Introduction

he year 2015
Product Architecture Design
Master module
was conducted together
with the Criminal Sanctions
Agency of Finland RISE.
The learnings of modularity,
interfaces, product architectures, systems design and
customization were applied
to a challenging combination
of social design and product
design.
Visiting the Helsinki and
Riihimki prisons and their
metal and wood shops and
meetings with workshop
masters and adminstration
gave the students an idea
of the importance of professional education as well as
the regular meaningful work
for the inmates. Surprisingly
the caring and wise atmosphere inside impressed all
participants and strengthend

the commitment to the task.

The task was to learn to
understand and categorize
the very wide product portfolio of products made in the
prison workshops, choose
the most potential categories, enhance the existing
and possibly create new
products, propose a branding to the products and build
the first prototypes.
As most of the present
product portfolio is aimed
to the rural markets, RISE
adminstration wished to
have a more urban focus.
The ease of manufacturing
and assembly was also set
as a target, however through
modularity and variability
the products may grow to be
more complicated systems.
The students being from
over 10 different nationalities
provided a broad research

background of how similar

things have been treated in
their respective countries.
The more theoretical side of
product arhitecture design
was examined by lectures,
most importantly by professor of product development
Katja Hltt-Otto from
Aalto school of engineering.
The results can be found in
this book. Three categories
were prioritized, Urban
Picnic, Urban Gardening
and Toys. The concepts
are ready to be productized
and commersialized, easy
enough to be manufactured
and still create joy and
excitement both to the
makers and the users.

University continues.
I wish to thank Eila Lempiinen, Irene Litmanen,
Riitta Kari, Vesa Kervinen,
Jyrki Heinonen, Jarmo Sole,
Klaus Salonen and Heikki
Hrknen from RISE for
their patience and guidance,
Heli Sde for her expertise
and assistance and professor
Tuuli Mattelmki for her
support and last but not least
the students for their great
achievements during this
seven week module.

A product portfolio as wide

as RISE has, needs constant
care and updating, so I
sincerely hope the collaboration between Rise and Aalto

PICNIC PRODUCTS
FOR URBAN PEOPLE
URBAN LIFESTYLE
People in the cities tend to
live life a little bit different
comparing to the people
in the rural and suburban
areas. Apartments are small.
Public transportation and
bicycles are often used
instead of private motoring.
Well designed, responsively
produced goods are highly
valued. These things were
important drivers during
the whole design process of
LUSIA products.
EDUCATIONAL ASPECT
In our products we
combined many different
materials and production
methods with the aim of
giving the inmate workers

very comprehensive experience and thereby good

possibility to increase their
skills during the time they
spend in prison. This could
possibly help them in to
adapting normal life once
the sentence is completed
and when they are looking
for a job.
NEUTRALITY IN DESIGN
As an interesting finding we
figured out something about
the peoples picnic and
barbeque habits: men barely
never go to picnic together,
or at least they dont call it
a picnic. In the same way
women dont barbecue that
often without men. Thats
why the both picnic and
barbecue products are usually strongly gender polarized in their appearance. We
wanted to make a change by
creating high quality picnic
products that are stylish and
gender neutral with their
sophisticated and minimalistic design.

LUSIA
Picnic products for urban people

PICNIC GRILL
The grill consists of five
parts: the wooden board,
stand, grill, coal tray and
the frame.For storage and
transport the components
are stacked together and
fixed with a strap. For grilling
the stand is placed under the
frame and the wood board
can be used as a cutting
board or as a tray for drinks
and food. Two different
height options of grill make
the heat level easy to adjust.
After grilling the coal tray
can be removed to put the
fire out safely
and to dispose any coal and
ashes that are left.

