The cement industry is one of the main beneficiaries of the infrastructure boom.
With robust demand and adequate supply, the industry has bright future. The
Indian cement industry with total capacity of 165 million tones is the second
largest after china.
Cement consumption in India has increased by over 22% in 2009-10 from 200708. Among the states, Maharastra has the highest share in the consumption at
12.18%, followed by Uttarpradesh, In production terms, Andhra Pradesh is leading
with 14.72% of total production followed by Rajasthan.
As per the working group report on cement industry for the formulation of the 11th
plan, the cement demand is likely to grow at 11.5% per annum during the 11 th plan
and cement production and capacity by the end of the 11 th plan are estimated to be
269 million tones and 298 million tones, respectively, with capacity utilization of
90 per cent.
Foreign cement companies are also picking up stakes in large Indian cement
companies. Swiss cement major Holmic has picked up 14.8 per cent of the
promoters stake in Gujarat Ambuja Cements (GACL). Holisms acquisition has
led to the emergence of two major groups in the Indian cement industry, the
Holmic-ACC-Gujarat Ambuja Cements combine and the Aditya Birla group
through Grasim Industries and Ultratech cement.
ACL has grown dynamically over the past decade. Its current cement capacity is
about 27.25 million tones. The company has five integrated cement
manufacturing plants and eight cement grinding units across the country. ACL
enjoys a reputation of being one of the most efficient cement manufacturers in
the world. Its environment protection measures are on par with the finest in the
country. It is one of the most profitable and innovative cement companies in
India.
ACL is the first Indian cement manufacturers to build a captive port with three
terminals along countrys western coastline to facilitate timely, cost effective
and environmentally cleaner shipments of bulk cement to its customers. The
company has its own fleet of ships. ACL has also pioneered the development of
the multiple bio-mass co-fired technology for generating greener power in its
captive plants.
10
ACL has always met tough challenges and seized the opportunities that have
come its way. It has nurtured the same spirit of enterprise and search for cuttingedge technology with which it started. It thus continues to be the driving force
and in many ways a benchmark for the cement industry in India.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS
The production process is nothing but it is the conversion of raw material into
finished products. But in this company there is specific type of process which is
followed by Ambuja Cements Limited. The cement which produces in this unit is
used for construction of industries, buildings, dams, bridges; etc. for this strength
and quality of cement is required.
Crusher :
Crusher is used to crush the boulder obtained from primary/secondary
blasting to the size which does not exceed 90 mm. The crusher capacity is
20
21
Pre heater :
The most modern pre heater has 5 to 6 stage. The temperature of material
fed from the top is increased in stages from 300c to 950c as hot gas at the
temperature of 1000c is blown against the falling material from the bottom
of the pre heater is fed to the rotary kiln.
Rotary kiln :
The main motor makes the kiln rotating to the speed of 3-4 rpm. Ground and
blended raw-material. Into kiln and the content is transported to the
combustion zone of kiln. The retention time in the kiln is one here with
heating temperature of about 1200c to 1400c. The normal length of kiln is
4 meters from outlet side. Various chemical reaction take place material
progress from feed and to the burning zone. The exit material is clinker.
Clinker, cooling, crushing & storage :
The hot clinker coming out from kiln is cooled slowly by means of air
provided by the fans. The kiln is crushed in clinker crushed and then stored
in storage yard with help of deep bucket conveyor.
Coal mill :
It is used to crush the coal to make fine and then after coal is stored in coal
silo. The coals burned inside the kiln to create high temperature for
combustion process.
22
Cement mill :
The crushed clinker is taken into the clinker hopper in cement mill where it
is added with gypsum and fly ash from their hopper with the help of weigh
feeders. The mixture is taken to the belt conveyor and fed on to the ball mill.
Two H. T. motors rotate the ball mill and hence the mixture of clinker,
gypsum and fly ash grinds in the mills. The material is taken out from the
mill by crating air dough. The fined cement product is storage vessel known
as cement silo.
Cement silo :
They are similar to raw mill storage which is equipped with air slides at the
bottom low pressure. Air is required for operations of this slide which is
created by air blower as per the requirement of the cement for packing
purpose.
Packing plants :
Packing plant is the final stage of cement manufacturing process. The packer
machine is used to fill cement bags. When the cements weight is 50 kg is
filled in bag and bag falls automatically in the conveyor. The belt transfers
these cement bag from packer to truck directly. There is to load the bulk
cement into taker port which carries the bulk cement is exported to the
abroad with the help of port.
