Demonstrate wide, critical and well grounded knowledge on social and cultural
movements in Spain from the beginning of 20 th century until our days.
Analyze cultural productions according to their context: how they are the product of
society and politics.
Apply acquired knowledge to the cultural analysis of cinematographic, literary and
musical works and TV programs and comics.
Debate on topics related to Spanish present in a well grounded way and be able to
reach their own conclusions on these topics.
Understand the context and precedents of contemporary pieces of news in Spanish
newspapers.
Course Methodology:
This course will combine lectures with practical sessions of analysis literary texts, films, songs,
TV programmes and comics related to the historical time which is being studied. Students will
have to read primary works and critical bibliography suggested by the professor. In turns they
will have to present introductions to the topics which will be studied in the class. Every three
weeks there will be an online text with feedback on where to find their answers. These tests
will not count towards the final mark, they will be formative assessment and not summative
assessment, but at least 50% of the final exam questions will come from these tests.
We will try to attend at least one cultural event related to Spanish culture to be commented in
the class.
Assessment:

Report on one of the topics approached in the course with supporting bibliographical
research on it. ONE WEEK AFTER HAVING FINISHED THE TOPIC IN CLASS 15%. The
topics will be:
o Los aos 20 y 30 en Espaa (Deadline: Feb 4)
o La guerra civil espaola (Deadline: Feb 23)
o El franquismo (Deadline: March 8)
o Modernizacin en Espaa y oposicin al franquismo (Deadline: March 29)
o La Transicin (Deadline April 14)
o Aos 80 y 90: la formacin de una nueva identidad (Deadline: May 3)
o Poltica y sociedad en el cambio de siglo: de 1996 a 2016 (Deadline: May 24)
10 minute presentation on a topic on contemporary Spain agreed in advance with the
professor, well supported with bibliography 15% (May 17)
Analytic work on a literary text, a film, a picture, a comic or a tv programme in relation
to its context. 25% (April 5)
Participation in the round table and in the class: 15%
Final exam: 30% (Exam period in May)
Attendance is compulsory. An 80% of attendance is a requirement to be given a final
mark.

Articles and book chapters will be provided and suggested on a weekly basis either in the
class or on the website of the course. Due to the diversity of topics approached and how
contemporary they are, there will be no textbook. Frequent reading of Spanish newspapers is

Compulsory films and TV programs:
Students will have the chance of watching the films and TV programs in a scheduled
screening after the classes 1 or 2 times per month. If they are not able to attend the
screening, they will have to watch the films in their own time before the following class, in
which the screening will be commented.