10

PICNIC BLANKET
Usability and easy
transportation were the
key drivers for the picnic
blanket. Correct folding
is instructed with the well
visible colourful stitchings
and it can be packed with
little effort by using the fixed
straps. The blanket is made
of three different materials
to optimize the comfort and
resistance of the product.
First, a comfortable soft
fabric on top, an insulating
foam in the middle and a
waterproof fabric facing the
ground.The blanket can be
easily attached into a bicycle
or another bag with the
adjustable straps.
GRILL BAG
For transportation, our
urban target group favours
bike, metro and bus. They
want to travel with style and
need a product that is easy
to carry a major issue we
came across when testing
the current offering in grills.
To make this possible, we
designed a beautiful bag
that perfectly fits our grill.
Its made of robust cotton
fabric, its easy to clean or
wash.The front face can
be unzipped wide open
be to access the grill as
conveniently as possible.
For carrying, the bag offers
two options, handles and a
shoulder strap.

GARDEN CART
Multifunctionality for urban gardens

Multifunctionality for urban

gardens and balconies
Arto Kuusisto

14

The aim for the project was to design a product that would
have a justified place in the product portfolio. During the
process, the product was defined as a multifuntional cart for
urban gardens and balconies. It was designed so that the
cart works well in all of the different use scenarions.
MULTIFUNCTIONALITY
AND MEASUREMENTS
As the frame is set to standing position, it can be used
as at table for balconies. The
table top measurements are
65 cm x 55 cm and it stands
at comfortable 72 centimeters. When turned on its
side the frame of the cart
attains the measurements
of a traditional tea trolley
or a side table. If the table
top is removed the cart can
be used to carry firewood
or, with adding similar style
holders as in the green wall,
a multipurpose cart for the
garden. When used as a
cart, the handles height is 81
cm.

STRUCTURE AND USE

ENVIRONMENT
As an environment, urban
balconies and gardens
require the product to be
built in a manner that withstands harsh condition and
use. Structure for the frame
was designed to be simple
but sturdy. The cart is built
around a 19 mm tube frame
with four horizontal support
tubes. The table top is not
solid so that rain water will
not stay on it and the saft
for the wheels runs thought
the pipe creating one solid
structure.

15

GARDEN CART
Multifunctionality for urban gardens

REQUIREMENTS OF
PRISON WORK
Special attention was put on
how the cart can be manufactured in the workshops
by the prisoners. Making of
it should be challenging for
the prisoners to maintain
interest but in a manner that
it does not end up being
overwhelming. The process
of making contains various
steps and methods to be
used in the prison workshops. Combining different
materials also aims to make
the experience of building
the cart rewarding. A balance between challenge
and reward should result
in production conditions in
which uniforn quality for the
products can be achieved.
The nature of the product
and the use environment
makes it possible for the
work quality to be a bit
rough around the edges.
PROTYPE AND MATERIALS
In the prototype, the table
top and wheels are made
out of lacquered plywood.
The intention for the final
product is for it to be a
piece of outdoor furniture
and so to the stand even
rough wheather. To achieve
that, a different material
and final treatment for the
table top and a new set of
wheels might need to be
considered.

Ville Piippo

MOTIVATION BY SUCCESS
I wanted to design something that, in addition to
being a really good product
for the customer, would have
an impact on the inmate
making it. For a product to
be beneficial and motivating
for the inmates, it has to be
appealing to different skill
levels.
The frame of my greenwall
is a very simple stucture.
The wooden pieces are
held together with screws
attached to nuts that are
welded inside both ends of
each pipe. The frame will
be very strong despite the
lightweight appearance. This
structure makes it possible
for even an inmate with
no previous experience to
achieve good quality.

ONLY THE START

People have different needs
for this kind of a platform,
so I focused on making
different ways of use possible with only tiny little
changes. Because of the
flexible manufacturing that
prison workshops can offer,
the customers can decide
on the measurements of
their wall and shelves. All
of the designs work well in
any width so why not give
the freedom of choice to the
customer.
I see this family of products
as a starting package for
RISE to get inspired and
design more products supporting the family. Some
shelves will naturally be
more challenging to make
than others and hopefully
even inspire the inmates
to design more styles and
structures of their own.

19

GREENWALL
Versatility for urban gardening

LEGS FOR DIFFERENT

ENVIRONMENTS
A wall like this will be used
in different environments.
Some people will want it
standing in their balcony,
others will want to have it in
their garden, many will even
want to move it around their
house. To allow for different
operating environments, I
designed a set of different
legs that will use the lowest
screws in the frame to attach
firmly.

