We were so fortunate to have such great participation from the friends

It is hard to believe that we are
almost done for the year. Beth
and I feel truly grateful for
having the opportunity to work
with your children. We have had
such a tremendous year
together and one that we hope
the children don’t forget! Please
take a close look at this Month’s
Newsletter. Off to the right, you
will see dates on our calendar
that take us through June. I
wanted to try to include as
much information as possible as
far in advance as possible, so
that you could pencil these into
your schedules. In the
Parent Teacher Conferences- No
School Friday, May 21
additional newsletter pages
there is information that
explains many of these events May 31st
(Field Trip, Author’s Tea Memorial Day- No School
Celebration, and First Grade
Field Day). Please let me know
June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
if you need more information or
need me to clarify anything you Author’s Tea Celebration-
see. I would be happy to do so. 8:15-9:15 (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Special Friend’s Day
Mark your calendars for Special
Friend’s Day on Friday, May 7th.
On Tuesday the children should
have brought home the
invitation they made to send to
their special friend for this day.
Don’t forget, students will be
dismissed at 11:00 a.m.!
First Grade Field Day
On Wednesday, June 2nd our
class will be having our end of
the year Outdoor Game Day.
All four first grades will be
participating here at school.
Several outdoor activities are
being planned for the children
with a tentative cookout or
pizza for lunch to follow. The
activities will begin at 9:30
and finish by 11:30 p.m. Leslie
Leis will also be asking for
volunteers to help with the
games and possibly lunch.
More specific details to come!
Japanese Field Trip
On Friday, May 14, the entire
first grade will be going on a
trip to the Kenny Center to
visit a Japanese Restaurant,
Bakery, Market, and Gift Shop.
The students will be eating
lunch at the Japanese
Restaurant and will have their
choice between a chicken or
noodle dish. We will be asking
for 4-6 parent volunteers to
help out on this trip. If you are
available and would be
interested in joining us, please
contact Leslie Leis.
Closing Program
On Friday, June 4 the Lower
School (Pre-K -2) will have their
Closing Program from
8:30-10:00.

Japa
We are beginning our unit of study
on Japan. The students will be
learning about Japan’s culture and
comparing/contrasting it to the
United States. They will be
studying different Japanese
genres, such as Haiku poetry,
Japanese fairy tales, fiction
(historical fiction), and non-fiction
(alphabet, question/answer)
literature. This is to prepare the
students to write their own
creations for our annual “Authors’
Celebration.” Hopefully, this
experience will inspire the children
to write more of their own stories!

 First Grade Annual Author’s Tea Celebration

W e are getting ready to begin

our final Unit. As a
culminating activity as well
3rd Tea will begin at 9:15 due to a
scheduled Assembly.) Please select the
one that works best for your schedule

as a way to celebrate the writing we
have worked so hard on throughout
the year, the children will be creating a
final book. The children will take their
writing through the entire writing
process and even create their own
hard-back book.
These books will be shared at one of
three Author Teas. We have decided to
have 3 Teas on three different
mornings. It is our hope that this
schedule fits better for our parents.
I would like to schedule the Teas on
the dates listed on the calendar and the
attached sheet. (Please note, the June
!
by indicating your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
choice, and return the form to me as
soon as possible. If your schedule is
flexible, please indicate that, and I will
make the selections accordingly. The
form is attached, but will also come
home as a hard copy.
On the day of your child’s book
reading, your child should wear special
occasion clothes, such as dresses for
girls and long pants and nice shirt for
boys. Some boys may want to wear ties
or suits. Please send a change of
clothes (dress code) for after the Tea.