23
The entire process in the plant is now controlled through a micro processor
based on programming logic control system to consistently uniform quality
of cement and a high rate of production. The entire performance is
controlled centrally in a single control room. Any change in process is easily
identification so, that necessary step can be taken immediately. It is altered
in computer and taken an action immediately by the respective staff.

Employees hold a key place in business. No business enterprise can exist and
function without employees. The success of business enterprise depends to a large
extent on the quality of its personnel. The growth of business depends mainly on
the willingness and ability of its employees.
Human Resource management should design in such way it will have the ability to
respond to the changes. Maintain good relationship within the organisation; meet
the enterprise social and legal responsibilities. Human relations have to be
maintained constantly in the enterprise. Only the enterprise, which is conscious of
this need, can achieve their targets by efficiently handling their available for a
particular process.
36
It may achieve several purposes assisting in recruitment, job performance and job
satisfaction. It is the remuneration received by an employee in return for his/her
contribution to the organization. It is an organized practice that involves balancing
the work-employee relation by providing monetary and non-monetary benefits to
employees.
Most unskilled and semi-skilled workers are paid by the hour, most professionals
and semi-professionals are paid by the month or the year. Although hourly
employees are called wage workers and others are generally considered salaried,
all depend for their livelihoods on payment by the owners of productive property
that makes a profit on their labor.
37
Wage:
Indian Labour Organization (ILO) defined the term wage as the remuneration
paid by the employer for the services of hourly, daily, weekly, and fortnightly
employees. It also means that remuneration paid to production and maintenance
or blue collar employees.
Salary:
The term salary is defined as the remuneration paid to the clerical and managerial
personnel employed on monthly or annual basis.
38
The objective of Ambuja Cements Limited for wage and salary administration are
as under:
To keep labour and administrative costs in line with the ability of the
organization to pay.
To pay according to the content and difficulty of the job and in tune with
the effort and merit of the employee.
39
40
Nominal Wage :
It is the wage paid or received in monetary terms. It is also known as money
wage.
Real Wage :
Real wage is the amount of wage arrived after discounting nominal wage by
the living cost. It represents the purchasing power of money wage.
41
Minimum Wage :
It is defined as the amount or remuneration which may be sufficient to
enable a worker to live in reasonable comfort, having regard to all obligation
to which an average worker would ordinarily be subjected to.
Living Wage :
According to the committee on fair wages, the living wage is the highest
amount of remuneration and naturally it would include the amenities which a
citizen living in a modern civilized society is entitled to expect, when the
economy of the country is sufficiently advanced and their employer is able
to meet the expanding aspirations of his workers.
Fair Wages :
Fair wages are equal to that received by workers performing work of equal
skill, difficulty or unpleasantness.
Incentive Wage :
This is the amount of remuneration paid to a worker over and above the
normal wage as an incentive for employees contribution to the increase
production or saving in time or material.
42
Here the Ambuja Cements Limited provides fair wages with many incentives to all
employees. They are providing minimum wage to each employee enough for
satisfying his basic needs.

SALARY ADMINISTRATION:
For staff, salary sheets are prepared in account office and payment is also done on
time rate. It is based on the grades of employees. In Ambuja Cement Limited,
following grades are given to the employee.
45
Overtime Payment:
Overtime Payment is admissible towards wage board workers only.
The overtime payment is made on the basis of overtime memo
received from the department head
Extra duty Intimation:
If in an accident, a worker which may have to lose his efficiency of
performing the present job, in such cases company transfers the
employees and if he is not able to work at all the units, then the unit
pays a reward to its employees. On the event of death of a workman
the wages and other dues shall be paid to the nominee as declared
under the provident fund Act, 1952.
Thus, wage and salary administration is done for satisfying the workers
working in the Ambuja Cements Limited.
46
47
4. Productivity :
An interesting development in wage determination has been productivity
standard. This is based on the fact that productivity increase is also the result
of employee satisfaction and contribution to the organization. Although, the
wages are not linked directly to the productivity in an organization, changes
in productivity have their impact on remuneration.
5. Government Legislation :
Government legislations influence wage determination. The two important
legislations which affect wage fixation are: the Payment of Wages Act, 1936
and the Minimum Wages Act, 1948. The important provisions of the
Payment of Wages Act, 1936 are: ensuring proper payment of wages and
avoiding all mall practices like, non-payment, under-payment, delayed and
irregular payment, payment in kind and under-measurement of work.
These all the factors affect while doing the wage and salary administration.