20

SHELVES FOR A VARIETY

OF USES
The double pipe structure
allows for endless ways
to compile your own
greenwall. Some shelves
can be attached in different positions for different
plants, some have handles
to ease carrying them in
case you want to enjoy
some afternoon tea next to
your litlle garden. The only
limiting factor here is your
imagination.

22

Concept Development
Nowadays, there are more
and more people place an
importance on their balcony
or terrace environment,
and see them as the place
of rest and relax. There are
lots of reasons for people
to give a balcony garden a
try, especially the apartment
living can make people feel a
bit removed by nature.

When it comes to the

product manufacturing
in the prison, it is suitable
to make the supporters
from metal. Furthermore,
the Hemilli manufacturing,
making products from metal
tubes and frames only, can
let inmates who have no
freedom to access to the
workshop involve in the
product manufacture activities as well.

Vines, as one of varieties of

plants, can make the balcony
look less like a boring
balcony and more like a part
of nature due to its climb
characteristics. We can not
only let this plant climb on
walls, but also on trellises.
With trellises as support,
vines can finally shaped into
different configurations, and
both supporters and shaped
vines will become spot of
lights in the garden balcony.

23

GREENIT
Vines shaper and supporter

There are two modularized

manufacturing processes
which make the manufacturing process more efficient
and easier. One is to make
the supporter as octahedron
units; therefore, customers
can easily assemble their
own vines supporters into
different shapes with units.
The other way is to create
different geometric configurations and be modularized
with the stand, which is also
made from metal tubes and
can hold the configuration
well. The whole supporter
with a stand can stick into
the soil directly, and then it
will be firm and solid enough
for vines climbing on it. On
the other hand, the unique
configuration can be also
hang in the ceiling as a
decoration.

ight has always

fascinated me. For
this project I wanted
to design a luminaire
that fits into the simple
Scandinavian aesthetic,
but would also be easy to
construct using very basic
manufacturing techniques.
Our groups focus being
on balconies and other
semi-outdoor environments
meant that my lamp would
also need protection against
the elements. Together with
this, the wish from RISE to
think about using recycled
materials led me to quickly
discover the treasures in
glass recycling bins.

At home wherever
Rise & Shine is a floor lamp.
With three light sources
pointing in different directions, it creates a rich but
soft ambience in the space it

occupies. It can extend the

season on balcony into the
autumn, but it also works
great in the living room
around the year.
The combination of readymade and newly constructed
parts creates an interesting
contrast in the object. Glass
jars can clearly be recognised to be recycled, but I
wanted to avoid creating an
impression of trash design
and instead keep things
clean and classy.
The name comes from the
age-old phrase, but it also
simultaneously plays with
RISE, that is the shortened
name for Finnish Criminal
Sanctions Agency, which
gives it a quirky new
meaning.

27

RISE & SHINE

Light into dark moments

MODULAR DESIGN
The main structure is formed
by several steel pipes
welded together. These
pipes also serve as conduits
for electrical wiring. The
welded structure features an
elegant satin black finish.
Pickle jars, sandblasted
from the inside, are used as
diffusers and protection for
the light bulbs. The jar lid
is used to attach them into
the fixture. Lid diametres are
standardised, which enables
the user to easily find
replacements for any broken
jars (should that happen) or
just switch things around for
fun, in order to transform the
look of the luminaire.
The light sources are
attached to standard E27
screw sockets and are userreplaceable same as the jars.
Rise & Shine features affordable and energy-efficient
warm white LED bulbs.

CARGO
Magnetic Toy

Magnetic cargo toy set.

Henry Daly
henry.daly@aalto.fi

32

INTRODUCTION
Cargo is a toy set for children aged 3 - 6. The objective of
the design is to make a desirable toy out of simple materials
and challenge the inmates making it.
Builidng mechanisms and fixing machines with moving parts
gives the builder a sense of satisfaction. This sense of satisfaction is the aim of the mechanical systems in this design.
By engaging the prisoners with mechanism designs I hope
that they will add to the design and develop mechanisms
of their own like the way they currently make motorcycle
models of their own designs in Riihimki prison.

