Course Description & Content


Impact of technology on society; Introduction to engineering as a profession (different engineering fields,
professional societies and registration, soft skills for working in a team); Engineering design and
innovation; Introduction to Intellectual Property (copyright, trademarks, registered design and patents);
Engineering project management; Product safety and professional liabilities; Engineering ethics and
corporate responsibility; Workplace Safety; Environmental impact and market requirements; Case studies
and experience sharing from industry; industrial and professional workshops or seminars (required by a
students major programme).
Learning Outcomes
This course broadens the training of engineering students. At its completion, the students should
understand the impact of technology on the society and the environment, recognize the contributions of
engineers to the society, appreciate the design and innovation aspects of engineering profession, acquire
the skills and tools to manage engineering projects, learn the skills for working in a team, and understand
the value of being an ethical engineer and a responsible citizen.

Learning Resources
Reference materials will be provided in the lecture notes and reserved in the Universitys library. URLs to
videos showed in the lectures are also included in the lecture notes. These videos are only available for
viewing on the campus network only.

* Students missing the quiz or the in-class project will be given zero mark for the quiz or project. In case of
a genuine medical emergency, you must obtain a doctors letter certifying that you were unfit to take the
quiz or the in-class project. Other non-health activities such as work, job interview, travelling, job
training, wedding, etc. are not acceptable excuses. With a genuine medical reason, students may
substitute a missing quiz with a 3,000-word essay on a topic provided by the instructor. These students
will be given 3 days to complete the essay.
** A 20% penalty applies to a late submission.
