Sometimes it can be so hard to find the perfect toy to make for those cute
little boys in your life. These quick and easy toys are the perfect solution!
Great for babies and big boys alike!
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Percy the plane:

Construction:

( seam allowance is included; please use a very small stitch for all sewing).

Trace all of your templates, transferring any markings, onto cardboard or template
plastic and cut them out along the traced lines.
Take your red spot fabric and fold this in half, right sides together. Trace your
top and bottom templates once each onto the folded fabric, making sure you
transfer all markings. Cut your shapes out along the traced lines.
Take your two plane top pieces and place these on top of each other, right sides
together. Pin together and then sew all the way along the top edge, leaving the
complete bottom edge open as marked.
Take your two plane bottom pieces and place these on top of each other, right
sides together. Pin together and then sew all the way along the centre bottom
seam, leaving the turning gap open as indicated.
Take your piece of striped wing fabric. Fuse a piece of lightweight fusible fleece
measuring 5 x 10 to the wrong side of half of your fabric and a piece of heavy
interfacing measuring 5 x 10 to the wrong side of the remaining half. Fold the
fabric panel in half, right sides together. Trace your wing templates twice each
onto the wrong side of the folded fabric. Sew the wings together by sewing along
the traced lines, leaving the ends open as indicated.
Cut your wings out approx 1/8 outside the sewn lines. Turn and press well.
Topstitch the wings all the way around the edges.
Take your plane top and one of your large wings. Place the wing on top of one
side of your plane top, right sides together, using the marked stars as a placement
guide. The raw edge of your wing should meet the raw edge of your plane top.
Sew the wing into place with your sewing machine approx 1/8 from the raw
edges. Repeat with your remaining large wing and your two small tail wings.

Percy & Herb.

Take your plane bottom and your plane top. Place these right sides together and
tack them to each other all the way along the raw edges, ensuring that the seams
meet and that the wings lay between the two layers.
Sew the plane top and bottom together.
Turn your plane right side out through the gap in the bottom and then stuff your
plane firmly with polyester toy fill.
Ladder stitch the gap in the base of your plane closed, stuffing a little more with
filling as you go to avoid a dimple.
Trace all of your eye & window shapes onto the paper side of some Vliesofix and
rough cut these shapes out. Iron your windscreen & windows to your white wool
felt, your outer eyes onto your blue wool felt and your pupils onto your black wool
felt. Cut all of the shapes out along the traced lines.
Take your windscreen and eye pieces. Keeping the backing paper in place on the
back of your windscreen piece, peel the paper from the back of your eye pieces
and position these onto your windscreen. Iron to fuse in place. Now peel the
backing paper from your windscreen.
Machine appliqu the outer and inner eye pieces into place on your windscreen
using the appropriate coloured thread. Take a length of 6 strand white
embroidery floss and create a pupil inside each inner eye with a triple wrap
French knot.
Fuse the windscreen into place on the front of your plane. If you are having
trouble fusing this with the curve of the plane, you can pin or glue tack the
remaining sections in place. Using 2 strands of white embroidery floss, blanket
stitch the edges of the windscreen into place.
Peel the backing paper from your side window pieces and fuse these into place
on both sides of your plane. Using 2 strands of white embroidery floss, blanket
stitch the windows into place.
Mark a smiling mouth onto the front of your plane with a grey lead pencil. I
recommend that the middle of the mouth follow the front seam and then curve up
from there at the sides (refer to photo). Work the mouth with 2 strands of black
embroidery floss and small chain stitches.

Percy & Herb.

Trace and cut out 4 wheel pieces from your black wool felt. Take two wheel
pieces and sew these together all the way around the edge. Snip a turning gap
into one layer only of your sewn wheel, referring to the marking on your template.
Turn the wheel right side out through this gap. Stuff lightly and slip stitch closed.
Ladder stitch the top half of your wheel onto the side of Percy approx below
the wing. Ladder stitch this in place by stitching around the wheel turning gap,
therefore hiding this in the process.
Repeat for the remaining wheel.

