR DTCs
and RETEST.

DI7 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P0096

DTC P0096 indicates that a MAT sensor range/performance fault has been detected.
P0096 is set when the vehicle has had engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor transition
from below 40C (104F) to above 80C (176F) for ten consecutive drive cycles,
without a MAT sensor signal change.
Possible causes:
 faulty MAT sensor
 faulty MAT sensor circuitry
 faulty PCM
Inspect MAT sensor circuitry at sensor and PCM. Inspect for damage, loose or pushedout pins, loose or poorly crimped wires.
Are all connectors and terminals OK?
Yes

No
REPAIR as necessary. RESTORE vehicle.
CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

GO to DI8 .

DI8 CHECK FOR MAT SENSOR FAULT CODES

Carry out KOEO On-Demand Self Test.
Are other fault codes present?
Yes
REPAIR other faults before proceeding.
RESTORE vehicle and RETEST.

No
Only P0096 present, GO to DI9 .

DI9 CHECK MAT SENSOR OPERATION

Clear continuous DTCs.
Soak vehicle at ambient temperature for at least 8 hours.
Key on, engine off.
Using scan tool, monitor MAT and EOT PIDs.
Record MAT sensor temperature reading.
Drive vehicle while monitoring MAT sensor reading.
Operate vehicle until it reaches normal operating temperature, EOT above 176F.
Idle vehicle for ten minutes.
Did MAT reading change from value recorded at any time?
Yes

No
INSTALL a new MAT sensor. RESTORE
vehicle. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

GO to DI10 .

DI10 PCM CHECK

Check continuous memory DTCs.
Is P0096 present?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. RESTORE vehicle.
CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

No
Unable to duplicate or identify concern at
this time. RESTORE vehicle.
