REFLECTION

(TEACHERS CHARACTER BUILDING)


From 27 th October until 29th October 2014, PISMP January 2013 intake
students attended organized an event; Character Building for our phase 4 Teachers
Teachers Character Building (BIG). This activity held at Kg. Felda Soeharto, Kuala
Kubu Bharu, Selangor. This event was accompanied by our lecturers and mentors
from different classes. For this time around, we had to do social service with
community in the village. There were lots of activities that had been organized such
as cleaning old folks houses, cleaning the hall and mural activity. Through this
activity, one of the main objectives that need to be fulfilled is to enhance knowledge
of the future teachers in fostering culture community and character building with
good values. Besides these objectives, this activity also has filled with seven aims to
be fulfilled by the students as the main criteria of a good teacher. Thus, this essay
encompasses the reflection of my strengths and weaknesses of the experience and
knowledge that I have learnt.
Firstly, the strength during the activity is team work and cooperation between
group members. Teamwork could be seen through during cleaning old folks houses
which had done together as a group. During cleaning and tidying the housework,
decision making and problem solving skills played an important role to overcome
the situation. This situation could be seen within a leader in a group who is an
important person to lead the other group members while completing the task given. I
believe team work in a group is really important in order to solve problems either it is
difficult or an easy task. In the meantime, cooperation between the team works could
be seen through the cleaning the old folks houses. Responsibility, team spirits and
cooperation between the group members had taken place in carrying out the tasks. I
believe teachers should have team spirits and team cooperation in handling all
matters and accountabilities. Besides that, I have found out that communication skills
or social skills plays significant role while completing the task given. Throughout this

programme, I have taught on how to socialize within community in the village and
communicate with older people by using proper language. I believe communication
skills plays important role among groups of teachers. Without socializing skills, a
person has missing one important criterion as a successful teacher in his or in her
field.
Meanwhile, the weaknesses through this activity are punctuality in
completing a task or fulfil an obligation before or at a previously designated time. For
example, some of students were late in attending activity according to plan. With this
problem, it has caused interruption in carrying out the activity in the schedule. In
order to overcome this situation, I believe teachers should instil self-management
and self-discipline on how to become more punctual in time management. Without
self-management and self-discipline, a person will not be called as a good teacher in
punctuality within teaching and learning field. In addition, I have found out that
management of committee has not done their work properly. For example,
committee of transportation has not given appropriate instruction for students to hop
on the bus according to classes or courses. When there was no appropriate
instruction given, some of students need to hustle to hop on the bus so that they will
not be left out. Through this inefficiency of work, interruption and dissatisfaction
among the students had occurred. Hence, this problem reflects me in the future that I
should perceive work as a noble task and always develop positive thinking in
teaching profession.
As a conclusion, Character Building for Teachers has taught me to become
more awareness person as an adult or as a teacher in the future. Being reflective
may lead to changes and improvement in handling difficulties. Generally, I am
satisfied with this programme despite some of the comments that highlighted my
weaknesses. This activity has developed my maturity towards becoming a
successful teacher in the forthcoming.
