Kingdom,locatedinmoderndayMaheshwaronthebanksoftheNarmadaRiver.Thegenerationsof
enmitybetweentheKshatriyaHaihayaandtheBrahminBhargavas,fromwhomParashuramahailed,were
mentionedintheMahabharatanumeroustimes.
TheHaihayawereruledbyapowerfulandcruelKing
namedKartaviryaArjuna.Hewastheincarnation
ofSudarshana,LordVishnu'sCelestialweapon,Chakrathat
hadtakenbirthinhumanform.Inaddition,Kartavirya
worshippedadivinebeingknownasDattatreya,embodiment
ofTrimurtianddescendantoftheSaptarishiAtri.Forhis
obeisance,Dattatreyahadgrantedthekingaflyinggolden
chariotthatwouldtravelwhereverhewishedandone
thousandarms.
Withtheseboons,Kartaviryabecameimmeasurablypowerful,
conductingmanymilitaryconquestsafterwhichhe
madeMahishmatiinpresentdayMaheshwarcapitalofhis
Kingdom.Kartaviryabecamesopowerfulthathewaseven
abletodefeatandimprisonthedemonKingRavanaat
theGodavari.Ravana,inturn,wouldlaterbethenemesisof
theRamayana.

TheviolentpersecutionofBrahminsbyKshatriyahadatthetimespannedgenerations.Aurva,great
grandfatherofParashurama,recalledavividchildhoodexperience:
Whilelyingunborn,IheardthedolefulcriesofmymotherandotherwomenoftheBhrigurace
whowerethenbeingexterminatedbytheKshatriyas.WhenthoseKshatriyasbeganto
exterminatetheBhrigustogetherwithunbornchildrenoftheirrace,itwasthenthatwrathfilled
mysoul.Mymotherandtheotherwomenofourrace,eachinanadvancedstateof
pregnancy,andmyfather,whileterriblyalarmed,foundnotinalltheworldsasingleprotector.
ThenwhentheBhriguwomenfoundnotasingleprotector,mymotherheldmeinoneofher
thighs.

WithpleasureshallIrecitethatexcellenthistoryofthegodlikedeedsofRama,thesonof
JamadagniwhotracedhisorigintotheraceofBrigu.
Mahabharata3:117
AsRamagrewolder,hewassincereinhispietyandpleasedLordShivawiththeoblationof
excruciatingtapas.Asablessing,hewasgrantedtheParashuofShiva,afterwhichhewasknown
asParashuramaor'Ramawithaxe'.
SoonafterParashuramareceivedhisblessing,KingKartaviryaoftheHaihayacameuponthehermitageof
JamadagniThevisithappenedatatimeParusharamawasawayintheforestgatheringyagnaand
althoughtheKinghadamassiveentourage,thesaptarishiwasabletoservetheKingagrandfeast.When
Kartaviryaaskedhowhewasabletodoso,JamadagnishowedhimablessedKamadhenucalf,givento
JamadagnibyIndra,whichwasabletograntwishes.Kartaviryawascovetousandwantedthecalfashis
own.TherishirefusedandKartaviryastolethesacredanimal.
Returninghome,Parashuramawasinfuriatedandtraveledtotheroyalpalace.Kartaviryasentseventeen
akshauhinistofaceParashurama.Brandishinghisaxe,hedecimatedtheentireHaihayaarmyandkilled
themightyKingKartavirya,retrievingthecalf.Whenhereturnedhome,hisfatherwaspleased,butseeing
thebloodstainedaxeofParashurama,alsoconcerned.Hecautionedhissonhemustbeawareofwrath
andpride.Parashuramaacceptedthereprimandofhisfather,inpenanceandwentonapilgrimagetoholy
placesforoneyearinpurification.
Meanwhile,thesonsofKartaviryadiscoveredtheirfatheratthepalaceandknewthatonlyParashurama
couldhavekilledhim.Inrevenge,theytraveledtothehermitageandmurderedJamadagni,discharging
arrowsintohimlikekillingastag.Afterwards,theydecapitatedhisbodyandtookhisheadwiththem.
WhenParashuramareturnedhome,hefoundhismothernexttothebodyofhisfather,cryinghysterically
asshebeatherbreasttwentyonetimesinarow.Furious,hehunteddownthesonsofKartaviryaatthe
palace.Hekilledthemallandreturnedwiththeheadofhisfathertoconductthecremation.Parashurama
thenvowedtoenactagenocideonthewarmongeringKshatriyastwentyonetimesover,onceforeach
timehismother'shandhitherchest.

