Frequently Asked Questions Vietnam Airlines

CHOOSING AN AGENCY
What are the advantages
of contracting through
Rishworth Aviation?

We are one of the fastest growing Crew Leasing

agencies in the world and we are the largest in Asia.
We have over 11 years experience in Vietnam, providing a
great number of flight crew to Vietnam Airlines and also
JetStar Pacific Airlines, supported by a very experienced
Pilot Support Group based in Vietnam. Our Auckland and
Asia based teams also visit Vietnam frequently to discuss
and review contract and market issues in person with you
and the Airline.
We understand how difficult it can be to adjust to a new
country, language, culture and working style. Its often the
little things that make the difference from advising you
on the easiest way to get to and from your base airport,
hints and tips on working with a foreign crew, to helping
you settle your family in a new and exciting location. So,
no matter where you are, were here for you, and our
experienced support team can be called on 24/7 to assist
you with anything at all throughout your time on contract
with us.

Our in country representation can provide real time in

country support. We believe we offer you the best support
in Vietnam that no other agency can match. We have an
established Pilot Support Group in Vietnam including 2
senior VNA pilots who are there to assist you from the
moment you arrive in Vietnam to when you complete your
contract. We also have the services of a Vietnamese
agent who is available by phone, email and skype to assist
with pilot queries. You have the support of a friendly,
professional team whose focus is to ensure your
contracting experience is successful.
Can I apply for the same
contract/position through
other agencies?

No. Once you have applied for a position with Vietnam

Airlines through an agency, you cannot apply for the same
position at the same time through another agency.
Vietnam Airlines frowns upon pilots changing agencies, or
applying through multiple agencies, so it is important that
you know which agency you wish to be represented by.

CONTRACT TERMS
Is the monthly payment
amount before or after
tax?

The Airline is responsible for payment of tax in Vietnam so

the amount you are paid is net of taxes. Tax certificates are
not provided, and we advise you to seek advice from your
tax professional as to any tax liabilities you may have in
your home country prior to attending a screening.

What is the security

bond requirement?

Once you have completed the 13 day Ground School

course with Vietnam Airlines you will be paid a daily amount
for the duration of the line training period up to a maximum
of 30 days (Rate 1).
Upon the successful completion of line training you will start
to be paid the applicable fee amount for the first 12 months
of your contract term (Rate 2). From the first day that you
are paid at this rate, RAL is required to make deductions to
a maximum of 30% of the full monthly fee payment (prorated for any part month payment) until 90% of your monthly
service fee has been collected.
These funds will be held by RAL as a security bond to cover
any penalty costs that may arise for early termination of the
contract. The security bond will be returned to you at the
successful completion of the full contract term if no further
contract is mutually agreed and entered into. See below for
further information about penalty amounts.

When will I be paid?

You will be paid on the 10th day of every month for the
preceding month (you should allow up to 48 hours for the
payment to reach your bank account). We can arrange to
split your payment between different bank accounts (a fee
of USD25.00 will apply if you split your fee payment to a
2nd and subsequent accounts).

At what point does

overtime apply?

For ATR72 pilots, overtime can be claimed if you work over

160 block hours per two consecutive months at a rate of
1/80 of the monthly fee for each hour worked. However,
ATR72 pilots are currently only flying around 50 hours per
month so no overtime is required. There is no overtime
payable for all other fleets and generally flying hours are
around 75 hours per month.

How much are the per

diems?

There is no separate per diem payment. The per diems are

included in your total monthly fee payment as set out in the
briefing document.

What is the notice period

if I wish to end my
contract?

If you leave Vietnam Airlines at any time before the end of

your contract period, then you are required to give 62 days
notice and pay the following early termination costs:
(a) 90% of your currently monthly fee payment if you
leave prior to the completion of 12 months service;
(b) 60% of your current monthly fee payment if you leave
after 12 months service but before the completion of
24 months service;
(c) 30% of your current monthly fee payment if you leave
after 24 months service but before the completion of
36 months service;
If you leave at any time during the term of the contract,
without providing the 62 days notice required, the early
termination cost is 120% of your current monthly fee
payment.