Herb the helicopter:

Construction:

( seam allowance is included; use a very small stitch for all sewing).

Trace all of your templates, transferring any markings, onto cardboard or template
plastic and cut them out along the traced lines.
Take your yellow print fabric and fold this in half, right sides together. Trace your
top and bottom templates once each onto the folded fabric, making sure you
transfer all markings. Cut your shapes out along the traced lines.
Take your two helicopter top pieces and place these on top of each other, right
sides together. Pin together and then sew all the way along the top edge, leaving
the complete bottom edge open as marked.
Take your two helicopter bottom pieces and place these on top of each other,
right sides together. Pin together and then sew all the way along the centre
bottom seam, leaving the turning gap open as indicated.
Take your helicopter bottom and your helicopter top. Place these right sides
together and tack them to each other all the way along the raw edges, ensuring
that the seams meet. Sew the helicopter top and bottom together. Turn right side
out.
Take a piece of your blue propeller fabric measuring 8 x 8 and fuse a piece of
lightweight fusible fleece measuring 4 x 8 to the wrong side of half of this. Fold
the fabric panel in half, right sides together. Trace your large propeller template
four times onto the wrong side of this folded fabric. Sew the large propellers
together by sewing along the traced lines, leaving the ends open as indicated.
Cut your large propellers out approx 1/8 outside the sewn lines. Turn and press
well. Topstitch all the way around the edges.

Percy & Herb.

Meet the raw ends of your four large propeller pieces together, overlapping each
other slightly to create a cross. Machine tack the ends together in place making
sure they are well secured.
Take a needle threaded with a length of your 6 strand red embroidery floss and
your large red button. Accessing the helicopter top seam through the turning gap,
sew the propellers into place on the top of Herb by sewing through the top seam,
through the propeller cross and then the button. I recommend that you sew
through these layers a few times to ensure strength.
Stuff your helicopter firmly with polyester toy fill.
Ladder stitch the gap in the base of your helicopter closed, stuffing a little more
with filling as you go to avoid a dimple.
Fuse the windscreen into place on the front of your helicopter. If you are having
trouble fusing this with the curve of the helicopter, you can pin or glue tack the
remaining sections in place. Using 2 strands of white embroidery floss, blanket
stitch the edges of the windscreen into place.
Peel the backing paper from your side window pieces and fuse these into place
on both sides of your helicopter. Using 2 strands of white embroidery floss,
blanket stitch the windows into place.

Percy & Herb.

Mark a smiling mouth onto the front of your helicopter with a grey lead pencil. I
recommend that the middle of the mouth follow the front seam and then curve up
from there at the sides (refer to photo). Work the mouth with 2 strands of black
embroidery floss and small chain stitches.
Take a piece of your remaining blue propeller fabric measuring 4 x 4 and fold this
in half right sides together. Trace your small propeller template three times onto
the wrong side of this folded fabric. Sew the small propellers together by sewing
along the traced lines, leaving the ends open as indicated.
Cut your small propellers out approx 1/8 outside the sewn lines. Turn and press
well.
Meet the raw ends of your small propellers together, overlapping slightly and then
machine sew the ends together, ensuring they are well secured. Take your small
red button and sinking a knot into your toy, sew the propellers into place on the
helicopters tail with the button. I recommend sewing through the layers a few
times for added strength.
Take your remaining blue fabric and cut two strips measuring 1 x 3. Take one
of your strips and fold this in half, right sides together, along the length. Sew the
strip along the two short and one long raw edges leaving a gap for turning in
the centre of the long edge. Snip corners and turn right side out.
Stuff the landing skid with polyester toy fill and slip stitch the gaps closed.
Ladder stitch a 1 section of your landing skid onto the bottom side of Herb.
Ladder stitch this in place by stitching around the turning gap, therefore also
hiding this in the process.
Repeat for the remaining landing skid.

May the floss be with you!
