STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

In my undergraduate career I have majored in mathematical sciences and engineering studies, but
I intend to further my educational background by obtaining a Master of Science in Engineering. This
decision results from my fascination with applied mathematics, analysis, and problem solving. My goals
in graduate school are to acquire knowledge in general research areas such as machine design and
manufacturing as well as perhaps exploring more specific areas such as distributed energy management.
I have completed several research projects using applied mathematics. These projects have stimulated a
deeper interest in engineering, taught me valuable study and thinking skills, and given me the necessary
experience for pursuing the path of higher education.
My research project that was conducted in the fall of 2009 investigated the effect of dorsiflexion
of the ankle on the walk-run transition. To examine how muscle tension affects range of motion, Google
Sketchup, a 3D computer software tool, was used to create a blueprint of a lower leg model. This model
was then constructed, and a force sensor allowed observation of the effects of leg position on muscle
tension. This research taught me how to use the scientific approach with these types of projects, and it
enabled me to use my kinesthetic abilities while sparking further interest in the realm of engineering.
In a lecture I held on The Trigonometry of Crankshafts, various mathematical methods such as
the graphical method, the law of sines, and the complex numbers method were used to calculate the
angle between the connecting rod and ground link as well as the slider position. Seeing how
mathematics can expand ones understanding of technical processes, I gradually became enthusiastic
about the science of engineering and all its intricate dimensions. For another presentation, the
mathematical methods of two famous women mathematiciansSophie Germain and Emmy Noether
were examined. I concentrated on their research concerning number theory, abstract algebra, and
Noetherian rings. It can be easily discerned that not only do I possess higher-order mathematical
abilities, but that I actually aspire to develop hands-on projects. Thus, a M.S. degree in engineering is
critical to achieve a successful engineering career.
These research experiences have caused me to significantly improve my critical thinking skills as
well as develop discipline for my studies. I never settle for completing my tasks on the mediocre level; I
always strive for the most productive outcome. My research has greatly enhanced my time management
skills and ability to engage in multiple research projects simultaneously, thus empowering me to hold a
job in industry already.

Over the past summer, I worked as an office assistant to an electrical engineer who owns a
consulting and contracting company. My responsibilities included helping with website development,
company communications, and portfolio development. This experience permitted me to observe the
interior processes that occur within an engineering company. Additionally, my job as a mathematics and
writing tutor has allowed me to advance my instructional, problem solving, and collaborative skills by
requiring me to break down concepts into smaller parts, helping others to critically explore subject
matter, and combining ideas to produce desired outcomes, potentially preparing me for a teaching
position in graduate school.
I chose the University of North Carolina at Charlotte because it offers a degree for general
engineering, which would allow me to broaden my knowledge in multiple branches of engineering.
Additionally, UNCC offers a variety of research opportunities as well as a diversity of educational
backgrounds among its professors. In particular, I am interested in Dr. Srivastavas research in
distributed energy management, related to the application of hybrid vehicles. Dr. Cuttinos research in
precision engineering also interests me. Acquiring knowledge in these research fields would enable me
to pursue a career in practical applications of engineering such as the design of more efficient energy
systems.
Having acquired the perseverance and focus needed to work on an advanced degree, I am
hopeful that my academic credentials are good enough to direct me towards my interest in engineering
science. Overall, I am completely open to assimilating various engineering interests into my own future
research, and I am confident that UNCC has the breadth of learning that I seek.