33

CARGO
Magnetic Toy

PLAYING WITH CARGO

The crane jib is moved by holding the handle at the back
with your thumb resting on the brass lever. The jib is moved
into a position where the head is near the centre of a
container. Once close enough the container will snap to the
magnet head.
The child can then move the truck to a different position and
unload the container by pressing down on the brass lever.
The magnet in the container base will secure it to another
container or to the steel chassis of the smaller truck.

34

COMMON PARTS
The wheels and wheel bearings are common across both
truck and crane designs. The steel tabs which the wheels are
mounted to are also common across both chassis types. The
Truck cabs used in both models are identical parts.
CONTAINER DETAIL
The container is a wooden block with a hole drilled through
the centre. Both ends are counterbored to seat a magnet
and a DIN 546 round nut. An M4 countersunk screw is used
to secure the parts in place. The nut acts as a fixing and as a
magnetic pick up point. Loctite may be added to the nut to
prevent the parts from loosening over time.

MAGNET FORCES
The magnet is connected to the brass lever by a chord. By
depressing the lever at the end of the crane jib the magnet
can be retracted. Magnet strength versus distance from
magnetic material has been calculated* so that; 1 - the
magnet in the crane head will overpower the magnet in
the container base, 2 - the magnet in the head will retract
enough to reduce the force holding the container to the
point where it drops from the head. Magnet sizes and
distance of retraction were selected based on these calculations. *K & J Magnetics Inc. Calculator

CARGO

WHEEL BEARING DETAIL

The wheel bearing assembly consists of a brass bushing
pressed into a wooden wheel. A steel axle sits inside the
bushing and is fixed to the chassis by a standard M5 button
head screw. To get the wheel spinning well on the axle the
fits between components must be precise and the brass
bushing must not deform when pressed into the wheel outer.
MAGNET HEAD DETAIL
The inside diameter of the magnet head needs to be
machined so that the magnet can slide smoothly inside. A
circlip retention step is machined just inside the end this
circlip stops the magnet from coming out of the head should
the chord break.

38

OBJECTIVE
To design a moving toy that
supports learning through
activity and creative usage.
DESIGN CONCEPT
Customisable mechanical
toy for children 5+ years old.
The toy is designed to be
placassembled from the kit
in a simple way by children
themselves, without the
use of extra tools or glue.
It introduces the basics of
engineering, mechanics, and

art by combining play and

technology.
Since the toy is designed
to be made in prison
workshops, the production
is adjustable for different
levels of technical skills and
provides an opportunity to
learn new skills. It also gives
freedom to inmates to customize and invent new cam
shapes and different types
of automata movements.

39

CAM TOY

THE STRUCTURE
The toy consists of two
major parts the lower part
which is a moving mechanism and the upper part
which is a modular character
figure.
The mechanism: This toy
operates on the theory of
automation; the mechanism
turns the circular movement
of the eccentric cam wheel
into a vertical movement
of the pushrod. There can
be different shapes of cam
wheels providing a variety of
movement options.
The upper part of the toy
is constructed by several
modular building blocks
stacked on a rod. This allows
children to create different
moving shapes. Each block
has several full-length cuts
of 1 millimeter thickness

and 3 millimeters depth

that can be used to attach
self-made shapes of carton
board, such as heads, paws,
wings, of tails of animals.
Children can draw them, or
cut the shapes from existing
pictures, for example the
characters on cereal boxes

42

OBJECTIVE
Create a toy that encourages
children to use imagination
while playing with sounds.
Integrate the themes of a
Finnish castle and a prison
escape into the toys image.
Design concept:
Modular musical toy in
shape of Olavinlinna Castle
tower. The toy functions as a
marble run track and
a xylophone; rearranging
the modules allows to create
multiple sound compositions.