What is the retirement

age?

The current retirement age for men is 60 years and 55 years

for women.

Are there any retirement

benefits?

As with most contracting positions, there are no retirement

benefits/superannuation plans involved.

Can I keep my home licence

current?

You operate on a Vietnamese licence and Vietnam Airlines

will take care of the arrangements to keep this licence
current.
Keeping your home licence current is your
responsibility.

ROSTERS
How long in advance are
rosters issued?

Generally rosters are issued between 2 and 4 weeks in

advance depending on the Fleet.

Are rosters stable?

They can be subject to changes, particularly on the A320

fleet. There are also seasonal demands where rosters can
be busier than usual such as during the very busy
Vietnamese New Year period (TET) in February.

Is there any annual leave?

No separate annual leave is provided. Days off are included

in the monthly roster pattern as above.

How many days off do I get

during my 6 weeks on duty?

This may vary between fleets but generally pilots get 1-2
days off per week.

Does Vietnam Airlines allow

pilots to submit a request for
particular days off each
month?

Pilots may submit requests for particular days off, and

where possible, Vietnam Airlines will accommodate
this. However, we would suggest that Vietnam Airlines
would not be able to grant requests for certain days off if the
requests were made on a regular basis.

COMMUTING
Will I be given travel home for
my days off?

You will be provided with a return economy class ticket on

the Vietnam Airlines network for each off duty period
(upgrade to business class on space available basis). US
based pilots should be aware that Vietnam Airlines
currently does not operate to America, so you would
need to fly on Vietnam Airlines network to Paris,
Frankfurt, Japan, Korea or Taiwan (or somewhere else
on the VNA network) and arrange your own flight to the
US from there, or you would need to pay for your own
flight for each days off period.

Is ID travel available?

ID travel is available on the Vietnam Airlines network for

pilot, parents, spouse and children, however, travel via this
method is best made when you are flexible as to dates. If
you have fixed dates that you must travel then we
recommend you consider alternative arrangements. Please
note that the cost is exclusive of taxes and you are required
to pay for tax. There are no interline travel benefits available
to pilots at Vietnam Airlines.
Vietnam Airlines has recently become a member of the
SkyTeam Alliance and it is anticipated that benefits will
accrue under this membership in due course. Please refer
to
www.vietnamair.com.vn/wps/portal/en/site/flight_info/route_
map for details on the Vietnam Airlines network.

Is accommodation provided?

Vietnam Airlines provides accommodation at layover stations

other than base residence (Ho Chi Minh City/Hanoi). The
standard is generally very good, however one or two
locations have average standard hotel facilities.

Can I bring my wife/family?

Many pilots at Vietnam Airlines have their families living with

them. For pilots on the A320 you should be aware that you
may end up on overnight away from base around 3 times
each week (or more during busy periods) so you wont
always be home with your family.
Family members can reside with you in Vietnam and we can
assist with visa arrangements for them. Depending on the
passport held, visas currently cost around USD50, are
issued for a 3 month term and renewable in country for a
further 3 months. Family members are required to leave and
re-enter Vietnam to get a new visa every 6 months.

What are the options for

educating my children in
Vietnam?

Pilots feedback to us is that the standard of education at the

international schools is good, but they are expensive
(approximately USD800-1000 per month per child). There
are several schools to choose from International, British
International, French and American.

UPGRADES
/CONVERSIONS
Will there be an
opportunity for me to
upgrade/convert to
another aircraft at
Vietnam Airlines?

Please note that there is no guarantee that if you join

Vietnam Airlines (VNA) you will be accepted for an
upgrade/conversion. This is entirely at the discretion of
VNA, subject to RAL approval and is dealt with on a case by
case basis. You should therefore only progress your
application to VNA on the basis that you could remain in the
same position for the period of the contract.
In the past VNA have approved upgrades/conversions for
A320 FOs to Captains, B777 FOs to A320 Captains and
ATR72 Captains to A320 Captains. VNA are currently in the
process of allowing some A320 pilots to convert to the
A330. There are also upgrades possible to TRI or TRE on
some fleets.

