A Daily Lesson Plan: Inductive Concept Lesson
Topic/Title: Science
Recommended Grade Level: Grade 1
Unit Theme: Living and Non Living Organisms
Objective(s)
The students will identify and categorize living and non living things in the environment.
They will be able to identify characteristics of living organisms and how it allows their basic
needs to be met.
Related TEKS:
112.3. Science, Grade 1.
(8) Science concepts. The student distinguishes between living organisms and nonliving
objects. The student is expected to:
(A) group living organisms and nonliving objects;
(B) compare living organisms and nonliving objects.
(9) Science concepts. The student knows that living organisms have basic needs. The
student is expected to:
(A) identify characteristics of living organisms that allow their basic needs to be
met;

Instructional Materials

Pencils
1 plastic bag with pictures of living and non living organisms per group.
1 worksheet per person with living organism/ non living organism section.
Crayons

Anticipatory Set
I will begin my lesson by comparing a rock and a leaf. I will ask my students which
object they think is living and non living.
We will begin by discussing what living and non living organisms are and what
characteristics living objects portray in order to meet their needs. I will give a brief definition of
living and non living organism. (Living- something that is alive, breathing, reproduces, grows
and eats.) (Non-living- something that is not alive, cannot reproduce, and grow.)

Procedure
1. The students will be divided into groups of 3 and every student from each group will take
1 worksheet to write on and have 1 plastic baggy with pictures of the living and non
living objects. Examples of objects in each bag are:
Living organisms: log, plant, dog, insects, apple, tree, and snail.
Non Living Organisms: rock, car, computer, clouds, clock, book, and hat.
2. Each picture will either have a living or non living object on them.
3. The groups will take all the pictures out and sort through them.
4. The students will work together to decide which objects go in the living/non living
category.
5. As they decide they will draw and write the name of the object in its proper category.
6. As they are doing so I will walk throughout the room and monitor the group work as well
as answer any questions they have about the characteristics of each object. If a student
does not understand the difference I will use prompting and cues to encourage them to
think it through. I will explain that a living organisms eats, breathes, reproduces and is
alive.
7. Once the group has come to a decision in where each object should be placed they will
give at least 1 characteristic for the living organisms.
8. Once they have finished categorizing and writing the characteristics they will color there
pictures.
Summary and Assessment

I will ask my students to tell me how they can tell whether something is living
or non living? (Living things eat, reproduce, breathe and grow)
We will discuss as a class what items they categorized under the living and
non living sections and see if we came up with the same results.
I will give my students a worksheet that will consist of several living/non
living things and they will write which object belongs in the categories. This
worksheet will be graded to see how well my students understood the
difference between living/non living things.

Closure
After the assessment I will ask my students to go home and write down as many living
and non living things they see indoor and outdoors, record them and bring it to class the next day.
