COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to develop the understanding basic laws of thermodynamics and apply
these to analyse the engineering problems. It is followed by an introduction about open and
close systems and heat and work interactions. Based on these concepts, First and Second laws
of thermodynamics, reversible and irreversible processes are taught to the students. The students
are made familiar with the derived thermodynamic properties such as enthalpy, entropy their
relations with other thermodynamic properties.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The course starts with introduction basic laws of thermodynamics and their applications in
engineering problems. Students learn the basic concepts of entropy, enthalpy, reversible and
irreversible processes and their properties and properties of pure substances. They will learn to
analyse a thermodynamic problem. By studying this course, the students will acquire the basic
knowledge and understanding of key principles in the areas of thermodynamics. These concepts
will help students in better understanding of reversible and irreversible processes. They will
learn about the inter conversion of heat and work energies. Using this knowledge, students can
understand the working principles of power cycles, heat pumps and refrigeration cycle
