and the Montcalm County Ani-
mal Department are excited to
announce their cooperation in
working together to promote an-
imal adoptions. County Animal
Control staff will be working with
D.J. Freeman, director of Grand
River Rover Rescue, and owner
of Lakeside Kennels, to organize
and run an adoption event at the
upcoming West Michigan Pet
Expo in Grand Rapids. “This is a
great opportunity for Montcalm
County Animal Control to show
that they care about the welfare
of these animals,” said Freeman.
“What better way to help move
dogs out of the shelter! Some-
times, you have to take the dogs
to the people instead of waiting
for the people to come to the
dogs.”
Montcalm County Animal
Control staff and volunteers will
prepare the animals for adoption
by administering vaccinations
and working with Spay-Neuter
Express. Susan Farrell, owner of
Pawformance Grooming Salon,
has offered to groom the dogs in
preparation for the event.
“This is just the type of col-
laboration we want to see more
of,” said Frances Schuleit, Chair-
woman of the Montcalm County
Animal Control Advisory Com-
mittee. “We are working very
hard to improve and maintain a
high level of customer service.”

Historic lakeside restaurant is under new ownership

of fine dining at Clifford Lake Inn
STANTON – A historic landmark and fine din-
ing restaurant will continue under the ownership
of a couple who have dedicated their lives to the
community in which they live and work.
Connie and Larry McKeown, of Sheridan, pur-
chased Clifford Lake Inn from Steve and Dyanne
Eipper on March 30. The McKeowns will continue
to operate the elegant yet casual lakeside dining
establishment that has served the area for nearly
130 years. They plan to continue the Inn’s fam-
ily-friendly atmosphere while incorporating a few
special touches of their own.
“Our goal is to provide comfortable, casual
lakeside dining with great service in a fun atmo-
sphere,” the McKeowns said. “We are exploring
menu options with a focus on seasonal foods and
great specials, in addition to a variety of popular
menu choices. Eventually, we would love to be
able to work with area producers to offer locally-
grown foods.”

Eisenhower Dance Ensemble
to perform on April 17
Eisenhower Dance Ensemble (EDE), Michigan’s pre-
mier contemporary dance company, will perform “Motown
in Motion”. Audience members will experience the best of
contemporary dance in a tribute to the music of Motown.
This visual salute to the tunes that rocked the Motor City
and made Motown Records famous includes dance vignettes
performed by EDE to recordings from top Motown artists,
such as the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Mar-
tha and the Vendellas, and the Supremes, among others.
Playful and humorous, “Motown in Motion” is designed
to appeal to a diverse audience of all ages, Motown fans and
dance aficionados alike. It gives an entertaining as well as
historical look at Motown, a distinctly American artistic and
cultural legacy.
The Eisenhower Dance Ensemble dancers will be con-
ducting workshops and master classes for area dancers.
Dancers from the Louanne Courtright Dance Studio have
been invited to perform with EDE in the dance “I Heard it
Through the Grapevine”.
Also on the program will be various selections from
EDE’s awe-inspiring repertory. A professional contempo-
rary dance company, EDE is known for its versatile and vir-
tuosic dancers, as well as its entertaining and athletic chore-
ography. Since it’s founding in 1991, EDE has achieved the
distinction of being Michigan’s premiere professional dance
ensemble. The Company maintains an active touring sched-
ule, which has taken it as far as St. Petersburg, Russia, as
well as throughout the United States.
This performance is funded in part by the Michigan Hu-
manities Council.

competition emphasizes that they are prepared
for a wide variety of business situations.”
Janis Hoople, MCC instructor and co-ad-
visor of the club, said the competition helps
prepare students for professional careers.
“Through their participation in this con-
test, our students are introduced to individual
and group leadership competencies and how
to relate them to real-life situations,” Hoople
said. “This helps them develop and improve
leadership skills that will be used in the work-

move forward with
integration process
The Spectrum Health Board of Directors and
Gerber Memorial Health Services (GMHS) mem-
bers have each approved resolutions that would
integrate GMHS into the Spectrum Health sys-
tem. Based on the resolutions, GMHS will be-
come a Spectrum Health hospital, effective May
1, 2010 pending execution of final legal docu-
ments.

Doyle, Westerbink take vows April is Alcohol

Awareness Month
LANSING — The Michigan Liquor Control
Commission (MLCC) is encouraging all lo-
cal communities to recognize April as Alcohol
Awareness Month to focus on the devastating
consequences of underage drinking in their
communities.
Alcohol Awareness month is intended to
educate people and communities about the
consequences of alcohol-related problems.
There are over 18 million individuals or 8.5
percent of Americans who suffer from alcohol-
use disorders. In addition, there are millions of
individuals who experience the devastating ef-
fects of the alcohol problem of someone in their
life. In fact, 25 percent of U.S. children are ex-
posed to alcohol-use disorders in their family.
“During Alcohol Awareness Month we
want to draw attention to the dangers related
to alcohol abuse and underage drinking and
connect our youth with resources that can help
them,” said Nida Samona, chairperson of the
Michigan Liquor Control Commission. “We
are making young people aware that underage
drinking can have devastating consequences
on themselves, the people they love, as well as
on others.”
Statistics show that every year over 6,500
people under the age of 21 die from alcohol-
related injuries involving underage drinking
and thousands more are injured. Almost 2,400
youth under 21 die in drinking and driving
crashes; almost 2,400 die from other accidents,
falls, fires etc.; 1,500 die in alcohol-related ho-
micides and 300 due to suicide.

