Removing and installing/replacing


microfilter housing (upper section)
Release screws .
Unfasten screws and .
Remove upper section of microfilter
housing .
Installation:
Make sure upper section of
microfilter housing is correctly
seated.

Replacement:
Release catches .
Release microfilter in direction of
arrow from upper section of housing
.
Installation:
Make sure microfilter is correctly
seated.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
Remove upper section of microfilter housing .

Release holder .
Release catches .
Remove right cover .
Installation:
Make sure right cover is correctly seated.

Left cover is removed in same way as right


cover.
Also for E90:
Release cable holder and remove hose from
cover .
Installation:
Make sure cable holder and hose are
correctly seated in opening .
Press detent lugs .
Release cable strip in direction of arrow from
lower section of microfilter housing .
Installation:
Detent lugs must not be damaged or missing.
Make sure cable strip is correctly seated.

Release bracket on left/right.


Release screw on left/right on lower section of
microfilter housing .

Feed out microfilter housing lower section in


direction of arrow and remove.
Installation:
Make sure microfilter housing lower section is
correctly seated.

Installation:
Seal of microfilter housing lower section must
not be damaged or missing.

Important!
Aluminium-magnesium materials.
No steel screws/bolts may be used
due to the threat of electrochemical
corrosion.
A magnesium crankcase requires
aluminium screws/bolts exclusively.
Aluminium screws/bolts must be
replaced each time they are released
.
The end faces of aluminium
screws/bolts are painted blue for the
purposes of reliable identification.
Jointing torque and angle of rotation
must be observed without fail (risk of
damage) .
Release screws (1 and 3).
If necessary, release oil cap in
direction of arrow.
Lift off acoustic cover

Installation:
Make sure intake filter housing is correctly seated in relation to intake duct and bearing pins.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
Read out fault memory of DME
control unit
Switch off ignition
Only when replacing housing:
Remove air-mass flow sensor
Unlock plug (1) and remove.
Release clamp and detach air intake
hose.
Detach intake filter housing from
bearing pins of rubber mounts and
from air intake hose and remove.

Note:
Check stored fault messages.
Now clear the fault memory.

Special tools required:
00 9 120

Important!
Driving without the tension strut is not permitted.
(Risk of damage to the body).
Tension strut screws must be tightened to torque
and then tightened down with special tool 00 9
120 .
Important!
Catch and seal of cover must not be
damaged.
Even a minimally damaged cover may result in
water leaking in; if necessary, replace cover .
Note:
Two possible versions of cover :
A) Turn cover (with notch) approx. 45
counterclockwise
B) Snap out cover (without notch) in upward
direction
Remove cover and release screw underneath.
Release screw .
Grip grommet and pull out tension strut in
direction of arrow.
Note:
Grommet must not be pulled out of bulkhead
because this eliminates the possibility of correct
feeding in when installed.

Installation:

Replace screws.
Carefully feed tension strut into grommet .
Tighten down screws to specified torque and then
retighten to angle of rotation using special tool 00
9 120 .
Tightening torque 51 71 2AZ .

Necessary preliminary tasks:
Remove tension strut .
Remove suction filter housing .
Remove engine cover .
Open holder (2).
Disconnect plug connection (1) under
manifold.
Release both crankcase breathers
.

Disconnect plug connection .


Disconnect plug connection .
Release screws .
Detach engine wiring harness from
manifold and lay to one side.

Disconnect plug connection (1) on oil


pressure switch.

Release fuel rail and lay to one


side.
Note:
Do not detach fuel line.
Release screw .
Unscrew nuts (3).
Tightening torque: 11 61 1AZ .

Raise intake manifold approx. 10 cm.


Disconnect plug connection at
bottom.
Release tank vent line behind throttle
valve assembly.

Installation:
Replace all seals.
Assemble engine.

Important!

Switch off ignition
Disconnect battery
Remove intake air manifold
Unlock plug (1) and remove.
Unfasten nut.
Tightening torque 12 41 3AZ .
Remove battery positive lead .

Release screw .
Installation:
Replace aluminium screws.
Tightening torque 12 41 1AZ .
Unfasten screws (2).
Installation:
Replace aluminium screws.
Tightening torque 12 41 2AZ .
Remove starter motor .

Installation:
Check starter pinion and ring gear for
damage, replace starter motor if
necessary.
