RETURN TO CEBU

My six months of furlough are rap

idly drawing to a close. The month
of March is, effectively, the end
of my third furlough since becom
ing a missionary. It has been good
to be here - but I am eager to re
turn and get back to my work in
Cebu, Philippines.
On April 16 I will fly SeattleTokyo on Thai TG 741, leaving SeaTac at 1:50 PM.

In Tokyo, I will be met by Bill

and Betty Turner and will be with
them and preach for the congrega
tion they are "sitting" while Mark
and Lynn Pratt are on furlough.
An "extra" in Tokyo will be a vis
it with Taka, my Christian ham
radio friend.

Turners and I will drive to Osaka,

where we will join Martin and
Evelyn Clark and brethren in cele
brating 50 years of Osaka Bible
Seminary on Apri1 21.

On April 23, I will fly Osaka-Man

ila, where I will be met by Dennis
McKinney. We will go to the 78th
National Convention of the Churches

of Christ in the Philippines

Pila, Laguna, April 24-26.

in

April 26 I will fly on to Cebu, in

plenty of time to begin teaching

in June.

RETURN TO CEBU -

IN JAPAN

After 6 months of furlough, mostly

spent with West Seattle Christian
Church, time came for me to return

to work in Cebu, Philippines.

My
return trip began with a flight
from Seattle to Tokyo on Apr. 16-17.
I was met at the Tokyo/Narita Air
port by Bill Turner, beginning sevs-ral days of good fellowship with
him and his wife, Betty,
I

preached for

Church

the Machida City

of Christ,

where Bill

and

Betty minister. An added blessing

to me was meeting my Christian ham
radio

friend,

Takashi

Hirasaki,

("Taka," JSICFQ), and then having

him translate my message about the
resurrection of our Lord.

Turners and I drove to Osaka, where

we joined Martin and Evelyn Clark

and other missionaries plus many
Japanese brethren in remembering
Harold Cole's beginning classes in
Osaka Bible Seminary exactly 50
years before, on April 21, 1937.
It was a grand occasion.
I spoke to OBS Chapel, translated
by Seimin Sugiyama-san, a fellow
student with me at the "other" CBS.

I enjoyed renewing acquaintances

in Japan, some whom I had not seen

since the

Traveling

College

was

there in 1973.

RETURN TO CEBU -

AT CONVENTION

On 23 April I flew from Osaka,

Japan,
to Manila,
Philippines,
where I was met by Dennis McKinney
and Mike and Liz Carman. Next day
we drove to Pi la, Laguna, to attend
the 78th National Convention of the

Churches of Christ in the Philip

pines , 24-26 Apri1.
It was a good convention.
mates

of

attendance

were

Esti
in

the

2000-3000 range. Convention speak

ers and workshop leaders included
both Filipino and non-Filipino, in
cluding missionaries and visitors
from America and Australia.
At
each main session there was a mes

sage in one of the Philippine dia

lects .

For me, it was good to see my CBS

quartet kids do a good job at sing
ing 3 songs as a double quartet.
Fellowship was a big part of this
convention, as

it is at the NACC.

I met many friends from all over

the Philippines.
I am glad I was
there.

Now, I must get to work at prepar

ing to teach in Cebu Bible Seminary
beginning 8 June,
We anticipate
an increased enrollment, perhaps
as many as 70. It will be good to
again be in class with these fine
Filipino young people. With love,
Walt Prevost

P.S. While at "McKinney Hotel" in

Manila, I met Chris McKinney.
I
hope to become better acquainted
with him as we have opportunities
to be together.

WSCC & FEEDING PROGRAHS

A recent "Did You Know" item in "The Friend

ly Visitor" reported the giving of the Vs

and 5's and the Middler/junior Department
toward the feeding

programs

here.

That

caused me to realize that a more complete

report of WSCC's giving to feeding programs
should be given.

