Bone density scanning, also known as bone

densitometry or dual energy x-ray absorptiometry
(DEXA), is a scan that assesses for the presence of
osteoporosis, which is a condition in which bones
become porous and weakened. Osteoporosis
leads to a higher risk of fragility fractures. Bone
Mineral Density is measured at both the spine
and hip since bone mineralisation is not uniform
throughout your body. While some skeletal sites
may be normal, others may be osteoporotic and
prone to fractures. BMD at Imaging Central Morley
utilises MedixDR Whole Body DEXA System.

The scan is fast and painless.

When measuring the bone density in the hip and
spine, patients will change into a gown and lie on
a padded table which forms part of the DEXA unit.
An x-ray generator is located beneath the patient
and an imaging device is positioned above.
The Imaging Central DEXA unit is very fast and a
scan of the hip can take less than 60 seconds.

How Should I prepare?

DEXA bone density scans require no special
preparation and patients can eat and drink
normally.

How

What is a DEXA Bone Mineral Density Scan?

No appointment is required for a BMD scan at

Imaging Central Morley.

A detailed report of your BMD assessment is sent

directly to your referring doctor. Please ensure
that you make a follow-up appointment with your
referring doctor to discuss your results.
Results

Woman should always inform us if there is any

possibility that they are pregnant. The Imaging
Central Morley DEXA modality provides a minimal
radiation dose similar to normal background
radiation.
If you have concerns about the scan, please
discuss these with your referring doctor.

Your test results will be in the form of two scores:

T-Score - The T-score is used to estimate your
risk of developing a fracture.
Z-Score - The Z-score reflects the amount of bone
you have compared to people of the same age,
size and gender.
