3 people arrested in case involving tied up father, daughter

Off-duty detective
credited for his
quick thinking
By Jim Kasuba

An off-duty detective is
being credited with helping nab three people wanted
in connection with a Jan. 21
home invasion that involved
two residents being tied up
and having their valuables
stolen.
Police Chief Daniel Grant

Det. Sgt. Richard Weise

praised Detective Sgt. Richard Weise for spotting the
green 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier the suspects used to get

away.
According to Grant,
Weise was driving north on
I-75 Sunday afternoon when
he noticed the distinctive
car police had been looking
for. It was an unusual shade
of green and was missing a
hubcap on the rear drivers
side, just like the car a gas
station surveillance camera picked up after the suspects fled.
Some people tune out
when theyre off the clock,
but he had the image of that
car burned in his head,

Grant said. He looked up

and saw the guy who was
the spitting image of the
guy in the video. (Weise)
was getting close to Brownstown so he called Brownstown police and gave them
a description of the car.
They pulled it over and two
people were arrested.
Grant said the driver
was a 28-year-old Carleton
man and his passenger is
a 23-year-old woman from
Monroe.
Both people are believed
to have been in the Cavalier

at a gas station near where

the crime took place, in the
1600 block of 16th Street.
An 80-year-old man and
his 56-year-old daughter,
who has a learning disability, reported being tied up
and robbed by an intruder
who took cash and jewelry.
Police were told the robber then held a knife to the
back of the female victim, as
they walked to the nearby
gas station on Ford Avenue,
where the man got into the
car and took off. While the
Monroe woman was not

seen in the video, Grant

said police believe she was
the passenger, as the thief
jumped into the back seat,
holding an orange backpack
believed to contain items he
had just stolen.
Grant said the pair cooperated with police, telling
detectives where the stolen
jewelry was pawned. They
also gave police the name
of the man believed to have
committed the crime.

Its official.
Supporters of a group of
six students at Wilson Middle School propelled them
to the top of a contest that
relied on public votes, handing them the Fan Favorite
Award in a national app design contest.
The contest deadline was
Jan. 31.
Verizon is awarding students $20,000 for their
school and a chance to build
their concept into a work-

ing app with Massachusetts Institute of Technology experts. The students

will learn coding and have
their concept turned into a
real, working mobile app.
Last month, the team of
sixth- and seventh-graders were awarded Best in
State for their submission
of an app concept they call
POP, which stands for Protect Our Parks.
Members of the top middle school team in Michigan
are Alec Brovont, Ashton
Donaldson, Finn Gomez,
Reilly Gomez, McKenzie

on Allen Rd. at West Rd.

Their teacher mentors
are Jenna Purdu and Greg
Brovont.
In a video they put together explaining how the

app would work, the students showed instances of

graffiti and broken equipment at a Wyandotte park.
Those who have their app
on their phone could take

a photo of the problem and

send it to a citys recreation
department, park authority
or mayors office.
The app will promote
safe and clean parks by en-

abling community members to directly and immediately alert officials when

there is damage or litter in
a local park.

By Dave Herndon

Through the use of a

$250,000 federal Community Development Block
Grant, residents of Southgate soon will see some relief from basement flooding, according to Mayor Joseph Kuspa.

For more than 20 years,

residents serviced by the

Sewer District have had
stormwater backflow issues.
One of the largest and
most recent incidents was
in August 2014, when similar issues happened all over
the state.

Soon after the 2014 flood

event, I directed Hennessey
Engineering, our city engineers, to look for a realistic and practical solution to
minimize and, if possible,
eliminate the future flooding of residential basements
in the affected neighborhoods, Kuspa said during
his recent State of the City