The children of WSCC have been giving regu

larly to the Feeding Program since January
1985. Earlier It was Junior Church; lately
it has been the Vs and 5's

and

the Mid-

dlers/Juniors. These children's offerings

have totaled $^9-96. This is an example
of children helping children.
In addition, there are adult members of
WSCC who also regularly give to the feeding
progratJS.
All of these funds are being
given here to the Harvesters' Mission, one
of several such groups which regularly have
feedings.
The total WSCC giving for the
feeding programs during 1\ years has sur
passed $1500, or about $50 per month. These
funds are being used to help the children
physically and, indirectly, to lead them
and their parents to Christ.

Often, when I have given the money to the

Feeding Program workers, the response has
been, "Thank you, Lord!" I add my thanks
to the Lord, and to the children and others
of WSCC who continue to give generously to
this worthy work for Christ.
With love,
Walt Prevost

Alvin Ray Carlson

Sept. 15, 1914 - Aug. 31, 1987

Alvin Ray Carlson, veteran mission
ary in Cebu, Philippines, died on

August 31, 1987, in Cebu City at

the age of 72. Intending to go to
Tibet, Ray & Imogene Carlson set
tled in Cebu in early 1941 to await
more stable political conditions
in Tibet.

The Cebu

locations be

came permanent as they established

Cebu Christian Mission in 1941,
survived the Japanese occupation
of the Philippines during World
War

II,

and

founded

Cebu

Bible

Seminary in 1947.
Both Ray and
Imogene are graduates of Cincinnati
Bible Seminary. To a large degree,
the Churches of Christ in the Vis-

ayan Region of the Philippines re

sult from the work of the Carlsons.

Perhaps the greatest legacy of Ray

Carlson's 46 years in Cebu is Cebu
Bible Seminary, presently enjoying
its largest enrollment ever at 72.
Survivors include his widow, Imo
gene; sister, Corrine Hovda; sons,

Mark Robin, Larry, and Ted; seven

grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

I consider it an honor and a bless

ing to be a co-worker of the Carl

sons here in Cebu.

Will you pray

with me that the work Carlsons have

accomplished

here

will

continue

and that there will be many more

fruit resulting from their labors?

ABOUT ARNOLD

One of my students

in Cebu Bible

Seminary is Arnulfo Amamangpang

(Ahr-NOHL-foh Ah-mah-MAHNG-pahng he likes to be called "Arnold).
When I arrived 3 years ago, he was
hardly more than a boy, 17, and in

his first semester of study. Now,

he is a fine young man of 20 and
is in his final semester of study
with us in CBS.

He has shown him

self to be blessed with the gift

of evangelism, the ability to talk
personally with others about their
need

for

the

Lord

Jesus

Christ.

He personally led to Christ and

baptized his mother, two sisters,

and a brother.

He is presently

ministering with the congregation

at Balud, about 15 miles south of

the CBS campus.

During the last couple of years,

Arnold has had more than his share

of tragedy.

He is the eldest of

10 children.
Two of
sisters became sick

his
and

little
died.

Then, his mother died giving birth

to her 10th child.

Now, Arnold's

father has abandoned the family!

As

the

eldest,

Arnold

feels

the

desire and responsibility to take

care of his siblings. The children
are "farmed out" with relatives.
Arnold's desire is to re-establish

his family by providing a home

where all 8 of them can

live to

gether.

Memorial Field House

Talisay, Cebu, PHILIPPINES-The board

of trustees of Cebu Bible Seminary has

authorized the raising of funds for a
multi-purpose building to be ca.lled the
Alvin Ray Carlson Memorial Field
House. Brother Carlson, missionary in
the Philippines for more than forty-six
years, had commissioned an architect to
prepare construction drawings for a
multi-purpose building just before he
died.

The construction drawings have been

completed, and the projected cost of the
building, including a 21,500-square-foot
piece of property adjacent to the campus
of Cebu Bible Seminary will be approxi
mately $70,000.
This field house will enable students of

Cebu Bible Seminary to play basketball

and other sports during inclement
weather, but it will also be a "convention

center" for larger brotherhood events

such as the annual Visayan Convention
of Churches of Christ and the Youth
