Options for Configuring Desired Engine Speed

February 2014

Market

Marine

Application

C7 through C32 Propulsion and Auxiliary

Description

Multiple options are available to set the desired engine speed. The engine application requirements will
determine which option should be used. The different methods of controlling the desired speed of the
engine are Throttle Position Sensor (or other PWM signal), 0-5V or 4-20mA, J1939 (CAN) Speed
Control, Digital Speed Control.

* Primary throttle selection is always PWM #1. NOTE: Since it is installed by default, a valid PWM
primary throttle signal is always required (even though it is not the selected throttle). The required
PWM signal duty cycle is 5% to 95% and frequency is 150 Hz to 1000 Hz. If the PWM signal is out of
range a 91-13 diagnostic will occur. If there is no valid primary PWM signal a 91-8 diagnostic will
occur. If secondary throttle is installed but not valid a 1249-8 code will occur.
** Secondary throttle input is always PWM #2 if the secondary throttle enable status is configured to
ENABLED through ET.
*** Digital Speed Control is not selectable for Primary, Secondary or Tertiary. If it is enabled in Cat ET
and the Digital Enable circuit is open, it will override all other throttle inputs.
NOTE: Legacy Sync Mode (pre-Tier 3) requires use of PWM throttle input.

Sync Input Configuration

Refer to the following table to determine Sync Input Configuration for your particular installation:

NOTE: Consider ACTIVE LOW to be wired to battery (-).

If a throttle selection is made to a throttle source that is configured uninstalled the throttle selection inputs are
considered invalid and the THROTTLE DESIRED SPEED reverts to the last valid selection or to the primary
throttle if a valid selection has not been identified during the current power cycle.
