1) (8 pts.) Convert the following:

a. 100 kN/m2 to lb/in2
b. 30 m/s to mi/h
c. 800 slugs to Mg
d. 20 lb/ft2 to N/m2
2) (4 pts.) When a rigid body of mass m

undergoes plane motion, its kinetic

energy (KE) is
!

= ! ! + ! ! !
where v is the velocity of its mass center, k
is a constant, and is the angular velocity
of the body in rad/s. Express the units of KE
and k in terms of the base units of
a. The SI system
b. The U.S. Customary system
3) (6 pts.) The mass moment of inertia I of
a homogeneous sphere about its
diameter is I = (2/5)mR2, where m and R
are its mass and radius, respectively.
Find the dimension of I in terms of the
base dimensions of
a. A gravitational [FLT] system.
b. An absolute [MLT] system.
4) (6 pts.) Determine the dimensions of
constants A and B in the following
equations, assuming each equation to be
dimensionally correct:
a. v3 = Ax2+Bvt2
2
b. x2 = At2eBt .
The dimensions of the variables are [x]
= [L], [v] = [L/T] and [a] = [L/T2].

5) (4

pts.)

The

universal gravitational

constant is G = 66.74 x10-12 m3/(kg.s2).

Express G in U.S. Customary units.
6) (6 pts.) The position of a particle is given
by s=2t2-8t+6 m, where t is in seconds.
Determine the time when the velocity of the
particle is zero and the total distance
traveled by the particle when t=3 s.
7) (6 pts.) A bead moves along a straight 60-in.
wire that lies along the x-axis. The position

of the bead is given by x = 2t2 10t in,

where x is measured from the center of
the wire, and t is the time in seconds.
Determine:
a. The time when the bead leaves the
wire
b. The distance traveled by the bead
from t = 0 until it leaves the wire.
8) (8 pts.) A projectile fired at O follows a
parabolic trajectory, given in parametric
form by x = 66t, y = 86t 4.91t2 where x
and y are measured in meters and t in
seconds. Determine:
a. The acceleration vector throughout
the flight
b. The velocity vector at O
c. The maximum height h
d. The range L

9) (6 pts.) A particle travels along a straight

line with an acceleration of a=(10-0.2s)
m/s2, where s is measured in meters.
Determine the velocity of the particle when
s=10 m if v=5 m/s at s=0.
10) (6 pts.) A particle moves along a straight
line such that its acceleration is a=(4t2-2)
m/s2, where t is in seconds. When t is equal
to zero, the particle is located 2 m to the left
of the origin, and when t=2 s, it is 20 m to
the left of the origin. Determine the position
of the particle when t=4 s.
11) (6 pts.) When a train is traveling along a
straight track at 2 m/s, it begins to
accelerate at a=60v-4 m/s2, where v is in m/s.
Determine its velocity and the position 3 s
after the acceleration.

12) (10 pts.) Tests reveal that a normal

driver takes about 0.75 s before he or

she can react to a situation to avoid a
collision. It takes about 3 s for a driver
having 0.1% alcohol in his/her system to
do the same. If such drivers are traveling
on a straight road at 30 mph (44 ft/s)
and their cars can decelerate at 2 ft/s2,
determine the shortest stopping distance
d for each from the moment they see the
pedestrians. Moral: If you must drink,
please don't drive!

13) (8 pts.) Car A starts from rest at t=0 s,

and travels along a straight road with a

constant acceleration of 6 ft/s2 until it
reaches a speed of 80 ft/s. Afterward it
maintains its speed. Also, when t = 0,
car B located 6000 ft down the road is
traveling towards A at a constant speed
of 60 ft/s. Determine the distance
traveled by car A when they pass each
other.
14) (4 pts.) If a particle has an initial
velocity of vA=12 ft/s to the right, at sA=
0, determine its position when t=10 s, if
a=2 ft/s2 to the left.
15) (4 pts.) A particle starts from rest and

travels along a straight line with an

acceleration a=(30-0.2v) ft/s2, where v is
in ft/s. Determine the time when the
velocity of the particle is v=30 ft/s.
16) (8 pts.) When cars A and B are next to one
another, they are traveling in the same
direction with speed vA and vB, respectively.
If B maintains its constant speed, while A
begins to decelerate at aA, determine the
distance d between the cars at the instant
car A stops.
