Please Consider Our Verges!

A letter received in the Editors postbag
this month expressed extreme concern
over the parking on the verges in our
lovely village, particularly around the
ponds and on the village green, leaving
the turf in a terrible state and mud everywhere. I am sure this concern strikes a
chord with many people who also agree it
is having a detrimental effect on the appearance of our lovely village.
The matter could easily be improved if all
people gave careful consideration to
where they were parking and made sure it
wasnt going to cause damage to the area
or inconvenience to other people using
the footpaths or visiting the ponds.
Please help us to keep our village an
attractive place to live.

Mallard News
Gert & Daisy......

Happy New Year ter everybody!

We hev hed a few comments that you missed us larst month. We hed ter put our report in
by the 10th December. We hed a feel round our presents and cudnt work owt what they
were so decided wed better wait until arter Christmas.
Bert bought Gert a fancy foodmixer hoping her cakes will now improve. She bought him
sum headphones so she dont hev ter listen ter motorbikes roaring round while shes
trying ter watch Pointless. She thinks shes good at that game cos she get 100 points
every toime.
Sid bought Daisy a banjo to go with her joanna. That wus luvly but shed asked fer a
mandolin. All is OK now as the nice man in the shop changed it. Not to be outdone, Gert
bought herself a cornet (small trumpet) which she larst played at school about 45 years
ago. The memory is coming back but they do say long term memory is the larst to go,
dont they? Apologies to anyone within a mile radius of her house. Watch this space for
Gert and Daisy The Musical.
We really enjoyed being in the Murder Mystery even though we hed ter mix with a load
of furriners. There wus people from Weasenham, Harpley and Rougham but we sharnt
hold that aginst em. Gert was murdered twice by the dodgy bloke from Harpley but the
audience seemed ter enjoy it.
Bert and Gert invited Daisy and Sid ter spent Christmas Day with them and they awl hed
a very noice toime. They dint get too drunk so there int no parties organised fer this year
but that is the Queens 90th birthday, so who knows? However.......
Happy 99th Birthday to Mrs Miriam Flower on Monday 1st February. May have to start
planning a party for next year!
We have had very sad news since last toime. We hev lost Carl Gostling (as reported in
last months Mallard) in November, Mary Hinds (a long term resident of Massingham
who moved in to a home in Swaffham), Sid Crisp from Harpley (Ians father, Sara from
the shops father-in-law) and Jim Boeckeler (the late Bobbys husband) in December.
Unfortunately 2016 started no better with the passing of dear Mr Derek Skipper who was
a true gentleman and will be sadly missed especially by the Sunday morning paper brigade and the Bowls Club. A few days later Miss Mary Birkbeck of Little Massingham
died in hospital. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all their familes.
Well, now is the toime to start dewing sum exercise ter work off the Christmas pudding
and mince pies. We expect ter see yew awl dewing a lot of walking about the village
we will be watching from our windas.
We see the film club is showing Suffragette in January. Daisy saw this with her granddaughter and hed to answer sum very difficult questions. If yew watch the film yew may
find owt what they were.
We would loike to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year.
Dew yew keep atroshing until next toime.

Mallard News
SAD FAREWELL TO POPULAR, MUCH-LOVED
LONG-TERM RESIDENT
It was with great sadness this month that we heard of the
death of Derek Edgar Skipper, aged 85years, and villagers
packed into Great Massinghams St. Marys on Thursday
21st January to pay their respects and thanks to this popular
resident. Derek will be sadly missed. He was a warm - hearted,
friendly person and a very active participant in Great Massingham over many years.
He was a local lad through and through having been born in
Castle Acre Road, Great Massingham in 1930 before his
family then moved to Jubilee Terrace in 1935. He was first
employed by Gagen Coal Merchants although, for most of his working life, he
worked for Hodgson Builders. From 1948 to 1950 he did his National Service (RASC).
He married Lena in August 1955 and they set up home in Rectory Row where Derek
modernised the cottage himself. They have three daughters - Avril and twins, Monica
and Maureen.
Derek was an accomplished sportsman for the village and played every sport and game
possible, both indoors and out. He was Great Massinghams lifelong bowling green
groundkeeper taking the task very seriously, tending the greens with great care. He kept
the bowling green immaculate for many years and it was a sad day when he decided to
step down from the role. In 2015, he was made an Honorary Member of the Bowls Club
in recognition of the valuable contribution he had made over the years both as player and
keeper.
An accomplished dancer, a devoted husband, father, grand father and great grand father,
a real gentleman he was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by us all.
Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Spring O
into Action
its only Lent again!
LL ARISHIONERS
We Brits like stability, dont we? We know where we are with Christmas
every year the same, December 25th. But as for Easter, well it moves around
all over the place. In the Church we call it a moveable feast. It makes for
huge complexity when planning ahead in business or education, for example. Easter is
really early this year; the start of Lent, Ash Wednesday, is on February 10 th, even before
Valentines Day. However, the Archbishops have now decided that Easter should come
into line with the Eastern Christian Church and, in the future, have the same date every
year. This will take 5-10 years to accomplish. So all we will have to contend with is the
clocks going back - and forward - as they will on 23rd March 2016 which this year just
happens to be Easter Sunday. Funny old world, isnt it?
Lent is the traditional time to give up something we enjoy (forgo chocolate?) and in doing so hope-fully become more appreciative of the pleasures of life when they are reinstated at Easter, forty days later. Or we can take something on a course of study perhaps? Lifelong learning has been described as the interaction between our experience
(good and bad) and our personal development. Lent Courses are a popular feature of this
season of the Church year and a great opportunity to dip ones toe into the water. This
year we are running the same course at each end of our benefice (group of churches) on
different evenings. We will be exploring together Not a Tame Lion by Hilary Brand, a
short course based on the writings of CS Lewis. Please see our website for further details
- or ask a member of the team.
We have now passed the first anniversary of our new benefice: the Gayton, Grimston,
Massingham and District Group of churches over ten different villages. Please check out
our exciting new website: www.ggmbenefice.uk We are fortunate in having several
groups that meet together regularly for prayer and Bible study. We hope to build on this
foundation over the coming months and offer other courses which could, if desired, lead
to confirmation. Please be in touch if this is of interest to you. I wish you a blessed and
rewarding Lent.
Reverend Judith.
PLEASE NOTE :
The Lent course at Massingham is kindly being hosted by Kim and Allan Frazer at
Cobwebs, Great Massingham on Mondays, starting on 15 th February at 7.30pm.

Do you have good listening skills, a sense of

humour, enjoy meeting people and helping
them to be as independent as possible?
West Norfolk Befriending works with socially
isolated older people living in West Norfolk.
Many of our clients are socially isolated due
to a long term physical or sensory disability
or because of their role as a carer.
We aim to reduce social isolation by matching isolated older people with a trained and
DBS checked volunteer befriender, who will visit them on a regular basis.
We are especially looking for volunteer befrienders in Great Massingham.
The support a befriender gives will match the needs of the person supported. It may be
good conversation, the occasional trip out or helping participation in social activities.
Our volunteers are very valued members of our team. You will enjoy a full induction,
support, training, and professional work experience with a well respected local charity as
well as regular opportunities to meet other volunteers.
Befriending is an extremely rewarding experience, as our volunteers tell us; I enjoy
chatting with the clients and seeing the difference it makes. I enjoy the funny conversations we have, we always have a giggle. To find out more please visit :
