Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. Distinguish animals under vertebrates from invertebrates;
B. Classify and describe different animals according to their class
under subphylum vertebra based on their characteristics and
C. Cite the importance of the evolution of animals from
invertebrates to vertebrates.
Subject Matter:
A. Topic: Vertebrates
B. References: You and the Natural World BIOLOGY by C. Capco and
G. Yang pages 441-449
C. Materials: Pictures, Realia, Cartolina , Manila paper
Procedure:
Teachers Activity
A. Motivation:
Are you excited for todays
activity?

Students Activity
Yes sir!

But before we proceed to our

topic today, I want to show
something.
What do you call this animal?
Who can describe this
earthworm?
Why is it that this earthworm
can easily bend its body and
can move in a peristalsis
form?

Earthworm sir.
It has a neutral color which is
brown. It has a soft body. It is just
like a thin wire sir.

It is because earthworm lacks

bones or the backbone sir.

What do you call the animals

that dont have backbones?

Invertebrate animals sir.

How about you how do you

consider yourself?

Vertebrate animal sir.

Why do you say so?

We are vertebrate sir because we

have backbone.

B. Presentation of the
Lesson:
So based on your answer,
who can now differentiate
vertebrate from invertebrate
animals?

Vertebrates are animals that have

backbones while invertebrates
are animals that dont have

backbones.

C. Lesson proper:
Today class we will put
emphasis to vertebrate
animals.
For you understand more
about our topic for today, I
had prepared you an activity.
This activity is called Picture
Perfect. I will group you into
7. What I want you to do is to
arrange the pieces of papers
assigned to your group until
you will come up with a
picture of an animal and
paste it in a manila paper.
Then describe the assigned
picture of animal on group
based its body features,
mode reproduction and life
cycle, locomotion and their
habitat and classify to where
class this animal belong. Put
your description in the pieces Yes sir!
of paper which I will
distribute afterwards. Do this
in 10 minutes and 5 minutes
to present your output. Are
all my instruction clear?

Work period. (10 minutes)

Group Presentation:
Now lets move to the
presentation of each group.
May I call the first group to
present their output.

(The first group will present their

output.)

They use their mouths to attach

on their host with their horny
tooth like parts that rasp flesh or

that jaw aids in eating, so
how do these animals obtain

their food?

Now lets move on to the

next group.

Why do sharks stay in the

deeper part of a sea?

Lets now welcome the third

group.
What makes bony fishes
control their buoyancy and
that they can remain in a
specific depth of sea water?
What is the function of swim
bladder in the system of
bony fishes?

(The second group will present

their output.)

They have cartilage skeleton tend

to be heavier than water thats
why they sink deep into the sea.

(The third group will present their

output.)

Swim bladder sir.

It is an air sac that is used to

control buoyancy and helps them
hold still at any depth and not
sink.

(The fourth group will present

their output.)

Lets now welcome the fourth Most amphibians can swim in

their larval stage (tadpole). They
have tail that allows them to

gills so that they can breathe
under water.

(The fifth group will present their

output.)
Lets now welcome the fifth
group.
It is believed reptiles arouse
from amphibians. Give one of
the reptiles adaptations
where they escape on the
dependency on standing

that distinguishes them from

water from their body.

(The sixth group will present their

output.)
Lets now welcome the sixth
group.
Why is it that birds are
believed that they
descended from dinosaurs?

Lets now welcome the last

group.
Why is it that some
mammals can live in
Antarctica but reptiles
cannot?

Birds have feathers which are

modified scales and are now
known that many kinds of
dinosaurs had feathers. They also
have scales on their feet.

It is because mammals are

endothermic, meaning they can
regulate their body temperature
and they have hair or fur which
aids in regulation of their body
temperature.

D. Generalization:
To sum up what we discussed
today, I have here a concept
map. What I want you to do
(the students fills in the concept
is to fill in this concept map
map)
with the main ideas you
learned today.

IV.

Application:
We just had talked about vertebrates. Relating to your personal life, who
might be the backbone to consider in your family. Explain your answer
and put it in a sheet of paper.

V.
VI.

Evaluation:
Assignment:
A. List down ways to address current issues concerning animals
particularly vertebrate animals.

B. Search and have an advance reading about biodiversity.
