From the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell to the new iPhone operating system,
technology has improved significantly and rapidly. Technology that used to require a whole room can
now fit into your pocket, and the same pieces that cost a lot to make are now much more cost-effective.
The evolution of technology has allowed systems to be ran more efficiently and safely. Electronic or
computer based systems now basically run plants, mills, and warehouses, and have made overseeing the
plants operations much easier and have helped to predict and prevent major disasters. Since the
electronic system has become so prominent, this research topic has a plethora of information to review
and analyze.
Before the introduction of electrical and computer systems, everything was done manually. This took a lot
of time and wasnt as efficient as the systems we now have in place. In a plant, if you wanted to know
what the pressure was at a certain place in the pipe, you had to go to that section and take the
measurement. Now, we have electronic pressure gauges that send the pressure readings into a Distributed
Control System (DCS), and pressure readings can be taken instantaneously. Also before, the only way to
know the pressure was too high was to check that section to see. Now it is fed to the DCS and some
systems will automatically shut down that part of the system in order for a disaster to be avoided. The
evolution of these systems has greatly benefitted everyone who uses them, and they have come along way
from the beginning.
In general, this topic research is chosen because of the extensive usage of technology in this present
generation. Technology in regard to electronic and computer based system plays a significant role in
many areas especially for safety management in various industries. Many different companies are using
electronic based system to secure their data and usually the systems that are being used by the companies
are designed to fit and to properly secure their information. Therefore, the implementation of electronic
and computer based systems are designed to improve safety and to facilitate processes in order to enhance
the safety management of a company.
An electronic and a computer based system is a system in which its main function depends either wholly
or partially on computer software. It is important to implement this electronic and computer based safety
design in order to assess risks and process data otherwise impossible. Even though, an electronic and a
computer based system may cause the wider system to behave in an unsafe way, it can actually do more
good than bad if well-maintained. There are several ways as to how safety management can depend
electronically. Computers can help to control the wider system of the organization. For example, a control
system may use computers to control process plant directly from a safe distance. This system gives more
control to the functions that are important to safety. Not only that, the electronic and computer based

safety system can be used to help to protect against harm if the wider system is under vulnerability. For
instance, a computerized automated shutdown during emergency situations are taken seriously in many
chemical plants to avoid further consequence that may lead to further loss and deaths.
Electronic and computer based systems have unique characteristics that can be distinguished from
physical systems. One of the examples of this unique characteristic is electronic and computer based
safety systems rely on software and associated data for most parts. With this regard, it can be said to be
significantly important for safety because software can close the human error gap. It is not possible to see
errors with a software if not by examination and analysis of data coding. Since software is typically
complicated, the relationship between the input and output data can be difficult to predict and is
exceptional if it is done with a detailed and particular analysis of coding. Therefore, a computer must be
regarded and treated as an integration of the wider system to enhance the functionality and safety of the
whole system.
The scope and purpose of this research is to study how electronic and computer based safety system is
being managed by different companies and relate the differences between them. Not only that, the
objective of the current study is to provide a comprehensive literature review of the industry practices in
relation to this computer safety management.

Technology is used in almost every safety related process in industries. Especially today, safety
management systems and control process systems depend on technology. In this paper, there will be three
main issues to be looked and analyzed. Firstly, the implementation of the different control safety system
used in different industries. Secondly, the reliability of the different control safety systems presents today,
comparing the different control safety systems. Thirdly, the Cyber security measures taken by the
companies to protect information about their processes from outside threads.
Implementation of the different safety system present today is a broad area to look at, this is the reason
why we are going to focus in three main safety systems used today by industries. Alarm system as a
safety indicator and the operator response is the first system to be discussed. The pros and cons of this
system are going to be discussed. In addition, the second control safety system are three different
configuration software systems used mainly by the oil and gas industries, as well as nuclear industries.
Distributed Control system (DCS), Safety Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and SCADA systems
will be compared, in terms of efficiency, safety alert accuracy. There are still some issues about what
system is the most accurate and reliable when a common platform approach is chosen for safety and
control.
Each industry chooses a desired control safety system. Reliability of these systems vary depending on the
industry and the use that they give to them. In this paper, a reliability comparison between the different
systems mentioned above will be provided. Which system is more reliable to achieve a control safety
system specifically in the oil and gas industry.
Cyber security, the new concern of power stations, factories and other infrastructural facilities will be
addressed in this paper. In this section, industries measures to secure a hacker attack against their process
control system will be discussed. Probable consequences of a hacker attack will be mentioned and
prevention systems are also to be addressed. Financial loss, production or service disruption and
reputational damage are just few examples of how cyber security is just an important topic concerning
private information and process control system inside an industry.
Researching a topic such as Electronic Safety Systems requires a true understanding of their origin and
how they've developed. How safety systems are designed, used, implemented, and evolved, and how
technology is used to implement them in today's industries across the world. Using records and scholarly
journals, exploring how these systems have transformed themselves from a single user interface logging

system, to intelligent networks that aid and support industries in their goal of creating a safe job
environment is possible. With industry reviews and safety records, these systems can be compared and
ranked by their industry performance which allows us to isolate characteristics that make these systems so
useful, and those that make these systems catastrophic.
There are many types of systems including data sharing and management systems, emergency response
systems, and even site security software that show the broad scope of these programs throughout industry.
With this in mind we start our search with articles on these systems describing data acquisition, data
processing and decoding, mechanical controls, statistical analysis, and human interface to create a better
work environment. These systems strive to revolutionize the way processes are managed, coining terms
like ROF; refineries of the future. Through dissecting books, we have come to understand the perspective
of the creators of these systems, allowing us to identify key factors and expand upon them.
Give examples where appropriate and compare to related cases or related incidents where appropriate.