IntheintervalbetweentheTretaandDwaparaYugas,Parashurama,greatamongallwho
havebornearms,urgedbyimpatienceofwrong,repeatedlysmotethenobleraceof
Kshatriyas.Andwhenthatfierymeteor,byhisownvalour,annihilatedtheentiretribeofthe
Kshatriyas,heformedatSamantapanchakafivelakesofblood.

OnelegenddescribesParasharumareturningtoavillageafterbattleinwhatisnowtheBadamiTaluka,in
theBagalkotdistrictofKarnataka.WhilethewarriorsagewashedhisaxeintheriverMalaprabha,
unknowntohim,downstreambeyondabendintheriver,villagewomenwerecleaningtheirclothes.His
mightyaxestainedtheentireriverredandthewomenexclaimed"Aihole!"translatingto'Oh,whatariver!'.
ThisissaidtobetheetymologyofthepresentdayvillageAihole.
ThereisanotherlegendthatsomeofthefishermancommunityofKeralawhoweresettledinthecoastal
areas,receivingwordasParashuramaapproached,tookthefishermanthreadsplititintotwosacred
threadsthatmarkedthemtwiceborn,hidthemintheforestandtraveledsouth.Parashuramathengave
theirlandtothem.
AfterhehadfinallyridtheworldofKshatriyas,ParashuramaconductedtheAshvamedhasacrifice,done
onlybysovereignkingsandgavethelandhehadconqueredtotheBrahminheadpriests,whoperformed
theyagyaKashyapa.AfterseeingtheimpoverishedconditionofsomeBrahminsinnorthernIndiainvolved
inpriestlyservicesParshuramgavehimthelandthathehadconquered.TheAshvamedhademandedthat
theremainingKshatriyakingseithersubmittoParashuramaorstopthesacrificebydefeatinghiminbattle.

ParashuramaisuniqueinthatalthoughheisthesixthavatarofVishnu,asanimmortal,hehasalsolived
toseethesubsequentincarnationsofVishnuinRamaandKrishna.Parashuramaplayedanimportantrole
inbothRamayanaandMahabharata.

Shiva'sBow

IntheRamayana,ParashuramahadgiventhebowofShivato
KingJanaka,thefatherofprincessSitaforherswayamvar.As
atestofworthiness,suitorswereaskedtoliftandstringthe
mysticweapon.NoneweresuccessfuluntilRama,butinthe
processofbeingstrung,thebowsnappedinhalf.This
producedatremendousnoisethatreachedtheearsof
MeetingofRamaandParashurama

ParashuramaashemeditatedatoptheMahendraMountains.
InValmikiRamayana,ParashuramastopsthejourneyofSri
RamaandhisfamilyafterhismarriagetoSita.Hethreatensto

killSriRamaandhisfather,KingDasharatha,begshimtoforgivehissonandpunishhiminstead.
ParashuramaneglectsDasharathaandinvokesSriRamaforachallenge.SriRamaprovestobeequal
withhiminallcommonweapons.HenceparasuramagiveshimthedivineSharangabow(thepersonal
bowofSupremeLordVishnu)andtellshimtostringit.Ramadoesthatinablinkandpointsaarrowat
parasurama.Thewarriorsagerealizedhewaslookingathisownsubsequentreincarnationandgiveshis
divineweaponstoRamaandretirestofurthurpenance.
InoneversionplayedinRamlilasacrossIndia,Parashuramaarrivedtothescenedeeplyangry.The
KshatriyaswereadvisedbyBrahmarishiVasisthanottoconfrontthesage,butSitastillapproached.
Parashuramablessedher,saying"DheerghaSumangalibhavah,"or"Youwillhaveyourhusbandalivefor
yourlifetime."
WhenhethenturnedtoconfrontRama,Parashuramawasunabletolifthisaxe.Hewasheldbackbyhis
ownwordandpacifiedbythebrillianceofRama.Whenthewarriorsagerealizedhewaslookingathisown
subsequentreincarnation,hisownbowflewtoRamaalongwiththeessenceofVishnu,andthusthe
seventhavatarwasfullyrealized.