19 years. He began as an employ-
ee and eventually purchased the
business from the Bellows family
after the death of former owner
Mic Bellows. Mic’s daughter, Lynn
Girskis, still manages the office
for Larry. Connie has more than
20 years of experience in human
resources management, spend-
ing the last 10 years working in
executive management with the
umbrella of accounting, custom-
er service, human resources and
business development.
The couple has also been in-
volved with a variety of commu-
nity organizations and continues
to support many causes.
“Being involved in the com-
munity is very important to us
because we believe that is what
helps a community prosper for fu-
ture generations,” they said.
Connie has been a member of
the Central Montcalm Commu-
nity Foundation Board of Direc-
tors since 2000 and has served
as its president for the last three
years. She also served as a mem-
ber of the Central Montcalm
school board from 2004 through
2007. She currently serves as a
volunteer with the Central Mont-
calm Sports Boosters – an orga-
nization that Larry helped start in
2007 and currently serves as the
organization’s vice president. In
addition, Larry has volunteered
his time and talents with the Stan-
ton Little League, youth football,
youth soccer and basketball, and

to continuing the Inn’s standing
in the community.
“The restaurant will provide
another avenue for us to partner
with our community,” they said.
“We will have an outlet for com-
munity fund-raisers, student ac-
tivities on the lake and other ideas
that community members may
have.”
The Eippers are confident that
the McKeowns will continue a tra-
dition that has been such a special
part of their family.
“When my folks bought the
Inn, it was condemned. They re-
furbished everything. There was
a time when we all lived upstairs.
We came downstairs and that was
more or less our living room,”
Steve Eipper said. “We’re kind of
selling part of our soul.
“Larry and Connie are vested
in the community. I think they like
the Inn for what it means to the
community. It is more than just a
business. It’s a special place,” he
said. “The Inn has always been
a destination restaurant. People
drive here because it is special.
“My family dedicated a large
chunk of their lives to the Inn.
We’re just excited that it has
somebody that is going to take it
and be excited about it,” Eipper
said.
Clifford Lake Inn was built
in 1881 in the town of Richard’s
Point. A horse drawn bus line
transported passengers from
Stanton to Clifford Lake for a 5-
cent round-trip fare, and guests
came from all areas to enjoy the
charming atmosphere of the lake-

1930, during the first year of the
Great Depression, 80 percent of
the Inn was destroyed by fire. It
was rebuilt the next year.
In 1945, the Inn again had new
owners. Doc and Lillian Bruder
bought it, and after 10 years it
again was sold, this time to Ed and
Edie Welch in 1955. Throughout
the years various owners changed
the Inn’s personality – from an
Inn to a restaurant to a rock ’n’
roll bar. In 1975, it was in grave
disrepair and was condemned.
Norman and Dyanne Eipper,
at the time real estate brokers in
Lansing, vacationed in Stanton
and decided to make a career
change. In 1976, they bought Clif-
ford Lake Inn, the eight-bedroom
hotel next to their cabin on the
lake, and spent months sanding
floors, stripping furniture and
learning the restaurant and bar
business. They restored the Inn to
its historic elegance.
In 1986, the State of Michigan
designated Clifford Lake Inn as a
State of Michigan Historic Site.
The Eippers shared their pas-
sion for the business with their
son, Steve, a Michigan State Uni-
versity and Culinary Institute
graduate, when he joined the es-
tablishment in 1996.
“We appreciate the opportu-
nity to continue the traditions set
forth by the Eipper family and all
of those who owned the Inn be-
fore them,” the McKeowns said.
“We hope that people will come
from near and far – just like they

the national tournament. Ryan competed two full days with
25 wrestler’s who qualified, through all regions of the state
Ryan’s older brother, Jordan, also took a coveted place, tak-
ing 3rd in the 97/98 age bracket at 65 lbs.
The top three wrestlers in each age bracket and weight
class, were awarded a specially, designed, 2010 MYWA sin-
glet, which means more than the large medal to most young
wrestlers Ryan is experienced with the intensity and anticipa-
tion around this tournament, as he is a two time MYWA state
champion, as well as, top three in previous years. As well as,
Michigan’s Freestyle state champion in 2007.
Ryan has been the MYWA Western Region Champion for
a number of years.
Even though this wrestling season had some very special
moments and taking the state title was the icing, Ryan under-
stands that it’s not the amount of wins that determine suc-
cess, but how those losses are handled.
Ryan and Jordan’s family are very proud of them both for
working so hard all season, giving it their all, and believing in
themselves.
Ryan and Jordan are not continuing on to the National
tournament, as they plan to do some fishing, archery and
goofing off this spring, as well as, taking a very memorable
family vacation to Alaska for some more fishing.

