Engine de-throttling at part load through EIVC is an effective way to reduce pumping losses
(about 8 % reduction in bsfc at 2000 rpm 2 bar bmep).
Benefits are partly jeopardized for dual lift systems, which may increase significantly the
pressure drop during the intake phase, in comparison with VVA with normal lift pattern followed
by sudden closure.
However, the main drawback of EIVC is the turbulence dissipation, which slows down the
combustion process, worsening efficiency and causing COVimep increase.

However, the use of EIVC suffers from poor incylinder turbulence especially at low loads; the
dissipation of the kinetic energy of the intake air
mainly occurs from the EIVC to the BDC, because
the intake valves are closed and there is no energy
source available to supply the viscosity losses in
the trapped air charge.
At low loads the EIVC is further advanced towards
the TDC, because a lower amount of charge is
required, and this results in a higher turbulence
dissipation if compared with medium-high loads.
Several attempts can be made to address this
issue, in particular:
- By adopting EGR to reduce the advance of the
EIVC
- By enhancing tumble or swirl motion through a
suitable cylinder head design
- By adopting different valve lift patterns

Cylinder deactivation
Switching off a fraction (typically one half) of engine cylinders at part load is an effective way to increase load
(and therefore efficiency) of the active cylinders, thus significantly improving part load efficiency while
preserving full engine performance at WOT.
Technology dates back to the 80s for V8 engines
(Eaton & GM Displacement on Demand ), but is
now being re-introduced in mass production, also
in smaller engines (such as VW 1.4 4 cyl.) and in
combination with other technologies it should
theoretically compete with such as downsizing
and/or EIVC control on the in cylinder charge.
Another possible recent application is for some HEV architectures, where cylinder deactivation can be used
during coast down to minimize cylinder pumping losses and hence to enlarge the recuperation level.

The maximum load applicable in the 2cylinder mode is lower than the limit
suggested by the best BSFC trace.
Reason for that is that a certain torque
reserve is needed to temporarily cover the
additional losses during mode change.
The necessary torque reserve is only
obtainable up to certain engine loads which
therefore mark the upper limit of the 2cylinder mode.
This is particularly relevant when considering
that the turbo chargers boost pressure
cannot be used during transition because of
the system's high inertia.
It is furthermore advisable to provide
hysteresis when applying the cylinder
deactivation to avoid shifting back and forth
frequently.