ParashuramaandBhishma,twoofthegreatestwarriorsoftheepics,sharedaninterestinghistorytogether
asguruandstudent.BhishmawasaKuruprinceandParashuramainstructedhiminthemartialartsasa
boy.Theirconflictbeganyearslater,withthebeautifulprincessAmba.Alongwithher
sistersAmbikaandAmbalika,PrincessAmbahadbeenabductedbyBhishmainamisunderstanding

betweentwokingdoms.Now,withherhonortainted,noman
wouldtakeherforbrideandshewascondemnedtoremain
destitute.Bhishmahimselfwasunabletomarrydueto
hisbhishanapratigya,orvowofcelibacyandallegiance
toHastinapur.AmbathensoughtthehelpofParashuramato
killBhishma.
Takingpityonherplight,theavataragreedtofighthisformer
studentonherbehalf.Thebattlelastedtwentythreedays,by
theendofwhich,bothwarriorswerebloodiedandpiercedby
arrows.Onthe23rddayofbattle,Bhishmaattemptedtouse
thePrashwapastraagainstParashurama.Learnedofinhis
previousbirthasPrabhasa(oneoftheAshtaVasus),this
weaponwasunknowntoParashuramaandwouldputthe
afflictedtosleepinthebattlefield.Thiswouldhavegiven
Bhishmathevictory.Beforehecouldreleaseit,however,a
voicefromtheskywarnedhimthat"ifheusesthisweaponit
wouldbeagreatinsulttowardshisGuru."

Bhishmatakingthebhishanapratigya

Pitrsthenappearedandobstructedthechariotof
Parashurama,forbiddinghimfromfightinganylonger.ThespiritofParashurama'sfather,Jamadagniand
hisgrandfather,Ruchika,spoketohim:
Oson,neveragainengageinbattlewithBhishmaoranyotherKshatriya.Heroismand
courageinbattlearethequalitiesofaKshatriyaandstudyoftheVedasandthepracticeof
austeritiesarethewealthoftheBrahmans.Previously,youtookupweaponstoprotectthe
Brahmans,butthisisnotthecasenow.LetthisbattlewithBhishmabeyourlast.Osonofthe
Bhrigurace,itisnotpossibletodefeatBhishma.

asannyasi.Asthedayprogressed,Drona,thenapoorBrahmin,approachedParashuramaaskingfor

becomescrucialasDronalaterbecamethegurutoboththePandavasandtheKauravaswhofought
againsteachotherintheKurukshetraWar.
ItissaidthatLordParashuramacarriedLordVishnu's"SudharshanaChakra"and"Bow"andLord
Balram's"Gadha"whiletheyfulfilledtheireducationwithGuruSandipani.

