superior a 65 anos.
Abstract
Introduction: Muscular flexibility is defined by different variables. Inside them, the time of static stretch has been reduced to a limited
number of studies. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to undertake a systematic bibliographic review centred in the temporal
variable of the static stretch duration and its effects on the muscular flexibility. Relevance: Knowledge about the time of static stretch
variable may be considered as relevant for the stretching work done by physical therapists in the clinical context and by sportsmen and
trainers in the sport context, with the results optimisation purpose. Methodology: It was realized a research about the theme, including
the last 15 years of publication (from Google, Medline, Medscape, PEDro, PhysioBase e Pubmed), and a consequent comparative
analysis of the articles and discussion was done. Results: It was verified that stretching times of 30 seconds of duration may correspond
to the most advantages times if we want to gain range of motion. It seems that there is no relevant evidence that it is effective to do
analytical stretch with a duration over 30 seconds, excepting people aged 65 years or older. Discussion: Times of stretching superior
to 30 seconds may be disadvantage to gain range of motion, because that time seems to be sufficient to produce maximal tecidular
deformation. Older populations need bigger times of stretching because of its rigid tecidular nature. Different recommendations and
orientation lines for the realization of future studies inside the present line of investigation are presented in the article. Conclusions:
Time of static stretch considered ideal seems to be 30 seconds duration, and it becomes one minute in the older persons.
Key Words: Static stretching, Time of stretch, Flexibility, Range of motion.