The Tri County High School Jazz Band will be among twenty other
schools from across the state and regional professional jazz artists as
part of the Fifth Annual Thornapple Jazz Festival in Hastings on April
16.
This West Michigan town nestled between Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo,
Battle Creek, and Lansing becomes “Jazz Town USA” as the business
district opens its doors for two days of live jazz.
The school musicians who perform in the festival will be given the
opportunity to play for enthusiastic crowds as well as receive a clinic in
the jazz art form from real professionals who are also appearing at the
festival.
The Thornapple Festival is part of the national celebration of
jazz during the entire month of April, and is recognized as an official
jazz festival of the Smithsonian Institute as well as the International
Association of Jazz Educators. The festival is produced by the Thornapple
Arts Council and is made possible through generous support of Hastings
City Bank, MACCA, and the support of many local businesses in and
around Hastings.
In addition to student jazz groups, regional artists appearing
include, Third Coast Steel, Les Jazz Big Band, Cabtown Checkers, Ed
Englerth Quartet, Tom Alderson Quartet, Jim Cooper Trio, Grand River
Blue Cats, Minds Eye Quartet, and the Cool Moose Orchestra.

great writing, all you need to do
is visit the Sand Lake Library. Of
course, there are thousands and
thousands of books, but there’s
also something new… Sand Lake
Elementary students’ writing is
now on display at the Sand Lake
Library for all to enjoy.
Earlier this year, the Sand
Lake Library formed a writing
partnership with Sand Lake
Elementary that gives our young
writers an opportunity to display
and share their published pieces
with the community. The writing
is displayed in the Children’s
Section and ranges from reports
and essays to personal narratives and poems. Students have been
working hard on publishing pieces to share since the beginning of the
year and new pieces of writing are added as they become available.
So, if you’d like to see the early work of some of our “Authors of

The National Honor Society (NHS) Cancer Walk will take place
from 6 p.m. on Friday, April 30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday May 1. Many

Tri County’s yearbook, Viking Voyager, has been recognized for
excellence and featured in the 2010 Gotcha Covered Look Book, Volume
8. Published annually, Jostens’ Look Book is a collection of spreads from
outstanding yearbooks and their creative themes, cool covers, dazzling
designs, relevant coverage, storytelling copy and action-packed
photography. The Gotcha Covered Look Book features the extraordinary
work of yearbook staffs and advisers from around the world and is
a popular resource for yearbook advisers and staffs seeking creative
design and coverage ideas, trends, and inspiration.
The Viking Voyager’s custom cover and artwork was created by Gabe
Cooper. He was assisted in artwork by Justin Lapekes and Michelle
Ripley. Other contributing members to the book were: Sara Ransom,
Holly Hyzer, Brittany Decker, Cody “The Ad Man” Vanderhyde,
Mallory Mooney, Paige Fifield, Molly Davis, Hannah Hackbardt,
Nicole Adamczak, Tiffany Gilbert, Brianna DeVries, Haley Boon, Jenny
Hackbardt, Kara Smith, and Katelyn Inman.
The 2008-09 Yearbook was under the direction of Kristine L.
Dollberg, Tri County High School’s yearbook adviser. Mrs. Dollberg has
been working as the advisor for twelve years.
“We were very excited to have the opportunity to produce Tri
County’s first ever all color yearbook. I had a really wonderful staff that
made it a great success,” commented Dollberg.
The Tri County’s Viking Voyager was one of only 518 yearbooks
selected from over 3,000 submitted to a panel of judges that included
nationally recognized scholastic journalism professionals and award-
winning yearbook advisers. Yearbooks are unique, limited edition books
created by students to capture stories and events for all the school’s
students. The Viking Voyager is a great example of the inclusive quality
of yearbooks and chronicles what is most relevant to this year’s school
community.
“Yearbook staffers exemplify the incredible design, photography,
and journalistic talents of today’s students and their ability to capture
once-in-a-lifetime stories that will be relished for generations,” said
Gary Lundgren, Jostens senior program manager/education. “The
yearbooks chosen for Jostens’ 2010 Gotcha Covered Look Book reflect
the sophistication and relevance of yearbook programs and demonstrate
why yearbooks remain so popular among students as a means to capture
and share their school experiences and traditions.”
Kristine Dollberg and her yearbook staff received a copy of Jostens’
2010 Gotcha Covered Look Book and a certificate from Jostens to
recognize their outstanding achievement.
Stephanie (Lindley) Dood is student teaching in Mrs. Clegg’s special
education classroom at the middle school. She will be with Mrs. Clegg
for a total of sixteen weeks.
Stephanie is currently attending Central Michigan
University and will graduate in December of this year.
Her minor is in language arts and she is majoring in
special education. In the fall she will student teach
in the Grant Public Schools.
Stephanie said her parents are both educators
and her decision to become a teacher was because
of their influence and the influence of her sixth
grade teacher. “Mr. Hummel was also my basketball
coach and everything was hands-on. He set up an
active learning environment.”
When Stephanie isn’t student teaching or studying, she e n j o y s
spending time with her husband. Recently she partnered with her
mother and sister in making glass beaded jewelry.