FateOfKarna

KarnawashalfbrothertothePandavasandthesonofSurya,butwasraisedbyaSutacharioteer.Karna
liestoParashuramathatheisaBrahminandadescendantofBriguMaharishi.Parashuramathenaccepts
himashisstudentandteacheshimofallthepowerfulBrahmandaastraweapons.Parashuramatrains
KarnatosuchapointthathedeclaresKarnatobeequaltohimselfintheartofwarfareandarchery.
Oneday,asParashuramaslept,restinghisheadonthelapofKarna,ascorpioncrawledupthelegofthe
studentandbitKarna'sthigh.Inspiteofthepain,Karnaneitherflinchednorcriedtoavoiddisturbinghis
guru'srest.Warmblood,however,trickleddownhislegandwokeParashurama.Insomeversions,
LordIndrabecameafraidofthefightingprowessofKarnaandhehimselftooktheformofabeeandstung
Karna'sthighinordertobenefithissonArjuna.[4]ConvincedthatonlyaKshatriyacouldhavebornesuch
paininsilence,ParashuramarealizedthatKarnahadliedandcursedhisstudentthathisknowledgewould
failhimwhenitwasmostcrucial.UponKarna'spleading,Parshuramagiftedhimthecelestialweapon
calledBhargavastra,alongwithhispersonalbowcalledVijaya,forbeingsuchadiligentstudent.
Yearslater,duringtheKurukshetrawar,Karnahadadreaminwhichheenvisionedhisguruandasked
himtotakebackthecursehehadplacedyearsback.Parashuramarevealedthathehadknownall
alongKarnawasaKshatriya,butbecausehewasaworthystudentParashuramahadinstructedhim
regardless.TheavatarexplainedtoKarnathattheBrahmandaastrahadtofailhimwhenheneededit
most.IfhekilledArjuna,DuryodhanawouldbekinginsteadofYudhishthiraandchaoswouldensue.
ParashuramaaskedKarnatoaccepthiscurseandaskedhimtodieatthehandsofArjuna,sothatthe
worldmightliveinpeace.Karnaacceptedhisguru'swordsandinreturnthegratefulguru,Parashurama
blessedKarnawithimmortalgloryandeverlastingfame.
AllthreestudentsofParashuramaBhishma,DronaandKarnafoughtontheKauravaside(fordifferent
reasons)andwerekilledbyunfairtricks.

AccordingtoPuranas,ParashuramatravelledtotheHimalayastopayrespecttohisteacher,Shiva.While
travelling,hispathwasblockedbyGanesha,sonofShivaandParvati.Parashuramathrewhisaxeatthe
elephantgod.Ganesha,knowingtheweaponhadbeengiventoParashuramabyhisfather,alloweditto
severhislefttusk.
HismotherParvatiwasinfuriatedanddeclaredshewouldcutoffthearmsofParashurama.Shetookthe
formofDurga,becomingomnipotent,butatthelastmoment,Shivawasabletopacifyherbymakingher
seetheavatarasherownson.Parashuramaalsoaskedherforgivenessandshefinallyrelentedwhen
Ganeshahimselfspokeonbehalfofthewarriorsaint.ParashuramathengavehisdivineaxetoGanesha
andblessedhim.AnothernameforGaneshabecauseofthisencounterisEkadanta,or'OneTooth'.

BeatingBackTheArabianSea

PuranaswritethatthewesterncoastofIndiawasthreatened
bytumultuouswavesandtempests,causingthelandtobe
overcomebythesea.Parashuramafoughtbackthe
advancingwaters,demandingVarunareleasetheland
ofKonkanandMalabar.Duringtheirfight,Parashuramathrew
hisaxeintothesea.Amassoflandroseup,butVarunatold
himthatbecauseitwasfilledwithsalt,thelandwouldbe
barren.
LordParashuramawithSaraswat
BrahminsettlersdemandingVarunamake
theseasrecedetosavethelandsofKonkan
andKerala

ParashuramathenperformedatapasyaforNagaraja,theKing
ofSnakes.Parashuramaaskedhimtospreadserpents
throughoutthelandsotheirvenomwouldneutralizethesalt
filledearth.Nagarajaagreedandalushandfertilelandgrew.
Thus,Parashuramapushedbackthecoastlinebetweenthe

foothillsoftheWesternGhatsandtheArabianSea,creatingmoderndayKerala.
ThecoastalareaofKerala,Konkan,Karnataka,GoaandMaharashtra,aretodayalsoknown
asParashuramaKshetraorLandofParashuramainhomage.PuranasrecordthatParashuramaplaced
statuesofShivaat108differentlocationsthroughoutthereclaimedland,whichstillexisttoday.Shiva,is
thesourceofKundalinienergyanditaroundhisneckthatNagarajaiscoiledandsothestatueswerein
gratitudefortheirbanefulcleansingoftheland.
Thenhetookawinnowingbasket,orSurpa,andthrewitatthesea.Thewaterretreatedandfromthe
placethebasketfellatGokarna,landroseagain.ThislandiscalledKerala,or'Siirparaka'(Brahmanda
Purana,Chapters98and99).Itisalsosaidthatwhilebeatingbackthesea,Parashuramafiredanarrow
fromhismysticalbowthatlandedinGoaatBenaulim,creatingSalkacheTollemor'LotusLake'.

