1. A trapezoidal channel ,which has bottom width B=2.0m, side slopes 1:2,a
bottom Slope So=0.0012 and n= 0.025,carries a discharge q of 233 m 3/s.
Compute the water surface profile created by a dam, which increases the
water to a depth y of 5m. The upstream end of the profile is assumed to be at
depth equal to 1% greater than normal depth.
2. At certain section in a very smooth, 1.8m wide rectangular channel the depth
is 0.90m and the flow rate Q is 4.3m3/s, S o = 0.002, n= 0.012 and = 1.1.
Compute the distance to section where the depth y is 0.96m.
3. Given is a wide channel with q= 2 m 3/sm and a Chezy-coefficient of 55m 2/s
the bottom slope of So= 1:100 changes suddenly to slope of S o= 1: 225. Find
the distance from the change of slope to where the depth is 95% of the new
uniform depth.
4. A 6m wide rectangular channel has a bottom slope, S o of 0.005 and conveys
discharge Q of 28 m3/s (n = 0.013). At the beginning of the canal the water
depth is critical. Determine the distance from the inlet of the canal to the
depth 1%> Yn (1.028).
5. At a certain section in a very smooth 1.80 m wide rectangular channel the
depth is 0.90m and the flow rate Q is 4.32m 3/s So = 0.002,n=0.012(Manning)
and =1 compute the distance to the section where the depth y is 0.96m.
6. A trapezoidal concrete- lined canal has a constant bed S o of 0.0015, a bed
width Bo of 3 m and side slopes (m) of 1:1. A control gate in the canal
increases the depth immediately upstream of the gate to 4.0m. The discharge
Q is 19.0m3/s.Take n=0.017 and =1.1 and compute the water surface profile
depth 5% greater than the uniform flow depth. Using the Manning equation
the uniform flow depth (yn) is 1.75m. The critical depth yc is 1.35m.
7. A vertical sluice gate is situated in a rectangular channel with a bed slope S o
of respectively 0.005 and 0.0025, n=0.015. The width of the gate and the
canal is 4.0m, and the gate has a vertical opening of 1m with Cc =0.60.Take
= 1.1 and determine the location of the hydraulic jump for a discharge of
20m3/s and a downstream water depth of 2.0m.
8. Determine the water profile between two points A and D in a 3 m wide, depth
is critical .At point A the water depth is normal [y n=3m] and at D the water
depth is critical(yc=1.3m).The discharge is 15m 3/s and the bed slope S o is
0.0004 [n=0.0012 and =1]. The critical slope Sc is 0.003; the bottom slope
for this discharge is mild [M]. Calculate the location where the water depth is
3m, 2.75m. 2.5m 2.225m, 2.0m, 1.75m and 1.634m.
9. A 30m wide channel conveys a discharge q of 60m 3/s.m. The chezy
coefficient C is 55 m2/s and the upstream bottom S o of 1:100 changes
suddenly to a slope of 1:225. Find the distance from the change of slope to
where the depth is 95% of the new uniform depth. The critical depth for both
sections is Yc= 0.74m. The normal water depth in the upstream section (S 0
=1:100) is 0.15m and the normal water depth in the downstream part (S 0
=1/22) is 0.67m.
10. A rectangular channel has a bottom width B 0=2m and a discharge Q =4m 3/s,
the chezy coefficient C is 50m2/s and the bottom slope S0= 1:500. The
channel changes smoothly to a downstream width B 1=2.5m. Assume for the
computations g = 9.81 and alpha () =1. Find the distance from the change of

width to where the depth differs 1% from the uniform flow depth. The bottom
slope for both canal sections is S 0=0.002. The critical and normal water

upstream of this second weir?
15. A rectangular channel 2.0 m wide has its depth backed-up to a height of 1.2m
by a sharp-edged sluice gate. If the gate opening is 0.30m and the
downstream flow is free, estimate the discharge through the gate and the
force on the gate.
16. Show that in a control section where critical depth occurs in a frictionless
lateral spillway channel
(S02. gAc.Tc)/(4B2q2)=1.0.
17. A side spillway channel is 100m long and is rectangular in cross-section with
B=5.0m, n= 0.020, B=1.30 and S o=0.15. If the lateral inflow rate is
1.75m3/s/m,find the critical depth and its location.
18. A rectangular channel 3.0m wide can carry a discharge of 3.60m 3/s a normal
depth of 1.2m. Design a side weir so that it will pass a the flow in the canal
when the discharge is 2.00m 3/s and will divert 0.6m3/s when canal discharges
3.6m3/s.
19. A rectangular canal of 2.0m width carries a flow with a velocity of 8.75 m/s
and depth of 1.25m. A side weir of height 0.75m and length 1.20m is provided
in one of its walls. Find the quantity of flow diverted by side weir.
