who we are

Wedgwood Circle is a non-profit network of creative

industry leaders, artists, and high net worth investors
contributing together toward the cultivation of culture.
We do this through authentic connections, impressive
thought leadership, and the facilitation of capital flow for
the creation of art and entertainment that is good, true,
and beautiful for the common good.

THINKING AND LIVING THAT IS TRULY GENERATIVE MAKES POSSIBLE

WORKS AND MOVEMENTS THAT MAKE OUR CULTURE MORE HUMANE
AND WELCOMING AND THAT INSPIRE US TO BE MORE FULLY HUMAN.
MAKOTO FUJIMURA

To generate is to cause something to come about. To create, to begin, to

catalyze; these are all generative movements. Inspired by our long-time friend
and founder, Mako Fujimura, and his work in the movement of culture care,
Wedgwood Circle has themed 2016 GENERATE.
In this work, Mako has given us three principles that will guide us this year as
we seek to nurture a healthy culture around us:
Cultivate and recognize Genesis Moments. As a community we will encounter
moments that spark ideas, and acting on them will provide needed support to
rising artists and new projects. Working with the community and facilitating
action/response to Genesis Moments lead directly to the creation of art and
entertainment that is good, true and beautiful for the common good.
Embrace Generosity. Whether by investing patron or for-profit capital, or
through the sharing of relational or intellectual capital, fostering a generous
community of investors and philanthropists will generate culture, realize
long-term impact and further Kingdom growth.
Develop Generational Thinking. Perhaps the most important aspect of culture
care, the work of impacting culture does not happen overnight, nor is it easily
measured against short-term goals. Culture care unfolds over a generation.
Thinking long term and about the impact of our work today on future generations will allow us to see strategically rather than being short sighted.
This past year VISION gave us guidance for what we can do and where we
are going together. We will be unfolding some new programs this year that
were seeded in the last, and exploring new initiatives that will be realized in
the future.
You can expect 2016 to be a pivotal year for Wedgwood Circle as together,
we generate new ideas and programs, capitalize new avenues for investing
in artists and their projects, and pursue new ways of demonstrating our innovative thought leadership. We are confident that the work of this year will
GENERATE beauty, goodness, and truth next year, and for many years after.

OVERVIEW

what we do

Wedgwood focuses on the creation of art and

entertainment that is good, true, and beautiful for the
common good, in the industries of: film, music, television,
publishing, theatre, fashion, fine arts, comics/graphic
novels, computer/console gaming, and new media.
We do this in three ways:

CONNECT

CAPITALIZE

Building a community of common

cause, including investors, patrons,
sector experts and funded artists.
Sharing experiences through
concerts, live performance
gatherings, Inner Circle
Experiences, retreats, and
conferences that celebrate
the efforts we are undertaking
together.

Facilitating strategic capital

deployment through a granting
patron pool and special member
projects, as well as the Wedgwood
Culture Fund, a mechanism we
developed to focus on facilitating
deal flow and Program Related
Investment.

EDUCATE
Informing investors and donors and
the community through conference
calls, events, proprietary
sector strategies, and other
recommended readings.

why we do it

Wedgwood Circles mission rests on the understanding that ideas have

consequences, and cultural content shapes ideas. Our name is drawn
from Josiah Wedgwood, who is considered by many as one of the most
influential figures in the history Western civilization ceramics, and was
a renown innovator, scientist and businessman. He was also a supporter
of the 18th century Anti-Slavery Committee and designed a ceramic
medallion depicting a slave kneeling in chains surrounded by the
inscription, Am I not a man and a brother? Benjamin Franklin said of
Wedgwoods tokens, they may have an effect equal to that of the best
written pamphlet.
Although thousands were freely given to anyone who shared Josiahs
sentiments on slavery, thousands more were manufactured and sold.
Wedgwood showed that one could promote social change while
building a business. The Wedgwood Circle is inspired by this vision
and model of doing good while doing well through cultural engagement
and cultural artifact creation.