himaudienceeveryday,whileheislivinginthenewlycreatedland.LordShivaacceptedhisrequest.Lord
Parshuramalsobrought60'Vipras'tosettleinKonkan.OnesuchVipranamed'Vyad'installedaShivalinga
atGuhagar.Inthisera,sinceevilthoughtsaresupposedtoprevail,Godsaretoremainintheirinvisible
forms.Accordingly,LordShivadecidedtoremaininvisibleintheShivalingainstalledbyVyadMuni.This
sameShivalingaisthewellknownVyadeshwar.Thus,LordShivastaysatGuhagarinthe'Vyadeshwar'
Shivalingafromthoseyearstheretonow.Accordingtoanotherhistory,intheeraofKingSakuran,the
VyadeshwarShivalingawasreinventedandtheTemple,whichweseetoday,wasconstructed.

Rambhoja

KshetrascripturehasalegendinwhichakingnamedRamabhojaworshippedParashurama.Hewasthe
rulerofthelandsbetweenGokarnaandKanyakumariandwasproclaimedkingoftheentireParashurama
Kshetra.Whileperformingaswamedhayajna,hewasplowingtheland,butmistakenlykilledasnakethat
wasarakshaindisguise.Inrepentance,RambhojawasdirectedbyParashuramatobuild
arajathatpeethaorlargesilverpedestal,withtheimageofaserpentatitsfourcornersinobeisance.
ParashuramaalsoorderedthathedistributegoldtotheneedyequaltohisownweightasTulabhara.
RambhojaperformedtheashwamedhayajnasuccessfullyandParashuramaappearedbeforehimagain,
declaringthathewaspleased.Tothisday,thesilverpedestalremainsacenterofpilgrimage.The
surroundinglandisknownasThoulava,inremembranceoftheTulabharaofRambhoja.

Surya

godSuryaformakingtoomuchheat.Thewarriorsageshot
severalarrowsintothesky,terrifyingSurya.When
ParashuramaranoutofarrowsandsenthiswifeDharanito
bringmore,thesungodthenfocusedhisraysonher,causing
hertocollapse.SuryathenappearedbeforeParashurama
andgavehimtwoinventionsthathavesincebeenattributedto
theavatar,sandalsandanumbrella.

Dattatreya

Kalaripayattu

ParashuramaandthesaptarishiAgastyaareregardedasthefoundersofkalaripayattu,theoldestmartial
artintheworld.Parashuramawasamasterintheartofweaponry,astaughttohimbyShiva.Assuch,he
developednorthernkalaripayattuorvadakkankalari,withmoreemphasisonweaponsthanstrikingand
grappling.SouthernkalaripayattuwasdevelopedbyAgastyaandfocusesmoreonweaponlesscombat.
Kalaripayattuisknownasthe'motherofallmartialarts'.
Bodhidharma,thefounderofZenBuddhism,alsopracticedkalaripayattu.WhenhetraveledtoChinato
spreadBuddhism,hebroughtthemartialartwithhim,whichinturnwasadaptedtobecomethebasis
ofShaolinKungFu.

givinguphispossessionstopracticepenance.ThefirstbookoftheMahabharatawrites:
ThesonofJamadagni,aftertwentyonetimesmakingtheEarthbereftofKshatriyas,wended
tothatbestofMountainsMahendraandtherebeganhisasceticpenance.

HetraveledtocentralIndiaatthenorthernendoftheEasternGhatsandWesternOdishaandascended
theMahendraMountains.Beforeheleft,Parashuramadistributedtheterritoriesheconqueredamonga
clanofBrahminscalledtheBhumihar,whoruledformanycenturies.Kingdomsincluded
theCheras,Pandyas,Dravida,Mushika,KarnataandKonkana.