Construction:
The tower consists
of three major parts:
1. The roof part with round
openings for sliding a marble
into the tower.
2. The base part that serves
as a storage for the marbles.
3. Musical elements with
metal plates inside that
produce sounds when a
marble ball touches the
plates. Each element has a
plate of different thickness
producing one note of the
middle octave from Do to
Ti. The amount of modular
elements in a tower can be
chosen by customer.

Dimensions:
120 mm;
single module height 40 mm;
tower with seven musical elements 360x120 mm.

CUSTOMIZABLE MAZE
Playing with PAKO is really
easy, as the maze is divided
into six different parts. One
can insert them to the box,
and there is a possibility to
change the path every time.
There is a lid included in the
package, so it could be even
played without seeing the
ball. It can also be underset
with a cone, in that case
it is easier to balance. If
wanted, it could be turned
into a dollhouse instead, as
different walls could slide
into the box. It is made out
of birchwood, and there are
two possible ways to create
it: with CNC milling machine,
or carving the wood by
hand.

IDEA STORMING
In the beginning, I am focus
on marketing strategy of
prison product. I start to
think about the competitors
and advantages of prison
products. I finally figure out
the opportunity for prison
products is that it made by
prison. Combining prisoners
feature or stories into prison
product can create market
segment.
After our team first discussion, we discuss how to create
more motivation that makes
prisoner want to produce
more product. One of our
idea is to produce product in
fun way. This idea finally becomes my reason to choose
to design toys. It is not only a
good motivation to prisoner.
Toys can bring them fun and
childhood memories. And it is
also a good chance to add

prisoner features (prison humor) into toy design.

In the team of toy design , we
decide to design vintage toys.
Vintage toys gives me a lot of
inspiration about combining
prison humor stories into toys
design. I can focus on how to
combine stories deeply rather
than creating ways to interact with toys. I finally comes
out some ideas. Ladder run
toys and Russian dolls is more
popular idea. To make my design more complete and more
interaction. I decide to combine two ideas into one.

47

RIIHIMEN VANKILA
Humorous toy design

RIIHIMEN VANKILA
RIIHIMEN VANKILA is a toy
design with prison humor.
The package is inspired by
Russian doll. At my first
time walked into Helsinki
prison. I was so surprised
that there are so many
buildings inside the main
building. The structure looks
like an Russian doll. By this
idea, it is easier and more
interesting to display the real
architecture of a prison in a
humorous way. The biggest
box using the image of the
main building of Riihimki
prison ( it can be a series of
all the prison ). About the
appearance of this design,
Finnish apartment buildings
give me a lot of inspiration

48

so I use simple color, minimalist layout to express the

detail.
There is a scene about
prison escape in the movie
The Grand Budapest Hotel.
The leading role use a ladder
to escape. It remind me of
one traditional toy ladder
run toys . Ladder run toys
can create imagination and
interaction easily so I decide
to keep this idea to be my
main topic. RIIHIMEN
VANKILA has three characters, two prisoner and one
police man. Users can create
their own story by building
their own prison and playing chasing games using
ladders.

and analysis skills, patience,
attention concentration, to
learn different geometrical
shapes.

DESCRIPTION
The toy consists of a
wooden base and modular
figures. The boat has
grooves on the top to keep
figures stable, and a fabric
flag. Figures dimensions
allow to put them one on
the top of another or chequerwise. Stripes, which give
them the image of sailors,
are made by stamp.

INTRODUCTION
The aim of this project was
not only to make a good
product for a customer but
also to create collaboration
between prisons with different facilities.
I also tried to combine simple
shapes with simple materials,
that could be recycled or
reused.
HOW IT WORKS
The tent consists of modular
walls, which have a wooden
frame with fabric stretched
on it. The modules are firmly
attached to each other at
particular sides by fabric
connecting elements, which
are also flexible enough to
fold and unfold the tent. To
attach the roof of to close
the door one can use the
velcro fasteners, which are
accented with a colour.

BONUS!
Two doors have zippers
in the middle, that allow to
unfasten a piece of fabric and
use the gap as a window or
fasten a wall of another tent,
so that two or more tents
could be combined.
In this way, the details can
be changed while playing.
This approach makes a game
more interesting and helps
children to develop imaginative thinking.