TRAINING
How long is the initial
training?

Approximately one month which includes a 2 week Ground

School course. This ground course wont be as structured
and organised as you will be used to. The actual schedule
can vary and there may be a lot of down time during the
training programme (which can be of benefit as this allows
new pilots time to arrange their accommodation, get to know
the city etc).

Is there time off during

training? Can I return
home during training?

Your standard roster pattern will start after you have passed
all training and been issued with your CAAV licence. You
will not be able to return home during training and will
complete one rotation directly following the issue of your
licence before receiving your first 2 week VNAation.

MEDICAL
Is the medical part of the
screening process?

The screening consists of a simulator check only. You will

complete the medical during your training programme.
Generally the medical is straightforward and it is rare for a
pilot to fail.

VIETNAM
What is living in Vietnam
like?

Below is some information prepared by one of our pilots on

contract at Vietnam Airlines:
Living in Vietnam is generally cheap. Accommodation varies
in both style and price. In HCMC, a basic, single bedroom
apartment rents for around USD700 a month and a two
bedroom apartment for around USD1300.
The rent depends on location and facilities available e.g.:
pool/gym. Depending on the management, some places
allow ADSL/water/electricity and the like in the rental but
otherwise that cost is around USD100 a month extra.
Houses are cheap compared to an apartment and many
people prefer this lifestyle, but an apartment is often a
simpler option. Depending on the area, you will get a 3-4
bedroom house, with several bathrooms for around
USD1400 a month. School fees are expensive. Average
cost is USD1000, per child, per month at the expatriate
schools. The standard of education is very good and the
children experience a very cosmopolitan atmosphere, with
children from all parts of the globe. Schools: several to
choose from - International, British International, French and
American. All do IB and all have 3 terms.
Primary: USD8,000 with USD1,200 application fee
Secondary: USD10,500 pa with USD1,200 application fee
Here is a link to one International School in Ho Chi Minh:

Transport is very cheap by taxi and there are plenty

available throughout the city areas. Many people use a local
driver with a motorbike/scooter to get around and this is also
very cheap. Public buses are everywhere and extremely
cheap - its just a matter of knowing where to get on and off!
After living here for a while most people choose to buy a
motorbike/scooter and drive themselves around. Costs vary
from USD300 to USD2000 for an average bike/scooter/
depending on whether second hand or new. Ho Chi Minh
City and Hanoi are very busy places, with many restaurants,
bars, shops and markets. Sporting and entertainment
facilities are also available. Domestic travel by air is cheap
and there are some great weekend destinations available
within Vietnam. Good medical clinics are available 24 hours
a day.

What Vietnam
says about us

Vietnam Airlines

Airlines

Rishworth Aviation has proved highly competent in

providing high quality candidates who we are pleased to
have [Rishworth] represent our Airlines. They have
developed excellent relationships with our own personnel
and with their contractors, ensuring that the pilots are happy
with their contract and are performing well for Vietnam
Airlines.
It is with greatest pleasure that we highly
recommend Rishworth. (Captain Hoang Van Manh, Chief
Pilot, Vietnam Airlines)

Vietnam Airlines (VNA) is the National Flag-carrier operating

scheduled flights domestically with many international
destinations in Indochina, Asia, Australia and Europe. They
do not yet offer scheduled services to the USA but this is
likely to happen in the future.

Vietnam Airlines currently operates approximately 66 aircraft

including A320/321, A330, ATR72, B777 and F70, with A320
accounting for half of VNAs current fleet. The Airline has
strong expansion plans for the future and this includes having
150 modern aircraft by 2020.
Vietnam has traditionally been a contractor friendly country
and is well coveted as a place to live because of the location,
lifestyle, upgrade opportunities and the quality contracts that
Rishworth offers. There are currently over 150 expat pilots on
contract to VNA which provides a large and supportive expat
network in Vietnam.