OVERVIEW

our impact
Since its inception in 2007, Wedgwood Circle has worked
to cultivate culture through investment opportunities,
conversations, strategic outreach, and organized over
22 conferences and gatherings in Nashville, New York,
Austin, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Dallas, Denver,
Lancaster and Los Angeles.

over 100 artists through patron and program related
investment pools.

how we invest
PATRON FUND

PITCHES

A percentage of Wedgwood Circle

member fees fund a patron pool
that supports artists through
microgrants. Since its inception in
2008, the fund has granted over
$700,000 in grants of $500$5,000 to artists and projects
that personify the good, true, and
beautiful in mainstream markets.

Wedgwood Circle investors

move capital to individual
artists, specific projects, and/or
companies. Our community made
up of sector liaisons and other
creative industry leads help curate
for-profit strategic initiatives
for investments that exemplify
significant potential for cultural
influence.

PROGRAM RELATED
INVESTMENTS

Managed through the Wedgwood

Culture Fund, Program Related
Investments (PRI) are deployments
of non-profit capital into
for-profit opportunities that
promote the mission of the nonprofit. Currently our investments
are in the areas of music, graphic
novels, television, and short film.
Returns from investments will
replenish the fund to be reinvested
in more culture-creation. Since
2009, weve moved over
$400,000 through PRI funding.

PROJECTS

Wedgwood Circle encourages

our members to explore areas
that they are passionate about,
and we make ourselves available
to support them by strategizing,
facilitating and potentially
managing new and existing
projects that fit their interests. In
addition, the Wedgwood Culture
Fund supports the work of
foundations for their projects in
the areas of culture engagement.

inner circle experiences

In 2014 Jon Batiste, artistic director-at-large for the National Jazz

Museum in Harlem and multi-instrumentalist new age jazz singer, used
a Wedgwood patron grant to create a musical instrument called the
Harmonaboard that is a hybrid of a trumpet, synthesizer, melodica, and
harmonica. Education and interactivity are two of Jons core values as
an artist, and he is always looking for new ways that music will bring
people together.
In March we will kick off our first Inner Circle Experience with a trip to
New York to visit with Jon over lunch and attend a taping of The Late
Show With Stephen Colbert, where today he is the musical director and
bandleader. Well also meet his Harmonaboard! This will be the first in
an ongoing series of experiences designed to bring members and artists
together in an intimate way, allowing both artist and patron to build
relationships, be immersed in a project, and understand motivations for
investment and giving. Inner Circle Experiences are part of our ongoing
effort to deepen our community as we grow.

STORIES

trace
It was early 2015 when I got an email from a friend saying his friend
wanted to chat with me about a music-centered grant that I had been
nominated for. In minor shock and with an immediate excitement I made
sure said friend gave my appropriate contact and shortly after, I was
talking on the phone with Amy Jones from Wedgwood. We chatted
about our mutual friends and interests and it instantly felt like I was
talking to a woman Ive known most if not all my life. Thats what the
Wedgwood Circle feels like to me: familiar and like family.
After a dinner with her and her colleague, I was able to grasp the true
heart behind Wedgwood. After the dinner, I started to feel the wave
of my musical goals become tangible. When I was officially granted
the financial assistance for my musical project, it felt as if generosity
reintroduced itself. Everyone has dreams and not everyone gets a
chance to pursue them and though I can attest nothing worth it comes
without hard work, Wedgwood is a big part in kickstarting my musical
career at a pace that feels productive, timely and truly blessed.
The last time I was with the Wedgwood family was at an artist retreat
that was held in Big Bear. I met various artists, musicians and the like
and was reminded at my time there that God is certainly creator and
creative and has truly placed me in a community who I can depend
on, trust in and gauge wisdom from. We all have specifically different
dreams, work on different genres of music but its clear we have one
thing in common; weve been certain that theres a gift weve been
given and that we should share it. So its though Wedgwood and
through the people behind it I am able to continue to walk in this
dream and make it become more and more of a reality each day.

13

With a few non-fiction titles under my belt and nearly a decade of

equipping creatives through the annual STORY conference, I decided
to make the leap into writing fiction. I had a great story for a novel but
needed a way forward. Wedgwood accepted me into the inaugural
Good Lit writers program with a funded writers retreat in Stanford,
Kentucky and grant. The time away provided not only an enriching
week with notable authors, industry experts, and fellow writers, but
also ongoing connections, feedback, and support as I finished the
manuscript. I used the grant to film a trailer for the book. A veteran
fiction editor in New York is shaping the content, and we expect
The Resident to be published in 2016.
