Experiment 5:
Standardization of acid
and base using titration.
Lab day: Friday
Lab session: AM
Lab room: 230 Parker
Locker number: 403
Rotation 2

Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to titrate different acids using sodium hydroxide
to find out the concentration of sulphuric acid.
Calculations
PART A
Mass of KPH transferred
To find mass if the KPH transferred:
(Mass of the weighing bottle + KPH) Mass of empty weighing bottle
Trial 1
Mass of weighing bottle + KPH= 7.8554 g
Mass of empty weighing bottle= 7.4439 g
Therefore, the mass of KPH transferred = 7.8554 g 7.4439 g
= 0.4115 g of KPH
This was the same formula used for Trial 2, 3 & 4.
Concentration of NaOH
To find the concentration for trial 1
First I found the moles of the KPH
Moles= mass of KPH /Molar mass of NaOH
= 0.4115g/204.22g
=0.00201498 moles
Then I found the concentration using the formula:
=Moles/volume in litres
=0.00201498moles/ (17.00 / 1000)
= 0.1138 M
This was the same formula used for trial 2, 3, &4
Average concentration
The average concentration was 0.1138 + 0.1133+ 0.1128 /3
= 0.1133M
Calculation of 3% range

I used the formula:

3/100 x 0.1133 (average concentration)
=0.003399
Upper bound =0.003399 + 0.1133 = 0.116699
Lower bound = 0.003399 0.1133= 0.109901
All the values (0.1138, 0.1133, 0.1128) all fall within the 3% range.
PART B
Concentration of Sulfuric acid for trial 1
Formula:
Volume of NaOH /1000 x 0.1133 (Average concentration from part A)
=19.20/1000 x 0.1133
=0.002175536 then divide by 2
=0.00108768 the divided by (0.0025)
=0.0435 M
This was the same formula used for trial 2, 3, &4.
Calculation for 3% range
Average concentration = 0.0383 + 0.0385 + 0.0385 / 3
= 0.0384 M
3% range =
3/100 x 0.0384
=0.001152
Upper bound = 0.001152 + 0.0384 = 0.03895 M
Lower bound = 0.001152 0.0384= 0.03724 M
The values (0.0383, 0.0385 &0.0385) all fall within the 3% range.

Analysis

PART A
Concentration
of NaOH (M)

Trial 1
0.1138M

Trial 2
0.1133M

Trial 3
0.1128M

Trial 4
0.1114 M

Average concentration = 0.1138 + 0.1133+ 0.1128 /3

= 0.1133M
PART B
Concentration
of Sulphuric
Acid

Trial 1
0.0435M

Trial 2
0.0383M

Trial 3
0.0385M

Trial 4
0.0385 M

Average concentration = 0.0383 + 0.0385 + 0.0385 / 3

= 0.0384 M
Discussion
When I poured the sodium hydroxide solution into a beaker, I made sure it was
covered by a watch glass to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the air,
therefore making it pure and good for use.
When weighing the mass of KPH I made sure they were accurate results and fell
within the 0.38 -0.42 range.
Before adding NaOH to my burette for titration I rinsed the burette with the NaOH
solution to obtain more accurate results, so it wont be mixing with other liquids or
solutions.
After titration I tested if the values fall between the 3% range. By doing that it
confirms that your values obtained are accurate.
I also rinsed the pipette with the solution to be used to prevent errors in
measurement.
Also when I used the pipette to collect some specific volume of the diluted acid
using a syringe, I made sure there were no air bubbles while collecting the dilute
acid because air bubbles are likely to arise when using a syringe.
I made sure to prevent random errors because if random errors were made the
results obtained may be higher or lower than the actual result, depending on the
error made.
Looking at my titration end points they were close enough showing that I had
accurate results, if they were too far apart it will indicate that there was an error in
the process.

Conclusion
This experiment determined that we can prepare a standard solution of sodium
hydroxide and use it to find out the concentration of sulfuric acid, which I obtained
as 0.1133M of NaOH and the concentration of sodium hydroxide was 0.0384 M.