WORKING IN VIETNAM
WITH RISHWORTH
A Pilots Perspective

Captain Sangyong Chong

What I enjoy most about working as a TRE at Vietnam

Airlines...

All the staff are friendly, even the CEO, Im treated like part
of the family. Flying is based on straight Airbus SOPs and
flight training manuals are in English, so there is no risk of
mistranslations. Schedules offer 10h duty days or less, the
first officers are good to fly with, cabin crews are welltrained, and the mechanics have fantastic standards. Its a
wonderful place to work.
There are many smart young
cadets who are willing to learn and keen to fly. I have to be
patient and have an open heart to teach them to be safe
pilots and help them build confidence. This offers a great
sense of achievement as an instructor. I feel lucky to have
a job as an expatriate pilot, as long as you fly well there are
no pressures, it is nice and relaxed, and a great way to meet
pilots from all over the world, share experiences and make
friends.

WHAT OUR PILOTS SAY

ABOUT US

Vietnam Airlines A320

PIC Tom Conard

My name is Tom Conard, and I am an Airbus A-320 captain

working for Vietnam Airlines. My agency is Rishworth
Aviation. Ive been in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam since the
fall of 2004, and Ive loved every minute of it. (My wife loves
living here, too!)
I came from US Airways, taking an early retirement after
over 25 years of service. Coming from a major air carrier in
the U.S. and being an American (Americans are not
mobile). I appreciated the assistance given to me by
Rishworth Aviation. From the initial screening details to
getting settled in Ho Chi Minh City, Rishworth and their
senior pilot here in Vietnam were there to help me.
I chose Rishworth because of the number of Asia contracts
they have available. And, the contracts they offer are
competitive. One of the major differences between a
Rishworth
contract
and
others
is
the
medical/dental/disability insurance package. Simply, its
quite good.

With regard to living and working in Vietnam, my wife and I

are very happy here. The Vietnamese are wonderful
people, very warm, friendly, and welcoming. The country is
quite safe, and we never have to worry about security and
safety. Vietnamese food is some of the best in the world!
Even though this is a commuting contract, many foreign
pilots bring their families to live here with them. There are
many private schools, and they are all academically
excellent. Its a great place to raise children.
Flying for Vietnam Airlines has been fun and enjoyable. Its
fun flying, quite different from what Im used to in the U.S.
The Vietnamese culture permeates throughout the airline.
Im always treated kindly, with courtesy, and respect.
Theyre nice people, and this is a nice place to work.
For my wife and me, this has been quite a memorable
experience. Weve made many friends, and we plan to stay
here through retirement.
I can recommend the
Rishworth/Vietnam Airlines contract to anyone interested in
contract flying.

I have been with Rishworth for over 2 years and am

currently on contract to Vietnam Airlines. During this
period, I have found Rishworth to be very professional and
pro-active. They are helpful and understanding. Their quick
response and friendly staff make them a pleasure to work
with. I recommend Rishworth to anyone venturing into the
world of contract aviation. You will be in very good and safe
hands!

FO P Tan

I have been on contract with Rishworth Aviation in Vietnam

since December 2009. Rishworth provided me with great
support and guidance through the application stage and for
the screening, and this continues now that I am on contract
with them. I enjoyed meeting the Rishworth team when
they visited Ho Chi Minh City recently. They have made the
whole contracting process very easy and I am really
enjoying my new life flying for Vietnam Airlines.

A320 PIC T Knapp

Rishworth provided me with great support and guidance

from the application period until the end of my contract.
Every time I had a question about something, Rishworth
was right there with an answer for me. Working for Vietnam
Airlines was a great experience. Everybody was great to
work with, from the van drivers to upper management. I am
so glad I was able to experience the different kind of flying
and working with so many different nationalities that I would
have never encountered in the US. If anyone was looking to
get into contract flying I would recommend going with
Rishworth Aviation.
