DESIGN INSPIRATION:

THE HAVEN: A PROPOSED

Maynilad Plant
The over-all form of the proposed Garden is a Maynilad
plant representing the city of Manila. It consists of 5
leaves that represent the 5 senses.
Sight- in this area, people are to be amazed of the
beautiful sight of the Garden. For them to further
appreciate the garden, gazebos were put as well as
benches.
Hearing- in this area, the designers put waterfall
features to give relaxing sounds to the users. Also,
birdhouses were also put so that the users will also hear
the chirping of the birds, which will also give relaxing
feeling to the users/
Smell-fragrant flowers and plants were put so that the
smelling sense of the users will be satisfied.
Touch- in this area, tree houses were made for the kids
to enjoy their stay in the garden. The satisfaction of their
sense of touch will be acquired through their
playfulness. Also, plants with different texture were also
put.
Taste-In this area, the sense of taste will be satisfied by
the delicious food the proposed kiosk will serve.
Preferably, Filipino foods and snacks shall be served.

Orientation: The orientation to sun wind and views were

determined and considered by the Designers because
this influences the proper location of the structures and
plants.
Structures: The Designers focal point is the
Greenhouse that will remind the people that Mehan
Garden used to be a botanical Garden. This
Greenhouse houses not only plants with name plates
but also historical facts about the garden.

Kiosks: KIosks were also put for the

local and foreign tourists to
quench their thirst and hunger.
Kiosk were also put so that the
Garden will somehow generate
income for the city of Manila and
for the maintenance of the
Garden.

REDEVELOPMENT OF THE MEHAN

GARDEN
Style: Since the designers want to bring the
Manilenos closer to nature, the designers chose
the Art Noveau style because of its natural
forms, but the style is also:
Utilitarian(according to function)
Freeform(According to forms)
Anythings goes (Avante Garde, According to
moods and feelings)

Comfort rooms: Comfort rooms were

put for the users.
Utilities:Water connections, drainage,
electrical connections were also
considered

Admin Ofiice

GreenHouse: Houses the different

types of plants found in the
country.

Paths and Pavements: The use of carabao grass

as grass covers are cheap alternative for lawn
covers, on the other hand, the pavement used in
the proposed garden is the pervious pavement
that absorbs water. Both of these techniques are
made to avoid flood in the Garden.

Trees: Old trees are maintained while

the young trees will be relocated
through the Tree Balling technique.

Plants and Trees used: It is suggested that to avoid

the vagabonds and informal settlers, the people
who live in the existing garden will be the one to
maintain it provided that the local government will
pay them and they will not live there anymore

Bike Lanes: Not only pedestrian access,

but also bike access is also proposed in
the garden.

Archway:Has Greeneries on its

roofs and plant boxes on its sides
to give off that natural outoor
feeling.

Bench and Lamposts:Bench and

lampposts that coheres to the chosen
style were also put.

Water Features: Water features were put

for aesthetic and relaxing features.

Lines and Shapes: The Gardens form is based on lines and shapes. Straight lines were used for they are direct, precise, strong, and rigid.Vertical lines were
employed in buildings, fences and furniture pieces. Horizontal lines symbolizing the tranquilty of the horizon are exemplified in benches. The diagonal lines, on
the other hand, creates a dramatic effect. On the other hand, curvilinear lines are soft, fluid and graceful, they were found most where playfulness and
freedom is desired such in pathways, planting arrangements, playgrounds, water feature.
