Murrindindi Shire Council - Preparing

has been playing its part in helping everyone prepare and plan for
the coming 2009/2010 bushfire season.
Council and the Municipal Fire Prevention Committee (MFPC)
have identified strategies targeted at reducing the risks to
individual land owners, in particular have co-ordinated a mail out to
all absentee land owners this season to alert them of the need to
prepare for this fire season.
Presently Council Officers are carrying out annual property
inspections across the shire to identify fire hazards. Where work is
needed to reduce the risk of fire, notices are issued to land owners
with stringent timelines for any required work to be carried out.
Failure to comply with a ‘fire notice’ will see Council completing the
works at the land owner’s expense.
Residents with concerns over neighbouring properties are
encouraged to contact council, to ensure any potential hazards are

CFA and other agencies. Under consideration are Town Protection
Plans (TPP) and Neighbourhood Safer Places (NSP).
A pilot scheme for Town Protection Plans has been recently
launched. As part of the pilot scheme, 17 towns in Victoria’s North
East, including Eildon, have been identified as having high fire risk.
As part of the Town Protection Plan scheme, an area may be
chosen and designated as a ‘neighbourhood safer place’ or

As Christmas draws near we must reflect on the huge year we

have shared as a community. Initially we were desperate to find
our friends and make sure they were ok. We wanted to find out
where they were, how they were getting along and how could we
support them. We believed strongly in sticking together no matter
how many miles we were now separated by.
Flowerdale Playgroup has always been a close knit group. We
identified the need to connect with other mums to have a break
from the isolation motherhood can sometime bring. We were used
to seeing each other weekly and just helping each other out where
we could.
Like all groups in this small community Feb 7th brought big
changes for playgroup. It took a long time to accept that things
would never be the same again as we craved the comfort of what
we once had before. We just wanted to be back at the Jarara
Centre and walk in and be greeted by Tanya’s smiling face and
welcoming arms. This year we have learnt a lot about comfort
zones, how as humans we can cope with the unimaginable push to
the outer limits of our comfort zones. Perhaps for many their
comfort zone may have been abolished. For Flowerdale playgroup
it meant leaving a lot behind and pushing forward. We walked
way from Feb 7th with nothing and many of our friends we were
so used seeing weekly had moved away.
The question whether or not to continue never crossed our minds.
It was important to keep going as we knew the need for a
playgroup was important. .We began our year with a search for a
location and has settled well into the Flowerdale Community Hall.
Over the year we have been constantly supported by Playgroup
Victoria, who recently won an award for its contribution to
playgroups in bushfire affected communities. When the team from
