Instructions

This is a Closed Book examination.

Begin the answer to each question on a new page.
Examination materials must not be removed from the examination room.
In all your answers indicate your reasoning and make clear (in words or by
using a diagram) the meaning of all symbols you introduce.
The mark given to your answer will depend on the quality of the reasoning
displayed and on indications of conceptual understanding.

Materials

1 Blue book.
Calculators are permitted only for the processing of numerical information. They
must not be capable of remote communication, they must not have been
programmed nor may they store additional information.

Possibly useful information is printed on Pages 2 and 3.You should

familiarise yourselves with the information contained in those pages before
attempting any questions.

SECTION A
Answer FIVE of the six questions from this Section, worth 50 marks in total.
If all six questions are answered, the best five answers will be taken into account.
1

Using spherical polar coordinates, calculate the force exerted on a test charge q by a charged
dish that has a spherical surface of radius of curvature R. The edge of the dish has radius a
R

a . The test charge is at the centre of curvature of the dish and the dish has a surface
2

charge density .

[10]

(a)

The Levi-Civita tensor ijk has one particular element 123 1 . Write down the rules
for the indices that are used to obtain the other elements.

(b)

Prove that V 0 for any scalar field V.

(c)

In terms of the work done in moving a test charge, show that the electric field of a
static charge distribution is a conservative field.
[10]

(a)

Find the potential V inside and outside a uniformly charged solid sphere with charge
density , total charge q and radius R. Use infinity as the reference point.

(b)

In terms of the dipole moments in a volume V, what does the polarisation of the
medium P mean?

(a)

Use the Dirac delta function to express the current density J of a filamentary current I
in a wire aligned along the x-axis.

(b)

Show that Ohms law V = IR may be expressed as J E .

(c)

Use .B 0 to show that at the boundary between two materials the component of the
magnetic field B that is perpendicular to the boundary is the same on both sides of the
boundary.
[10]

(a)

What is the magnetic flux passing through a circular loop of wire of radius 1 m lying
on the table, where the earths magnetic field is 0.06 mT in magnitude and pointing
into the earth at 45 to the horizontal.

(b)

Consider a square loop of wire carrying a current I. The loop has sides of length a. It is
placed in a uniform magnetic field B such that B makes an angle to a vector normal
to the plane in which the loop lies.
(i) What is the magnetic moment of the loop?
(ii) Calculate the torque exerted on the loop.
[10]

(a)

Derive the differential form of Amperes law from Bdl 0 I encl .

(b)

Explain why Amperes law B 0 J is inconsistent with conservation of charge,

as expressed through the continuity relation .J

, and how can Amperes law
t
be modified to remove this inconsistency?

SECTION B
Answer ONE of the two questions from this Section, worth 10 marks in total.
If both questions are answered, the best answer will be taken into account.
7

A wire carrying 2 A current is wound tightly around a straight iron rod (with r 10 4 ).
There are 1000 turns of wire per metre.
(a)

If the iron rod were protruding partly from the coil at one end, explain why there
would be a force pulling it into the coil.

(b)

Calculate the magnitudes of

(i) the magnetic field B, and
(ii) the magnetisation M in the iron.
(iii) the bound surface current density in the iron.
[10]

Consider the capacitor shown, with a dielectric layer of thickness d and dielectric constant
K = 2 between the plates. The plates each have the surface charge density = 2 108 cm2,
as indicated.

(a)

Derive from Gauss law a formula for the electric displacement D between the plates.

(b)

Find the electric field E between the plates.

(c)

Find the polarisation P in the dielectric.

(d)

Find the potential difference between the plates.
