Statement of Purpose

I am writing to express my interest in the MSc Financial Management Programme at

Durham University. Finance has a large impact in various sectors, not only business settings.
While working at the science laboratory I noticed that there are always some problems involving
finances. For example, insufficient funds will likely delay or cancel important experiments.
Moreover, studying international politics is linked to economic problems including corruption,
bankruptcy, crisis management and other financial issues that affect everyone around the world.
The Financial Management Programme also would help my personal development and decision
making, monitoring, organizing, and controlling financial assets of countries and organizations.
These are the major reasons I want to study in the Financial Management Programme. The
business project or dissertation at Durham University is particularly fascinating to me as I want
to deepen my knowledge and gain a better understanding of finance and management. Moreover,
it is an opportunity for me to experience a different environment in England and engage with
international business companies. The Financial Management Programme could lead me to get
involved in solving financial issues as well as managing commerce for individuals, groups, and
companies.
I graduated from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas, USA with a Bachelor of
Arts in Kinesiology and Exercise Science and a minor in International Politics in August 2013. I
believe the knowledge and skills that I acquired in my vast experience in laboratory science,
sports management, student organizations, and undergraduate education will be of benefit to the
Financial Management Programme. I will have a better understanding about financial difficulties
that arise in a wide range of areas. My extensive skills as a secretary and treasurer in the
Indonesian Student Association created an excellent work ethic as I managed to organize, create

and collect funds prior to various events. Furthermore, engaging with a variety of organizations
advanced my ability to communicate and develop connections. Managing the Taiwan
Independent Project during my senior year abroad has increased my understanding of the
financial sector while researching Taiwans national assets. We showed that Taiwans economy
has grown every year from financial, trade, and investment freedoms and it could be supportive
evidence to enhance independence. In addition, while researching Taiwans economic sector I
discovered that Taiwan is one of the Four Asian Tigers; it was incredibly interesting to me as I
am from Indonesia, a Southeast Asian country. I want to improve my knowledge and get familiar
with developed countries in order to build and help my countrys economic system.
Being a full time student athlete at Wichita State University stimulated me to expand my
skills in management as I had to maintain excellent academics, sports results, and aspire to win
awards. Engaging in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee helped me to gain confidence
representing and updating information for board members. Being a team captain, I displayed
inspired dedication to the team as well as showing the spirit of college tennis. I demonstrated the
ability to motivate my team in a leadership position through communication. Traveling is the
leisure activity that leads me to have a better understanding of finance and time management as
well as planning a personal budget. Learning different languages is another hobby as I feel that
communicating in different languages could boost trade and investment because sometimes other
parties may not be able to speak English or vice versa. The interdisciplinary nature of the
Financial Management Programme will boost my skills while participating in research and
business projects. I believe the skills that I will learn in the Financial Management Programme
will benefit society as finance is a discipline that will be used in theoretical and practical settings.
