13. Explain the principle of the method of electrolytic refining of metals. Give one example.
Ans.13
Electrolytic refining:
It is the process of refining impure metals by using electricity. In this process, anode is
made up of impure metal and cathode is made up of a strip of pure metal. A solution of a
soluble salt of the same metal is taken as the electrolyte.
When an electric current is passed, metal ions from the electrolyte are deposited at the
cathode as pure metal and the impure metal from the anode dissolves into the electrolyte in
the form of ions. The impurities present in the impure metal gets collected below the anode.
This is known as anode mud.

Example: Pure aluminium is obtained from aluminium ore by the electrolytic refining
method

21. What are emulsions? What e their different types? Give one example of each type.
Ans.21
Emulsion: Emulsions are the colloidal solution in which both the dispersed phase and
dispersion medium are liquids.
There are two types of emulsions:

medium. For example- vanishing cream, milk, etc.

22. Give reasons for the following:

(i) (CH3)3 P = O exists but (CH3)3 N = O does not.
(ii) Oxygen has less electron gain enthalpy with negative sign than sulphur.
(iii) H3PO2 is a stronger reducing agent than H3PO3.
Ans.22
(i)

The d-orbitals are absent in nitrogen atom. This restricts nitrogen to expand its
coordination number beyond four. Hence, (CH 3)3N=O does not exist.

(ii)

Oxygen is the smallest element of group 16. Due to its small size, the incoming electron
is not accommodated with ease As a result; oxygen has less electron gain enthalpy than
sulphur.

(iii)

H3PO3 has one PH bond & H3PO2 has two P-H bonds. Thus, H3PO2 can release 2
hydrogen atoms while H3PO3 can release one hydrogen atom. Hence, H3PO2 is a
stronger reducing agent than H3P03.

Chloride is a weak field legend & carbonyl is a strong weak field legend. In [NiCl4] ,
the oxidation state of Ni is +2. Chloride does not pair up d-orbital electrons. Thus, the
two unpaired electrons present in the valence d-orbitals are responsible of paramagnetic
nature of the complex. On the other hand, carbonyl pair up the d-orbital electrons. As a
result no electrons are left unpaired and the complex becomes diamagnetic in nature.

(b) Which halogen compound in each of the following pairs will react faster in SN2 reaction?

(i) CH 3 Br or CH 3 I

(ii) CH 3 3 C - Cl or CH 3 - Cl
Ans.24
(a)

(b)
In the SN2 mechanism, the reactivity of halides for the same alkyl group increases in the
following order.
RF << RCl < RBr < RI
As size increases, the halide ion becomes a better leaving group. Thus, CH3I will react

faster than CH3Br in SN2 reactions with OH .

In case of (CH3)3CCl, the attack of the nucleophile at the carbon atom is hindered because
of the presence of bulky substituents on that carbon atom. In case of, there are no bulky
substituents on the carbon in CH3Cl. Hence, CH3Cl reacts faster than (CH3)3CCl in SN2
reaction with OH.

25. Account for the following:

(i) Primary amines (R-NH2) have higher boiling point than tertiary amines (R3N).
(ii) Aniline does not undergo Friedel- Crafts reactions:
(iii) (CH3)2NH is more basic than (CH3)3N in an aqueous solution.
Ans.25
(i) In primary amines, two hydrogen atoms are present whereas in tertiary amine, there are no
Hatoms. Due to the presence of Hatoms, primary amines undergo intermolecular
Hbonding.

(ii) As a result, extra energy is required to break the hydrogen bonds of primary amines. Thus,
primary amines have higher boiling points than tertiary amines.
(i) AlCl3 is acidic in nature & aniline is a strong base. Hence, aniline reacts with AlCl3 to form
a salt.

(ii) But it does not undergo the Friedel-Crafts reaction. It happens because of the positive
charge on the N-atom. This leads to deactivation of electrophilic substitution in the benzene
ring takes place.
(i)

Basic strength in aqueous solution depends on 2 factors:

Steric factor- alkyl group is larger than hydrogen atom which causes steric
hindrances. As the number of alkyl group increases, the steric hindrances
increase in the same direction.

Amines form H-bonds with water molecules & release hydration energy &
forms protonated amines. Protonated amines are more stable. Greater the
hydration enthalpy more is the stability of protonated amine. Thus greater is the
tendency of the amine to form cation leading to greater base strength of the
amine.

Hence, the order of the basic strength in aqueous phase is:

Secondary > Tertiary > Primary

Primary structure:
It is a specific sequence of linkages between amino acids in a polypeptide chain. Different
sequences are present in different proteins. Any change in the sequence creates a different
protein.

(iii)Denaturation:
Protein has is a unique 3-dimensional structure and a unique biological activity. In such
condition, it is active & takes part in reactions, & is known as native protein. However,
when the native protein is subjected to physical changes such as change in temperature or
chemical changes such as its H-bonds are disturbed, change in pH. These activities disturb
the structure of protein. As a result, unfolding of the globules takes place which uncoils the
helix. In this form, the protein loses its biological activity. This loss of biological activity
by the protein is known as denaturation.
Denaturation destroys the secondary and the tertiary structures of the protein, but it does
not alter the primary structure.
For example: Coagulation of egg white when an egg is boiled
